I am distracted by clutter, so at the end of 2008 I set to doing a very deep clean of my studio. It had been a really difficult year and I hadn’t been able to spend much time there other than to open the door and throw things in. When we no longer need certain things around our house (assuming they’re not trash), those things have a tendency to migrate to the basement. If a charity comes around to collect
things and we happen to remember that they’re coming, the things go away. If we don’t remember, all those things that have accumulated drift to the studio where I promise to sort and dispose of them appropriately. Inevitably, the house things then mix with the studio things-to-get-rid-of and I push them into a neat pile in the corner and move on to other projects.
If the pile is really bothering me, I’ll sometimes cover it with a tarp so that it’s out of sight and out of mind. This past year’s pile was further compounded and complicated by boxes and furniture that came from my mother’s house, so that amid the things that were pretty easy to give away were things that were very hard to give away.
To make sense of all of this I took a picture of just about everything I got rid of, minus garbage and recycling. Here is a sample set of those images, in no particular order.
