On behalf of the Spanish Organizing Committee, we are pleased to invite you to attend the XI International Conference on Goats (ICG), in Gran Canaria (Canary Isles, Spain), from 24th to 27th September 2012.
The “International Conferences on Goats” are not-‐to-‐be-‐missed events that offer scientists, extension agents, professional and public decision makers from all over the world opportunity to get up-‐to-‐date on the latest in the goat and small livestock sectors. In addition, at the event delegates can participate in scientific debates, extension, local initiatives as well as examining ways of addressing the main challenges for these activities at technical, economic and social levels.
The “International Conferences on Goats” are organized in different places every four years and this is the first time it will take place in Spain, in the Canary Islands, a place that forms a real bridge between Europe, Africa and Latin America.
We have decided to entitle this Conference ‘Industrial and rural activities in the goat sector including science, innovation and development’. The title was chosen to show our awareness that goat, alongside all animal production, are affected by current world challenges: Climatic change, energy crisis, the fight against poverty. These stakes require new types of interaction between scientific knowledge and actors’ know-‐how plus the increasing need for innovation and communication between the different disciplines.
To achieve these objectives, we propose main presentations and posters, to organize forums, workshops and debates to share experiences, new ideas and proposals to complement the traditional scientific seminars.
Thanks to the collaboration between the International Goat Association, supporting our Conference and the International Fund on Agriculture and Development, a special workshop will be organized on the role of goats in the fight against poverty and operational aspects of building efficient projects with the participation of actors and specialists of all continents.
The scientific quality of the contributions is expected to be extremely high and the very best will be published in Small Ruminant Research, the official Journal of the International Goat Association.
Here you will find details of the program, the scientific committee, how to register, grants to encourage young scientists, students and other innovative people to attend.
Our team and the entire Spanish goat sector are looking forward to welcoming you and showcasing our achievements in the Canaries.
Juan Capote and Anastasio Argüello
Joint Presidents of the Organizing Committee
WELCOME MESSAGE

The XI ICG is imminent. We will soon meet in the Canary Islands. Since the publication of the second announcement, several things have been changed and innovations implemented, in order to improve the quality of the congress and to make the meeting more enjoyable for the attendants. Relevant invited speakers and chair persons have been appointed and scholarships have been assigned. Also coordinators of round tables, seminary and the workshop have been designated and currently we are working to complete the list of speakers for each event’s table.
In the new program you will know the timetable and rooms for each session and other specific meetings. Participants can choose between two technical tours which will include visits to farms, small cheese factories, University and traditional Canarian villages. Other activities, such as beach sports, have been organized for the participants’ enjoyment. One important change is the date of the Gala Dinner, which has been moved to the day before (26th Wednesday) following suggestions of several participants. As a consequence, the IGA’s assembly has also been forwarded to 25th (Tuesday).
More than 500 abstracts from about 50 countries have been submitted, which is a demonstration of the great interest that our meeting has generated around the world.
We hope that you have a nice trip and that you enjoy your stay with us.
The venue chosen by the organizing committee is the five Star hotel Sercotel Cristina Las Palmas, located on the promenade of the Las Canteras beach (see the venue web page www.hotelcristinalaspalmas.com/index.php/en).
Other hotel possibilities closer to the venue will be offered by the meeting secretary. Las Canteras beach offer to us a wonderfully environment and warm atmosphere to reach a successful conference.

1. Click “Page Setup” in the “File” menu. 2. In the drop-‐down box for “Slides sized for” make sure “On-‐screen Show” is
selected. 3. Do NOT change the values in the “Width” or “Height” boxes. 4. In the “Orientation” frame, the “Landscape” should be selected for “Slides” Fonts
What fonts you can use depends on whether you are using a PC or a Mac.
If you are using a PC, all fonts must be embedded. See the next section "Embedding Fonts (PC users)". For more detailed information, please see http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00076_Embedding_fonts.htm. The Mac version of PowerPoint cannot embed fonts, so if you are using a Mac you must only use fonts that are included with Windows XP and later and Office 2007 and later. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/default.aspx and choose the appropriate product from the drop-‐down box to get a list of fonts that will be available. To be extra safe, you may choose to restrict yourself to Arial, Times New Roman (NOT Times!), Courier New (NOT Courier!), Symbol, and WingDings. Embedding TrueType Fonts (PC users)
TrueType fonts are the only fonts that may be embeddable, but not all TrueType fonts are embeddable. To test whether PowerPoint can embed the fonts you would like to use, follow these steps:
Create a test PowerPoint presentation that includes some text in each font that you would like to test. Click “Save As…” in the “File” menu. In the “Save As” window, click the “Tools” button near the top right edge of the window, and then click "Save Options". At the bottom of the "Save Options" window, make sure “Embed TrueType Fonts” is checked and check "Embed All Characters". Then, click "OK" to close the "Save Options" window. Enter a filename and choose a location for the file (arbitrary) and click the “Save” button. If a window with the title “Save with Fonts” appears, then not all of the fonts that you used can be embedded. The column “Cannot be saved:” will list the fonts that cannot be embedded. You will not be able to use these fonts in your presentation.
12
Slide Animations and Transitions
Any slide animations or transitions that are standard with PowerPoint 2003 or older may be used.
Video and Sound
The presentation rooms will NOT be set up for playing sound from the presentation computer. Video clips can be used within presentations, but keep in mind that they will play without sound. Video clips cannot be “embedded” in PowerPoint presentations. If you are using a PC and you include video clips, you will need to use the “Pack and Go” function. Video clips should be in MPEG-‐1 (.mpeg, .mpg, .m1v) or Windows Media Video (.wmv) formats. You can use the AVI format ONLY if you use the Cinepak or Indeo 3.2 codecs. You can also include a video clip in Quicktime (.mov) format, but you must insert it as a hyperlink.
