Scripture Corner:

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Jonah 3:1-5, 10 Jonah set out for Nineveh as God asked and told the people that their city would be destroyed in forty days. The people believed him and repented from their evil ways. God did not destroy their city, show-ing his mercy for those who see the evil of their ways and correct it.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 Paul advises the Corinthians that their world is changing, so they should not take their daily trials too seriously. We should remember that the prob-lems of everyday living will not last forever, but the eternal life God promises us will.

Gospel: Mark 1:14-20 Jesus observes Simon and Andrew where they are fishing and tells them to come with him and become “fishers of men.” They abandon their nets without hesitation to follow him. Next he calls James and his brother John, who also leave what they are doing and follow him without question.

ARE YOU REGISTERED?

From time to time people come to the Rectory because they have the honor of being asked to be a Godparent for a Baptism or a Sponsor for a Confirmation and they need a document from us. This document states that they are members in good standing of this parish. The only way we can comply with this request is if the individual is indeed, a registered member of the parish who worships here on a regular basis. Please note that although you may have registered with the Religious Education Office or you may have made all your sacraments here at St. Marys, this does not automatically mean that you are registered with the Parish! If you would like to become a fully registered member or check to see if you are registered, please stop by or call the Rectory. If you are new to the parish, Fr. Duff would like to greet you personally!

The month of January is dedicated to the Holy Name and the Childhood of Jesus. It is also time to celebrate CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK! The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2018 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” The annual observance starts on Sunday, January 28th and runs until Saturday, February 3rd. Our schools typically celebrate Catholic Schools Week with Masses, open houses, and other activities for students, families, parishioners, and the community at large. Below are the dates and times for Open Houses at our Northern Westchester and Putnam Catholic elementary schools. We welcome you and your families to visit our schools and see firsthand the true value of a Catholic education. We hope that you will stop by!

Our next Touring Tuesday is scheduled for January 30th, from 9-11am or by appointment.

Reservations are required and can be made online at CatholicSchoolsNY.org or by calling our bilingual phone line 646-794-2885.

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
