working mission interpreters, Grace Jorgensen and Bonnie Jones, have called Messiah to join our ELCA brothers and sisters across the nation on Sunday, September 8, in a day of service in honor of this anniversary. Look for more in-formation in this newsletter, be sure to purchase a shirt, and get involved! God’s Work. Our Hands. We dig a garden. We build a home. We go the laundromat with the PADS laundry. We pre-pare the altar. We pray. Our youth play Bingo in a nursing home. Home Communion is given. We create and hang a ban-ner. We collect food. We learn a little Spanish to help someone feel at home. We share the peace. We raise money to prevent malaria. Ours hands and our daily work matter, and this causes me to wonder: When our congregation looks back at this time in history, the time around the twenty-fifth anniversary of the ELCA, what will we remember? Maybe we will remember things like “Living Face to Face” – our vision, or “Setting the Table” – our food collection ef-fort, or our new social justice ministry, or our beautiful worship, or “Don’t Cook with Candy,” or those Christian friends that didn’t leave our bedside. And as we remember these things, and each part of history, may we also remember that it was our gracious and mer-ciful God who gave us mentors, encouragers, our callings, and our daily work, and may we remember that it was this same God who gave us the body of Christ, the communion of saints, and the church of Jesus Christ on earth, including the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, for the sake of the world. Happy Anniversary ELCA. May God bless and keep us. Love and Blessings!

Pastor Dawn

(Continued from page 1)

"Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church is a community of Christians seeking to welcome and connect everyone, make disciples of everyone, and share Jesus' love everywhere. You're welcome here if you're single, married, widowed or divorced; gay or straight; male or female. You are welcome here if you have more bills than you can handle, and welcome if you have more money than you know what to do with. You're welcome here wherever you went to school, whatever you learned (or didn't learn), whatever language you speak, wherever you're from, and however you get around. You're welcome here if you grew up Lutheran or if you don't know what a Lutheran is. People who have mixed feel-ings about religion are very welcome here, as are people who have no idea why anyone would go to church, who are here to make their relatives happy, or who turned onto the wrong "Old Rand Road" from Highway 12. You're wel-come here if you never touch a drop, if you're in recovery, or if you're not quite there yet. You're welcome if you can't stand your parents or if you text them five times every day, and you're especially welcome if you do both. You're welcome here if you're angry, cheerful, confused, doubting, hurt, happy, listless, lost, wistful, yearning; right-wing, left-wing, or not into politics. You're welcome here if all you really need is to be around people. You're welcome here even if you root for the wrong sports team, are in the wrong mood, or you just want to sing. You are welcome here because God welcomes you."

Welcome

We are gearing up for the fall and are getting ready for Rally Sunday. Sunday school will start September 8 at 9am and we look forward to seeing everyone again and hearing about your fun summer activities. On Rally Sunday, we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the ELCA and we will have a celebration along with the entire congregation. The theme for the ELCA is God’s Work. Our Hands. This will be a day of service. In conjunction with the ELCA lunch and fellowship from 11:30 – 12:30, we will have fun activities and treats for the kids to celebrate the kick off of Sun-day school. In class the children will be writing letters and making pictures for the Military, that serve over seas, and for the local police and fire departments. Also on Rally Sunday, we will be collecting items for our Good Samaritan Ministry. Please bring in small toys, school supplies, and hygiene items. (Please see the list below). Good Samaritan will be using these items this fall for the Christmas Shoe Boxes. All items must be small enough to fit in a shoe box. We are in need of shepherd and center teachers for Sunday school this year. Cen-ter teachers and shepherds can teach or lead for a single rotation (4-6 weeks) or through the whole year, which is Sept 8 – May 18. The teachers can also pair with another teacher and come up with a schedule that works for both teachers. We are also always in need of substitute teachers in all areas: preschool, 5th grade, center teachers, and shepherds. This year we are incorporating music into our Sunday school program, after the Children’s Message, when the kids are released into Sunday school. Kindergarten- 4th grade will be gathering to learn songs for the Christmas Pageant, VBS, and other events. This is an exciting change that we are looking forward to starting up! Also, we are going to extend the Sunday school time until 10:15. This gives the kids more time to learn the bible sto-ries. Speaking of bibles stories, in the first rotation we will be learning about the story of creation and Joseph and Pharaoh. We are looking forward to seeing everyone this fall! Please fill out the registration form included in the Voice (page 3) and have it returned to church by September 1. Registration forms can be found in this Voice, on the Messiah webpage, in the marked bins outside the Christian Education Office, and in the Gathering Area.

We look forward to seeing everyone! Dates to remember:

It is Time to “Catch-Up on Our Giving!” Summer time! Time to play catch….catch-up on giving that is. As I’ve mentioned before summer time is a financially challenging time for Messiah when our congregation takes much needed vacations and stay-cations. But the great work of Messiah doesn’t take a break! Your gifts helped make Vacation Bible School and the recent youth mission trip to St. Louis a reality. Please consider catching up on your giving before school starts. This would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Also, for those of you who are likely to miss some of the remaining Sundays this summer, please remember that Simply Giving through Thrivent Financial can you help ensure that your weekly donation is given consistently throughout the summer. If you would like to sign up for Simply Giving please go to our website, click on the $ sign in the lower left corner and follow the instructions (http://www.messiah-wauconda.org/). You can also make a one-time contribution at this site to get your giving caught up. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me

Messiah’s Constitution Update Per the Messiah Constitution, this important document is to be reviewed and amended every few years. The last update was ap-proved in 2010, so its time for an update. The Council affirmed a committee for this purpose consisting of Jerry Stark, Steve

Snow, Pastor Dawn, and Dave Kimes. Since this document represents the voice of the congre-gation in how Messiah is run, your feedback is important to this effort. The updated docu-ment is anticipated to be approved at the January 2014 Meeting of the Congregation. In preparation for this approval, a draft will be made available during the weekend of September 8/9 for review. If you’d like a digital copy of this document, please email [email protected] and a copy will be sent to you. We will use the Sept 22 Town Hall meeting as a forum to provide any needed clarification and to collect comments for consideration in the final draft. Thanks in advance for your help with this important activity.

"God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has designated Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, to be a day of service and is being called "God's

Work. Our Hands." Sunday. Messiah is called to celebrate our Anniversary and our Church’s commitment to sharing God’s love with our neighbors. Messiah is asking you to take part in a dedicated day of service on Sept. 8. Many work every day to welcome neighbors and make our community a better place. Now let’s do it together as one body, using our hands to do God’s work in Jesus Christ’s name. Imagine nearly 10,000 E.L.C.A. congregations serving meals, making quilts for refugees, cleaning up our neighborhoods, or simply visiting the neighbors who need us. We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. Please mark your calendars now for Sunday, Sept. 8 and watch for more details in the church bulletin. If you have a service project to suggest for Sept. 8, please call Bonnie Jones, (847)540-5798 or Grace Jorgensen, (847)526-4306.
