Hokie Football
Fun Facts Terms and Definitions:
Hokie: In 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical
College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute, writing a new cheer became a necessity and a contest was held by the student body. Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his “Hokie” yell (Old Hokie Cheer), which is still used today. Later, when asked if “Hokie” had any special meaning, Stull explained the word was solely the product of his imagination and was used only as an attention‐getter for his yell. It soon became a nickname for all Virginia Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech. Now when asked what a Hokie is, people answer, “I am!”
Burnt Orange and Chicago Maroon: During 1896, a committee was formed to find a suitable combination of colors to replace the original colors of black and gray. The committee selected burnt orange and Chicago maroon after discovering that no other college utilized this particular combination of colors. Burnt orange and Chicago maroon were officially adopted and were first worn during a football game versus nearby Roanoke College on October 26, 1896.
Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC): On July 1, 2004, Virginia Tech joined the ACC. As a member of the Coastal
Division, Virginia Tech often competes with some of the
nation’s best athletic programs. Other schools in the ACC
include: Clemson, Louisville, Florida State, NC State, Wake
Forest, Boston College, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Miami,
University of North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech,
Duke, and University of Virginia.
Skipper: In the 1960s, one industrious student formally
proposed to the student governing body that a cannon be
acquired to fire at football games. About the same time,
two cadets from the class of 1964 made a pact at a
traditional VPI‐VMI Thanksgiving Day game that they would
build a cannon for Virginia Tech (then known as VPI) to
outshine — or outblast — Virginia Military Institute's "Little
John." They derived the name "Skipper" from the fact that
President John Kennedy, who had just been assassinated,
had been the skipper of a PT‐boat, and they wanted to do
something to honor him. Today, Skipper is fired outside
Lane Stadium when the football team enters the field and
scores.
Lane Stadium/Worsham Field (Capacity 66,233; Bermuda Grass)
2005: Toughest place in college football for opponents according to Rivals.com 2007: ESPN.com claimed one of the scariest places to play Overall Record at Home: 215‐81‐6 prior to entering the 2017/18 season
Head Coach: Justin Fuente
HokieBird: In 1982, the appearance of the Gobbler mascot
costume was changed to one that looked like a maroon
cardinal with a snood, and references first appeared to it as
"the Hokie mascot," "the Hokie," and "the HokieBird." The
costume worn by today's HokieBird made its first
appearance in 1987. HokieBird has won national mascot
competitions and has been so popular that the mascot
landed an appearance on Animal Planet's "Turkey Secrets."
Lane Stadium: Lane Stadium is home to the Virginia Tech
Hokies. Originally constructed in 1965, Lane Stadium has
gone through numerous expansions and currently holds a
capacity of 66,223 students, alumni and fans. Virginia Tech
is known to have a large home‐field advantage, leading to
the success of 24 straight bowl games and eight seasons
with 10 or more wins.
Enter Sandman: In 2000, Virginia Tech started using the Metallica’s song “Enter Sandman” as the football team’s
entrance music. The entrance video was first used in the
season opener in 2000 versus Georgia Tech. The game was
later canceled due to severe lightning, never replayed, and
is known as the game when lightning struck Lee Corso’s car.
The tradition of jumping did not start until a few years later
when the Marching Virginians began jumping to the music
during a cold game, thus starting a new tradition. Enter
Sandman has since become one of the most famous
entrances in college football and has become a song loved
by all of the Hokie Nation.
This is Home: The recently adopted phrase “This is Home”
is a representation of the Hokie Spirit. Virginia Tech is
known for its pride and sense of community. Whenever a
student, alumni, or fan steps foot on campus, they are
“home” among the Hokie Nation.
Lunch Pail Defense (LPD): Virginia Tech defense has had a long history of being one of the top in the country under
the leadership of Bud Foster. One tradition that represents
the hard work and relentlessness shown on the field is an
old lunch pail. Known for having a blue‐collar defense, the
lunch pail is a perfect symbol. This tradition started in 1995
when Foster decided to give his defense an identity. What
symbol could be better than an old lunch pail that had seen
many hours of hard work and dedication? The lunch pail is
contains the defense’s mission statement, keys to success,
goals of the players, turf from fields of road victories, and
the names of the 32 victims from the 4‐16‐2007 shootings.
Each week the MVP on the defense has the honor of being
in charge of the lunch pail.
“Old Hokie” Cheer
Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hy! Tech, Tech, VPI Sol‐a‐rex, Sol‐a‐rah Poly Tech Vir‐gin‐ia Ray rah VPI Team! Team! Team!
Tech Triumph Techmen, we're Techmen, with spirit true and faithful,
Backing up our teams with hopes undying; Techmen, Oh, Techmen, we're out to win today, Showing pep and life with which we're trying; V.P., old V.P., you know our hearts are with you In our luck which never seems to die; Win or lose, we'll greet you with a glad returning, You're the pride of V.P.I. Chorus: Just watch our men so big and active Support the Orange and Maroon. Let's go Techs. We know our ends and backs are stronger, With winning hopes, we fear defeat no longer. To see our team plow through the line, boys. Determined now to win or die: So give a Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hi, Rae, Ri, old V.P.I. Second Verse (seldom used) Fight, men, oh, fight, men, we're going to be the champions Adding to our list another victory; Football or baseball, the games in which we star, They're the sports which made old VP famous. Hold'em, just hold'em, you know the Corps' behind you Watching every movement that you make. Winning games was nothing for our teams before you ‐‐ Keep the "rep" for VP's sake.
Defensive Back University (DBU): DBU is a claim that
many schools like to make. With 21 defensive backs drafted
to the NFL since 1997, Virginia Tech proudly considers
themselves DBU. While this can be a controversial claim, the
chant “DBU” can be heard throughout the stadium when
defensive backs make big plays — for example,
interceptions.
BeamerBall: The term BeamerBall was born in the 1990’s
when Virginia Tech blocked 66 kicks over a decade. This was
more than any school in the country and became
frightening to opponents. The idea of special teams making
a big impact on the game was one that Frank Beamer,
retired legendary Head Coach from 1987 to 2015,
understood. The momentum shifts from blocked kicks,
punts, and touchdowns can make the difference in a game.
When special teams makes a game changing play, this is
known at Virginia Tech as BeamerBall.
VPI Victory March
(Revised 2000)
Verse: You've seen Mountaineers fumble, You've been in Hurricanes' eye, And you know 'ol Syracuse Has learned the force of Hokie‐Hi. Worthy teams from all around, Like Hoos from UVA, Know a winning team awaits them; Victory is ours today. Break Strain: GO, TECH! GO, TECH! H‐O‐K‐I‐E‐S, HOKIES!
