Dear Carlson Parents, I wanted to take this opportunity to clarify the new Extra Curricular Activity Fee
that will now be assessed for all activities (field trips and clubs) where tax credit
funds are utilized. There has been much talk about the new “activity fee” schedule
that the district has been required to adopt as a result of the direction from the
State Attorney General. Essentially, this ruling requires that CUSD must assess a
fee for participation in all extracurricular activities where Tax Credit Funds are
used. For Carlson Elementary, this is predominantly field trips and after school
clubs. Therefore, grade levels will be sending out letters prior to any field trip expe-
rience and in the letter will be directions for how you may pay the assessed fee.
With respect to afterschool clubs, there will be a fee assessed as well which will
typically cover the cost of the t-shirt and/or any celebrations where tax credit
funds may be used. While we have not determined the amount as of yet, as letters
are sent home about the club offerings, a set fee amount will be detailed with direc-
tions to parents as to how they can pay the assessed fee.
Many, if not all, of our parents contribute Tax Credit Funds annually in the
amount of $200 and/or $400. These donations can be used to cover the fees
mentioned above and also provide you with a tax credit benefit at the end of
the year. Because the cost of field trips and after school opportunities can
often exceed the fee assessed, we strongly encourage families to continue to
donate through the tax credit funds to cover any fees as well as provide suffi-
cient funding to allow field trips and afterschool clubs to continue. As teach-
ers begin to schedule trips and clubs, a letter will be sent out which will provide
additional sense to this process. Parents have options as to how they would like to
pay the fee including a straight donation of the fee assessed or tax credit
(remember that the minimum tax credit donation that can be made is $25.00).
Should the assessed fee be a financial hardship there is a form and process to have
the fee waived by making contact with the school principal. Parents who may have
made their tax credit donation for 2014 at the start of the fiscal year, may elect to
have their existing donation cover fees that are assessed - should the donation be
sufficient. Please note that the fee assessed is per student per activity so multiple
field trips will each have a fee established as well as participation in any after-
school clubs where tax credit funds may be applied. As always, should you have
any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office at 480-224-3800.

Parents, staff members and community members are invited to attend the first Site Council meeting of the year scheduled for Thursday September 25th at 6:00 PM in the Media Cen-ter. Please call Marianne at 480-224-3807 for questions or to request an item be added to the agenda. The Site Council plays an important role in determining how undesignated tax credit funds are directed. Tax credit dona-tions may be designated to benefit class field trips, or extra-curricular club fees such as for FLL Robotics, Yearbook, Battle of the Books, Choir and Student Council clubs.
