WHAT ADULTS & TEENSNEED TO KNOW:
• As an adult, you cannot give alcohol tosomeone under 21 who is not your son ordaughter, under any circumstance, even inyour own residence, even with their parent’s permission unless they are visiblypresent.• You cannot knowingly allow a personunder 21, other than your own child, toremain in your home or on your propertywhile consuming or possessing alcohol.• Your residence … your responsibility.
IF YOU BREAK THE LAW:• You face a possible jail sentence.• You may be fined.• You can be sued if you give alcohol to anyone under age 21 and they, in turn, hurtsomeone, hurt themselves, or damage property.
THINGS YOU CAN DO:• Refuse to supply alcohol to youth.• Actively supervise parties when youth willbe attending.• Make sure alcohol is not brought into yourhome or onto your property by underageyouth.• Talk to other adults about not providingalcohol at events youth will be attending.• Create alcohol-free opportunities andactivities in your home so youth will feel welcome.
WHY 21?• Alcohol kills 6 ½ times more young peoplethan all other illegal drugs combined.• Youth who drink alcohol are 7 ½ timesmore likely to use any illicit drug, more than22 times more likely to use marijuana, and50 times more likely to use cocaine thanyouth who never drank.• An adolescent’s central nervous system
and brain are not yet fully developed andare especiallysensitive to alcohol and other drugs.Addiction happens much faster - in as little as6-18 months.• Underage drinking is the leading cause ofadult alcoholism.• National data reveals more than 16,500traf fic deaths have been averted sincestates started raising the minimum drinkingage to 21.• Youth who begin drinking before age 15are four times more likely to develop alcoholdependence than youth who wait until 21.
