T H E C H U R C H O F F I C E W I L L B E C L O S E D MONDAY, MAY 31st

They originally called it Decoration Day; a few still do. It was an opportunity to decorate the graves of the 600,000 men who died in the Civil War. It was our nation’s costliest war in terms of human life, nearly 2 percent of the population. Today, that would translate to 6.5 million people.

Decoration days caught on quickly. Within three years of the end of the war, communities around the United States were remembering those who lost their lives in the Civil War. John A. Logan, a Union General, helped establish a nationwide day of remembrance on May 30.

The tradition expanded following WWI, when 117,000 American soldiers died. At that time, the idea of Memorial Day was expanded to include all wars. Over the years, it eventually became for many, a day not unlike the church’s All Saints Day. As a child I remember my grandmother taking me to the cemetery to decorate the graves of her parents.

In 1971, Memorial Day was shifted to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. Over the next few decades, the emphasis of time off, family gatherings, and races like the Indianapolis 500 have slowly taken center stage. Some, including the late Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, are concerned that we have lost the power of a day for remembering. He wanted it to return to the 30th in hopes that we’d reclaim the

power of memorializing. He was right. There is a sacred responsibility

to remember those who have gone before us, particularly those who have sacrificed their lives in service. Sacrificial love inspires because it is the most divine love, modeled by Jesus. He gave His actions words: “No one has greater love than to give up one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13).

Memorial Day encourages us to remember those who have sacrificed for us, some in service to country, some in our rearing, and some in service of community and church, like Pastor Bob. I encourage you to set aside a time this weekend to remember. (Three o’clock on Monday is the appointed time.) Make a list of those you want to honor; offer up a prayer of gratitude. Memorialize them. In doing so, you will do what Jesus challenged us to do, “Do this in remembrance of me.”

FAQ

When do services begin? We will return to in-person worship June 6, 2021 with our 10:00 am worship service.

How long will worship be? Our worship will be a hybrid of our online worship offered this past year and our previous service. It will be forty-five to fifty minutes. This follows best practice recommendations for a high-quality experience when the congregation is both in person and online.

So, the online service will continue? Yes, and even better. It will be an actual livestream of the service at 10:00. You will also be able to replay the service later in the day or week.

How will we be seated?Every other pew will be marked as available until June 15, when COVID-19 guidelines of capacity, social distancing and masks are expected to be lifted. We encourage you to spread out on the pew, sitting 6 feet apart from other family units.

Are masks required? Yes, currently masks are required for indoor gatherings even if you are vaccinated. Churches are not exempt.

Will Bibles and hymnals be available? Early concerns centered on the spread of COVID-19 on surfaces. As this is now considered a small risk, Bi-bles and hymnals will be available for your use.

Will communion be served? Communion will be available as you enter, prepack-aged, and sealed as individual units with a wafer and juice. This will be our form of communion for the near term, a new level of sanitation which the CDC encouraged.

Will an offering be received? Offering boxes will be available as you enter or exit the facility. For the near term, the plate will not be passed. Again, this is a new sanitation protocol.

Will there be special music and singing? Yes, we will offer the same outstanding worship expe-rience you expect from our church. Vaccinated wor-ship leaders and musicians will be unmasked when leading worship. But they will remain socially dis-tanced from one another until after June 15.

Can I talk and sing? Yes, you can participate in worship if seated socially distanced from others and are wearing a mask. Joyful singing expresses our heart for God.

Will there be a meet and greet after service? Community is at the heart of church and a special time at FCCNH. But it is also a good vehicle for virus transmission. Meet and greet will not resume until after June 15 when COVID-19 guidelines of capacity and social distancing are expected to be lifted.

Children’s ministryChildren will begin worship and then be excused for a Children’s Message in the chapel followed by social-ly-distanced Sunday School.

Youth ministry Middle school and high school youth will begin in worship and then be excused to socially-distanced classes in the youth hut.
