From The Pastor’s Pen Susan V. Mills

Vacation Bible School offered the opportunity to “unplug” for a brief period of time from the smart phone, computer, and constant “pings” of incoming e-mails and messages. From 9:00am—12:30pm each day, a different kind of “noise” entered our lives! Joyous connections were made with children as relationships were built or renewed.

At one point during the week I was reminded once again of C. S. Lewis’s satirical book, The Screwtape Letters, first published in 1942. In the book, Lewis has Uncle Screwtape, a senior devil, writing letters to his nephew, Wormwood, who is a junior devil. One paragraph in particular seemed prophetic. Uncle Screwtape writes:

Noise defends us from silly qualms, despairing scruples and impossible desires. We will make the whole universe a noise in the end. The melodies and silences of heaven will be shouted down in the end. But we are not yet loud enough. Research is in progress.

One might think that the prince of the power of the air has done an amazing job of research in escalating the level of noise in the world during the intervening 70 years! Perhaps the “research” of which Uncle Screwtape wrote led to the most relevant distraction in our digital age: The constant pinging and blinking of our cellphones, and all the “snow” of incoming mail that piles up in our digital mailboxes. Its sad to see folks visiting the beach yet walking on the beach with ear buds plugged into their ears so they can listen to their own personal play list rather than the ocean. Or truth be told, how many of us cannot help but keep an ever-distracted eye on our smart phones as we walk down the beach or sit in conversation with others? It was with those thoughts that I decided to set aside these distractions during VBS so that I could focus on the children. As a result, I must confess that I still haven’t shoveled out from under the “snow” of emails that piled up in my mailbox during that week!

We had 15 children join us for VBS, of which only four attend our church. I have had folks ask: “Why do we bother hosting a VBS when the parents and children will never grace the doors of our church on Sunday mornings?” The short answer is that we offer VBS to our community because we are a community church. However, I believe the best answer just may be that VBS provides the children the opportunity to shut off some of the “noise” and distractions of this world, and allows them to hear and feel the love of God expressed through the Word of God, song, creativity, exploration, active playtime, and the kindness and love of God’s people. We become not only a respite from the noise of this age, we allow the children the opportunity to hear the melodies and silences of heaven and this beautiful world. They are introduced to a God who loves them unconditionally.

What a privilege and honor we have been given! May we continue to love these little souls well, if only for a short season. May we simply plant and water the seeds of God’s love, remembering it is the Spirit who draws them to us, and it is the Lord who gives the harvest.

May we continue to share the Good News with the children of Waldport for years to come. May we be a place where hearts are opened to the amazing love of God!

In Christ’s love,

Pastor Susan V. Mills

Thanks to all for prayers, good wishes, cards, flowers and visits while I was on “vacation”. The surgery went well and pathology report was negative for any malignancy or metastases. The radiation therapy went very well and it only lasted five days.

I had wonderful care and thank God and his “helpers” that everything went so smoothly with no glitches.

All Are Welcome—Come as You Are!

Communion

Communion will be observed on September 6th. In thankfulness for all that Christ has done for us, we remember to reach out with Christ’s love to those who are hit hard by this economic

downturn. Please remember to bring in your food donations and drop them off in the Wishing Well in the front entry of the church, or you may simply choose to make a monetary donation to Waldport Food Share by including it with your Sunday morning offering. Simply make a notation on the memo line for Waldport Food Share. Food Share is currently experiencing a shortage of food and having to turn folks away.

Our August donation to Waldport Food Share was 81 pounds of food. Please remember to bring in your cans and other non-

perishable items!
