Riachuelo is one of the biggest fashion retail in Brazil. The goal is to have a full BIM approach to their new projects.

The company was having issues during construction due to the lack of compatibility between different disciplines involved on the project, resulting on more investments to fix those problems on site, delaying the construction works, and often resulting on unpleasant amendments visible by the public.

Our goal is to develop a BIM model that will foresee problems by detecting collisions between MEP, structure and architecture elements. Also by building their standard elements and construction details, we can generate automated quantities for pricing and construction tender.

SanPietro is a small social housing development on the surrounds of Curitiba - Brazil. The brief was to design a modern building using low cost solutions and exploring the site’s full potencial. Developers and contractors understood that BIM was the tool that would allow them to have the productivity and management needed to meet the project’s tight budget.

We have been hired to design and develop the project on a full BIM approach, managing all stages of design, extracting quantities for cost estimation and managing consultants models for conflict checking.

Residencial Porto AlegreSocial Housing

Porto Alegre Residencial is the beginning of a social housing enterprise for the office. Brazil has a increasing demand for small low cost housing, and very often the projects delivered by local developers have poor design and living conditions. Our challenge was to create a design that delivers quality of space, natural lighting and good ventilation, in a building that costs around U$200 per square meter to build.

We begun locating our houses at locations that has easy access to public transport, and plots that provide enough space of a garden. Secondly we researched for a ecological brick that could be fabricated at the construction site using a hydraulic press. This decreased the cost by 65%.

Another challenge was to develop drawings that were easily comprehended by builders with poor qualification. So we used 3D documentation that illustrated details and design solutions.

Estação da Cultura I.F.Concert Hall

The Estação da Cultura Itamar Franco will be the house for the city Philharmonic Orchestra. The complex has a concert hall with 14.000 seats, music classrooms, coffee and lounge area and a attached building for a local Radio station. The project utilized complex solutions and shapes in order to achieve the desired acoustic performance, such as double curvature wall and complex profiles.

The construction drawings was initially made using standard 2D Cad tools, but contractors soon realized it wouldn’t meet the expectations and deadline required. So I’ve been invited to implement BIM in the project, training the team and working as a consultant on its detailed drawings.

The main reason to use BIM was to increase productivity and reduce mistakes. But we extended its advantages produce a more comprehensive 3D documentation and conflict checking with the MEP models.

Crayg-y-BwlaNeo Gothic Extension

The project challenge was to Manage and Develop the construction drawings of an attic extension to a much altered Welsh farmhouse, using a BIM tool. The site of the house in a National Park location meant that the strictest planning restraint was in place, however, the local conservation officer gave his backing to our approach involving a regency gothic styled extension, with natural stone battlements and pinnacles made by Joslins of Oxford.

We have modeled the existing and new proposed elements in order to have critical analysis of it’s solutions, check conflicts and create intuitive comprehensive drawings. Exploring 2D and 3D documentation, we created a set of drawings that contributed of a construction with less troubles and therefore more economical.

Research

Skyscrapers are living organisms. A complex formation of multiple complex systems working together in order to attend specific needs of it’s users, it surroundings, environmental and social issues.

Designing skyscrapers need multiple variables to be considered and calculated, therefore it requires a big group of specialised professionals, in order to generate one good enough solutions using conventional tools.

Evolutionary Design Systems, is a design tool that can compute multiple complex variables and reach a extensive number of optimised solutions for different design issues.

Defining the Variables

Before applying the GA in the skyscraper, some variables had to be defined:Tower Central Core. The skyscraper is made of a combination of 3 central core where vertical circulation and structure take place.Tower Height. Each Central Core can have a different heights.Tower Direction. The Central Core can also have a direction each. This direction is defined by a vector. Proximity. In some cases two central cores are directed towards each other, so a new rule is set: If a central core is close enough to another, the floor slab at that height is combined creating one larger floor area. Proximity is not a variable, but a rule.Windows. Windows are created along the tower membrane in specific orientations.Performative Cladding. Special panels are placed in order to perform special functionalities for better sustainability. Those are solar panels that harvest solar energy, and water collection panels which are able to collect water from humid air. Those panels are placed in the tower membrane along with the windows and regular cladding.Using those specific variables, the computer program is able to generate towers with different height, orientations, floor plans and cladding placements.

Evolutionary Design Tool

Designing complex systems that takes into consideration multiple variables and behaviours, is very unpredictable. It goes beyond the human capacity to calculate many possible configuration and evolve on that. Complex systems can exhibit expectable order and functionality, but it needs evolution to become truly adaptive to the environment.

In the natural world, complex living organisms has evolved considering environmental variables such as sun light, natural resources and even survival instincts. All very complex variables creating complex shapes and behaviours, and evolution is the system that allowed it to happen.

Evolution consider all variables as raw elements. Tries different combinations of them and check which one works and which ones doesn’t. Evolution get the ones that does and build on top of that. Is a mindless but creative tool to generate adaptable complex systems.

An evolved software a can solve problems that could go beyond the smartest of the humans. It can calculates variables generating thousands of optimised solutions.

Entre EscalasResearch Workshop

Entre Escalas is a research workshop that engaged subjects of parametric design, digital fabrication and the issue of scale on the creation of a urban furniture to be implemented in a the neighborhood of Curitiba – Brazil. The name “Entre Escalas (In Between Scales)” was suggestive as the furniture had to serve the children as a playground during the day, and the adults as kind of bleachers for a jazz show the evening.

The Students had a series of lectures on the subject, computational classes (Rhino + Grasshopper), followed by a intense design competition. Was also present the architects and tutors Gustavo Ultrabo, Pedro Duschenes, Juliano Monteiro, Thiago Mundim and the structural engineer Ricardo Dias.

A second phase of the workshop was to develop a final design that combines the best of each proposal. The students had to make prototypes addressing problems of structure, materials, assembly logic and health & safety. The final phase is yet to come, which is to build a full scale version of the furniture and place it on site.

Knitectonics commenced at the Design Research Laboratory at the Architectural Association, London as a part of the Proto – Design Agenda. The agenda investigated analogue and digital forms of computation in the pursuit of systemic design applications; wherein materials and production processes perform as active agents to accomplish an architectural approach that is both adaptive and hyper specific.

The project premise for the project was to re-engineer standard design and construction processes to achieve economy of means. Economy of means can be defined on various parameters, as efficiency of material, machine, infrastructure, energy, time etc. The research initiated with study of monocoques in nature as well as the man- made world, where the skin is the structure to achieve economy. The challenge was to identify a new system, beyond the limitations presented in existing construction technology by reviewing the need for formwork and proposing a self-structuring prototypical system, which can be fabricated on- site.

POROSIS Project was developed s part of a research on generative systems of hight resolution redundant structures using specific computational procedures and physical prototyping. Our main design challenge was to reinvent the building block within the context of large population constructed fabric that can be differentiated by the change of simple parameters. The research was staged into three core sequences: unit, assembly and deployment.

The Unit was developed combining the versatility of the joint connections, the behavior of stablished angles and the complexity achieved by L-Systems. The hybrid unit have 8 points of connections allowing a logic growth, with closed loops and adaptive design.

The Assembly required hours of explorations in order to learn and develop the system language. Behaviors like spirals, flat surfaces, vertical growth, etc, was catalogued and transformed into a connection code.

Deployment took place using a 1:1 scale during the London Festival of Architecture in 2010.

Delta Container is a company specialized on the re-use of containers. The project brief was to de-velop ideas for their new administrative areas, with a total of 700 square meters.

We chose a site that allow the containers to merge into the forest. It was important that the contain-ers should keep their original colors and tags, like this the building will show that every room has a travel history.

UFPR Campus CabralCompetition

A public competition for the new UFPR university campus, in which will create new facilities for the Arts, Communication and Design courses, and host the university radio, tv and the archeology museum. Part of the brief was to preserve an existing building.

The proposal is to create a metallic bridge structure that could host new classrooms and administrative departments. A public square was created on the shape of an arena that goes eight meters underground.

The competition was a part time adventure that we use to stretch our capabilities on software, project management and teamwork skills.

Higham FarmPrivate Locomotive Museum

Sussex, UK

The Locomotive Store is a private commission to design a museum to house several working express locomotives from the age of steam, along with a valuable collection of railwayana, including signs, nameplates and other associated objects. The project location stands in an AONB where planning restraint is strict; however, because there are currently a range of dilapidated cattle sheds on the site the principle of their replacement with a new museum has been accepted.

The building takes the form of a sweeping, curving shed, clad with copper sheet material; with a serrated roof profile to collect solar energy and allow natural daylight into the interior. The building stands on a sloping site that enable the 70 ton engines to be delivered onto rail lines on two levels, three on parallel lines across the width of the space that are laid on brick viaduct structures to allow for display of railwayana below them; with the remaining locos arranged in a fan shape at the lower level, posted in at the pointed end of the building.

The shell of the building has been devised to prevent light spillage out into the protected landscape, and its mill finish copper cladding is intended to weather to subtle brown and green colours over time, in order to remain as unobtrusive as possible from views in the wider landscape.

Located in a modest plot of land in north London, on which stood a bulky lock-up garage building. Liaising closely with the local authority planning department we devised several optional schemes for the site, including this L shaped house with a green roof and insulated render envelope.

Strict planning restraints on the site due to its modest area and location meant that we were obliged to design within the tightest margins, ensuring that room sizes met with local policies and external amenity space was sufficient. This scheme for a two bedroom house includes a sweeping roof form that allows plenty of light to wash the interior living space.

The kitchen/ dining area occupies one half of the principal living space, from which users can flow out into the garden via sliding patio doors: a feeling of space delivered within the tightest space allowances.

The Campo Grande City Hall is an institucional building to host come of the council administrative agencies. With approximately 4.300 square meter spread through 5 stores, the building will have the capacity to attend over 200 thousand people per month.

Developed various volumetric schemes, 3D renders and photo montage. Also helped developing CAD drawings and detailing. But the biggest achievement for me as a Student Intern was to have the opportunity to present the project to the city mayor and to the city public buildings committee.
