SCCS K-6 Music: Learning at Home For March 18-26, 2020 Psalm 150
Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.
Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with tambourine and dancing,
praise him with the strings and flute, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.
Learning Target: I can build a musical instrument using resources from around the house The Bible clearly tells us that as Christians we are to commanded to praise the Lord both with our voice and with instruments! Nearly every type of instrument in mentioned in Psalm 150, and as creation enjoyers we realize that music is a gift from God. This week students will create an instrument from items found in your home. Project Instructions:
1. If you have access to a computer, check out the websites listed below for ideas. Or do a search for your own ideas!
2. For K-2nd, students may make either an unpitched or pitched instrument 3. For 3rd-6th, the instruments must be able to change pitch (no shakers, untuned drums, or Kleenex
box guitars) 4. Have a parent send a picture or recording of the instrument to your teacher (K-2 to Mrs. Friend, 3rd-
6th to Mr. Kuipers) by Thursday, March 26. 5. For grades 3-6, answer the following questions and return to Mr. Kuipers. Due date is March 26.
Answers can be a paper copy either handwritten or typed, or students can fill out the following google form. Answers must be in complete sentences. Project is worth 50 points:
Questions for grades 3-6:
1. How was the instrument made? How much time did it take to create? 2. How is the sound produced? Does the instrument have to be strummed? Blown into? Struck?
Tapped? Shaken? Tipped? 3. How do you change the pitch? How can you change the dynamics? 4. What "real" instrument is this homemade instrument most like, and why?
Grading Rubric (for 3rd-6th students):
• Written response - 20 points • Instrument created - 20 points • Appearance/Neatness/Attention to detail - 10 points
Here are few pictures of examples to get you thinking!
Rattle Drum Wrench Xylophone
Websites for Inspiration Here are three websites to check out for ideas on how to make your instrument!
• How Wee Learn • Red Tricycle • Buggy and Buddy
A Note to the 5th & 6th Choir Students Consider this exploration into homemade instruments an extension of your learning in General Music with Mrs. De Vries. In the next few weeks, we will find a way to incorporate singing into your at-home learning.
Parents of SCCS,
God is in control!! Even when we do not understand, we rest knowing God has
coronavirus and everything in His hands! My deep hope this year is that we will,
“Trust God in ALL Circumstances.” It is my prayer that each of us will grow in our
trust of God through these difficult seasons. With the spread of COVID-19 and
school closures you may see more anxiety in your students. This will look different
for each individual student. Some may be willing to talk about fears, or become
angry, easily frustrated, withdrawn. Some students may experience nightmares,
anxiety attacks or more fears.
As you discuss COVID-19 with your children be aware that they are taking their
cues from you. Remember everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. 1. Do
your best to remain calm (even if internally you are not feeling calm). 2. Point your
children to Christ. Let them hear of your faith, knowing that God is faithful and we
know that He holds the future. 3. Discuss openly and yet age appropriate issues of
the coronavirus. The handouts below will serve as an excellent guide for your
discussions. 4. Validate their feelings of anxiety, fear etc 5. It is ok to say “I don’t
know” We do not know all the answers but we can talk to the Creator of the
Universe that does have the answers. 5. Reassure them of your love and support
along the daily plan. Giving them structure to know what the plan is helps to
provide security.

Things to do with your kids while school is
closed:
Children do better with structure and routine. Having a set plan or
routine will help them to feel safe. Create a daily plan each day and let
your children be part of that plan so they are invested. You may modify
each day to fit your own family schedule.
1. Kids should be doing all assigned learning from their teachers.
2. Scholastic has made their learning from home resources free during
this time of school closures. Here is the link and you can choose your
child’s grade level:
