Department of Visual Communication Arts
Faculty of Communication Arts, Assumption University
In order to manage the Art thesis of the Visual Communication Arts Department
with efficiency, the following regulations have been formulated:
1. The Persons Concerned with the Art Thesis
1.1. The Committee
The committee of Art thesis is comprised of the Head of the Visual
Communication Arts Department as chairman and lecturers of the
Department as members. They are to advise and grade the project; to provide
regulations and directions. The secretaries of the committee are the lecturers
of GA 4602 Art thesis. They are to operate this course with efficiency.
1.2. The Advisor
The advisors are appointed by the committee. They are to advise their
advisees to select topics, research, design and make the reports. In case that
any students could not complete their project with efficiency, the advisor can
recommend them to withdraw from this course.
2. The Characteristics of the Project
Student can select a project from the following categories:
2.1. Business Related Project
2.1.1. New-Design Project
To design a visual communication project for a product or an
organization that does not have any prior design applications.
Students need to explain the importance of the design works for that
particular product or organization.
2.1.2. Redesign Project
To design a visual communication project for a product or an
organization, that already exists in the current design applications.
Students must analyze the problems or weaknesses of the original
design and show benefits of the new design.
2.2. Non-Commercial Project
To design a visual communication project that shows student’s ability to
command their design vernacular through the channel of their majors. This is
a research base project that requires students to gather data, build
information and analyze them accordingly, in order to show case their non-
commercial design engagement.

3. The Area of Study
Student can select one of the following study areas of Visual Communication
Arts in which they are interested and according to their major elective.

4. The Advisors
Student is entitled to select two advisors of the Art thesis from the following
lecturers of the Department. The selection should be based on the lecturer’s
expertise and their interests.

5. The Proposal Presentation
The process of proposal presentation is to submit the proposal document at Art
Office, 7 Flr. CA Bldg. before 9.00AM. of the due date (or one day before the
due date). Students have to standby in front of the meeting room while the
committee is considering the proposal. If there is any question, students must be
ready to enter the room to answer the question. Student who is late on submission
will not be considered. (Full-uniform required)
The approved topics and name of advisor will be announced within one week.
Students whose topics are not approved can resubmit new proposal on the
following Friday or as committee suggested. If it is not approved in the second
time, student will not be allowed to take this course.
5.1. The proposal file consists of:

5.1.1. Proposal
Student has to prepare sufficient copies of proposal as per number of
the committee. The contents must be clear and factual. The details and
format are as of the following format. (see Appendix A)
5.1.2. Portfolio
In order to demonstrates the design skill and qualifications of a
student. The portfolio comprises with the student’s works, made while
he or she has studied or worked. There should not be less than 12
pieces in the selected or similar study area. Student can present a
portfolio in 2 categories as follows:
5.1.2.1. Two or three-dimensional work. Student may take a photo or
print them and put with captions in a clear folder (A4 size)
5.1.2.2. Motion Graphics such as web design, multimedia, animation,
and video. A student has to submit it in the form of CD-Rom
or DVD.
5.1.3. Acceptance Letter
Students must contact the owner or an authority of the product or
organization to get their permission to use them as the case study for
Art thesis, and use their marketing data accordingly. Every data will
be used only for educational purpose and will be kept as confidential.
Students pick up the letter from Art office, CA Bldg., 7 Flr. and sent it
to the owner or the authority. They have to sign the letter and return to
the secretary with the proposal.

6. The Approval of the Topic
The Committee of Art thesis will consider and approve the topics by the end of
the first semester. The standards for this approval are as follows:
6.1. Study Area
Students must have the capability to operate and finish the projects. The
committee will consider this mainly from the portfolio and the internship
evaluation and report.
6.2. Case Study
A product or organization that is used as the case study must be fact and
significance. Any student of Assumption University or others could not have
used it for at lease 5 years. And the scope of study must be possible and
appropriate.
6.3. Academic Background
Student must obtain a cumulative GPA at least 2.0 and passed GA 4531
Design Seminar with a grade not lower than C or depending on the
consideration of committee
7. Characteristics of the Submitted Works (see Appendix B, C, D)
7.1. Sketch Design
The hand drawn and comprehensive sketch – to show the development of
design

Submitted works depend on the area of study, together with the
recommendation of the committee

Showing Marketing Research and Design Development. It must follow the
format of the Department.
7.4. Exhibition
Participating in the thesis exhibition is required for graduation. Failure to
participate the exhibition would result in an “I” until they can fulfill the
requirements. For those who do not cooperate with the exhibition
preparation would result in a penalty of 10 points deduction from the overall
score. The persons who could authorize the deductions are the Head of the
Visual Communication Arts Department, Secretary of the thesis committee
and the Head of the Thesis Exhibition.
8. The Presentation
8.1. Before the presentation, Students have to meet with their advisors on the
date suggested in the course outline or as the advisors’ suggestion.
8.2. Student must enroll in www.lms.au.edu
8.2.1. Website will be used to hand out class materials i.e. advisors list,
presentation list, etc. and to post grade
8.3. Students must have their multimedia presentation materials test in the
assigned room prior to the presentation schedule.
8.4. Student must dress in the full AU dress code as in the university regulations.
Failure to do so will be penalized by 5 points deduction from the final
presentation score.
8.5. Student must finish the presentation within 15 minutes for the first
presentation and within 10 minutes from the second presentation onward.
The committee has the right to stop any presentation deemed unnecessary or
inappropriate.
8.6. Students must collect presentation summary from the secretary of the
committee and combine them with their personal note to generate working

report. Students then will submit one copy to their advisor and then other
copies to the thesis committee for their next presentation.
Students must bring selected works from previous presentation to the
next presentation.
8.7. Student who is late presenting will be penalized by 25 points deduction from
their final score. And student will be the last person to present on that day.
8.8. Students who do not show up for their presentation on the assigned day will
get “zero” for that presentation. Students may appeal their grade if evidence
suggests reasonable excuse.
8.9. If the committee discovers any irregularities in student works, that person
will be recommended to withdraw or will receive "F" for the course.
9. The Examination of the Art Thesis
After the committee of the Art thesis approved a project and appointed an advisor
in the first semester, the department will set up 4 presentations in the second
semester. The requirements and guidelines depend on the each major
concentration.
10. Grading Criteria and Marks Allocation
10.1. Students will be recommended to withdraw when the average grading
from their presentation(s) is below 60%.
10.2. Failure to complete their body of works as suggested by the scope written
on student’s report or by committee suggestion will result in a “F” for that
particular presentation.
10.3. Student must dress in the full AU dress code as in the university
regulations. Failure to do so will be penalized by 5 points deduction from
the final presentation score.
10.4. Students who are late presenting will be deducted 25 point from 100 point
of each presentation. And will be the last student to present on that day.
10.5. Students who do not show up for their presentation on the assigned day
will get “zero” for that presentation. Students may appeal their grade if
evidence suggests reasonable excuse.
10.6. The committee has the right to stop any presentation deemed unnecessary
or inappropriate.
10.7. The committee may recommend students to withdraw if they consider
that the student can no longer perform on their project.
10.8. If the committee discovers any irregularities in student works, that person
will be recommended to withdraw or will receive "F" for the course.
10.9. Failure to submit the report on time would result in “zero” point for that
particular presentation.
10.10. Failure to participate the exhibition would result in “I” until students can
fulfill the requirements.
10.11. For those who do not cooperate with the exhibition preparation would
result in a penalty of 10 points deduction from the overall score. The
persons who could authorize the deductions are the Head of the Visual

Communication Arts Department, Secretary of the thesis committee and
the Head of the Thesis Exhibition.
10.12. The committee suggestion is the superlative level.
11. The Report
Rough Report
Student has to submit the rough copy of report to the advisor for proofing. The
advisor will return it to the student to revise before making the final report on the
day as stated in the course outline.
Final Report
The Final Report is including 2 copies of books with CD-ROM on the back
cover.

A summary page that showing a short description of study objectives,

This page is for thanking the organizations or the persons who gave a
hand in the project. Mostly these are the people who provided
information and advice. Their names and surnames should be
specified correctly.
11.2.6. Table of contents
List of each part from the preface to the last chapter with page number
(the pages are not specified for a bibliography and an appendix)

According to the Department's regulations, prior to graduation, students are
required to exhibit their works in public. Failure to participate the exhibition

concepts. Each set consists of 50% of body of works suggested from the
scope in students’ paper. Students who have not completed the required
body of works will not be evaluated and will be recommended to withdraw
from the course.

Students will submit 3 different art direction sketches from the selected
concept in 1st Presentation. Each sketch has to have all pieces of artwork as
stated in the scope, or as suggested by the committee. Any three dimensional
design work will be presented in a scaled mock up.
Students who have not completed the required body of works will not be
evaluated and will be recommended to withdraw from the course.

Appendix C : Presentation Guidelines – Computer Graphics (revised 11.3.09 – by

1. General Information
1.1. These guidelines apply to all GA 4602 Art Thesis, and GA 4531 Design
Seminar students.
1.2. The guideline are meant to clarify thesis related issues, and should be read in
conjunction with the latest version of the library Guides, available at the
central Library.
1.3. Questions concerning organization to formatting of material should be
discussed with the librarian in the information/ Reference department before
final typing.
1.4. Question concerning content and lab access should be discussed with your
thesis advisor and / or the chairman of the Visual communication
Department or Head of the Computer Graphics major concentration at the
beginning of your thesis project.
2. Presentation Guideline – 1st Presentation
2.1. Background of the project and marketing information / personal research of
the individual project.
2.2. Rough sketch and supporting visual references (2 concepts)

3.1. Extended the chosen idea from the first presentation and create 2 more
executions from that idea.

elements that will be used in the project must be shown to the

3.4.1. The animatic that was shown in 1st presentation must be re-edited and
replace with 3d characters and set that was done during the modeling
progress.

least 5 fully rendered images with light setting to committee.
4.2.2. The animatic that shown in 2nd presentation must be re-edited and
replace with 3d image that done during the modeling progress.
4.2.3. Some part of the animation should be in motion.
4.3. Web Design and interactive media project.
4.3.1. 50 % of the website and interactive media project should be active.
5. Presentation Guideline – 4th
Presentation
5.1. 100% of the entire project must be present in the professional way.
5.2. All movies must be present in DVD format.
5.3. Interactive media must be present in CD format.
5.4. Web design must present on-line and it should be on-line at least 60 days
after the final presentation.
6. Presentation Format
6.1. The thesis project can be presented in variety of ways depending on its
nature:
6.1.1. Animation, movie, motion graphics projects must be delivered on
PAL- compatible DVD. In each disk must have 2 loops of the movies.
Thesis student must provide the raw or high resolution of the clip in
another disk, in addition to create a show reel for the exhibition.
6.1.2. Website and Interactive media must be delivered on a CD-ROM. The
works in CD should be playable in any platform.
6.2. Storyboard on 1st presentation must be on A4 format.
6.3. Storyboard on 2nd
presentation must be on pitching board format.
6.4. The presentation of website and interactive must be shown with website
structure or flow chart.

Introduction
1. Background and Significance California Fitness Center has firmly established itself as the Asian fitness
industry. California Fitness Center was first established in Hong Kong with the
opening in Lai Kwai Fong Central, in July 1996. This club was such a tremendous
success that sites for additional facilities throughout Asia were planned. Currently
California Center has 5 locations in Hong Kong (now in Mongol), 2 in Singapore, 3
in Taipai, Taiwan, 2 in Korea, and 1 in Bangkok, Thailand. An aggressive expansion
is intended for all existing and new markets.
California Fitness Center introduces to the world a first class, five star fitness
experiences. The clubs are designed to reflect the future of fitness with creation of a
spacious, extremely, clean and well-managed environment. All of the cardiovascular
and strength training equipment is state-of-the-art and thoroughly tested by fitness
professionals for durability and ease of use. Over 100 of the hottest group exercise
classes are offered weekly in each facility by the best internationally certified
instructor. Personal trainers and fitness Counselors must complete a full
comprehensive fitness course to better educate them on goals and philosophies.
The California Fitness Center Goal as Bigger, Better, and Stronger provider
of fitness services and products around the world. California Fitness Center works to
enhance people’s lives through Fitness. As it continues to grow and expand into
other countries, the reputation of exception service and operation will always be
