DESCRIPTION

To some people, a classroom is four walls and a ceiling. You are not those people. And neither are we. At Colby-Sawyer College, learning happens everywhere: while checking a patient’s vitals at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, decoding the chemistry behind the beer at a local brewery or climbing to the top of Mount Kearsarge. Because at Colby-Sawyer College, we want to entertain your brain — wherever it happens to be.

Scrub in! Our Nursing Program puts you face-to-face with patients while training at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Get clinical experience in our own nursing and simulation lab. And to make you feel even better: Our graduates consistently pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses with some of the highest rates in the country.

Our students hail from over 35 countries, and we love to celebrate that diversity. We offer organizations like the African Students Association, the Hispanic-Latino Club and the Cross Cultural Club to share customs and tradi-tions. A residence hall Cultural Day might have you eating momos, learning to write your name in Nepali and turning your hand into a work of art.

Who knew you could get college credit for making beer? The lucky students of SCI 250: Brewing Science, for starters. Head to the local Flying Goose pub, where your chemistry professor and the brewmaster will show you the science behind the brewing. Analyze hops, learn about fermentation, create a recipe and, finally, brew your own beer. Here’s to cool classes.

Going green means going places. We created a three-part Environmental Studies course that allowed students to actually construct a building insulated with straw bales (the first commercial one in New Hampshire). Today, its funky swing chairs, natural-paint ceiling and cob benches provide the perfect spot to dream up your own way to change the world.

Colby-Sawyer is located smack-dab in the middle of New England’s scenic Lake Sunapee region. Since the 1850s, it’s been our fall tradition to cancel classes one day and hike nearby Mount Kearsarge together. Learn about rock formations and plant life native to the area, the effects of the 1796 fire — and how to look at things from a different angle.

All of our students are interns, too. On average, one-third are hired by the businesses and organizations where they completed their internship. Graphic design majors have honed their skills at places like Birchtree Creative Services, Life is good and Bulldog Design. Watch your ideas come to life, make connections in your field and maybe even meet your most loyal fan.

Child development majors, meet the kids of our Windy Hill School. This laboratory school has toddler and nursery programs, which means you can learn about children in their own environment. Discover how your skills get better right along with theirs as you observe, create lesson plans and teach these little ones.

Sometimes you don’t know exactly what you’re interested in yet. And guess what? That’s okay. Because college is for exploring. Maybe you’re an English major who’s always been curious about art history. Try an internship somewhere like the Currier Museum of Art, where O’Keefe, Picasso and Monet might help you figure out your next move.

The best way to get real experience? The real world. That’s why all of our students complete at least one internship. As an exercise science major, you might push your limits (and some arms and legs) at a physical therapist’s office. Past Colby-Sawyer internships include S.M.A.R.T. PT, Harvard Athletic Department and the New England Patriots.
