Things We Can’t Control

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF

Ascension & St. Augustine

“Receive, live, and share Christ!” - from the CCASTA Mission Statement

www.ccasta.org August 29, 2021

When it comes to life situations, there are more times than we like to count, events that happen we have no control over. We didn’t invite them into our life, and we didn’t cause them. They just happened. As someone said, “that’s just life”.

However, a Christian sees differently. And a Christian responds differently to the “things we don’t have control over.” Whether it be a pandemic, or a financial situation you didn’t expect, or an adult child battling an addiction, or a personal health challenge, a Christian sees differently. How we “see” matters is how we respond. It is the difference from living in peace to living torn by anxiety.

St. Paul writing to the Philippians said this: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” St. Paul wrote this from prison-awaiting a possible execution. So, what made him say this?

He had an immovable position and commitment to the truth that Jesus Christ is Lord. Which meant, no matter what was going on in his life he didn’t “bargain” for, Jesus was still in control. Someone greater than himself was in charge of His life. He also knew this: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

So when you don’t have control over things, turn Fr. Dale
