Today’s first reading and the gospel reading give us two stories of prophets. The second story tells us of the first meeting between Jesus and his first apostles, Simon and Andrew. We might think that the calling is too lofty for us, but each one of us is called to be a prophet. At the moment of our baptism we are anointed into the priesthood, the prophecy, and the kingship of Jesus Christ. A prophet is one who speaks the word of God. God’s word is never spoken without powerful effect. The word ‘prophet’ is often understood to be one who foretells future events. This is not the biblical understanding of the term. A prophet lives and proclaims the faith, bringing others around him closer to God. That is the job of all of us! As Catholics, we are responsible for bringing our faith to others. Are You a Prophet?

Today’s first reading and the gospel reading give us

two stories of prophets. The first, Jonah, was a

reluctant prophet who only accepted his mission after

suffering the consequences of disobedience to God.

The second story tells us of the first meeting between

Jesus and his first apostles, Simon and Andrew. They

answered Christ’s call at once, abandoning their lives

and livelihoods in order to follow the Lord.

To his surprise, Jonah's preaching met with great

success, and the city of Nineveh was brought to

repentance and conversion through his words.

Andrew and Simon also became successful in their

calling as speakers of God’s word.

Are you called to be a prophet? We might think that

the calling is too lofty for us, but each one of us is

called to be a prophet. At the moment of our baptism

we are anointed into the priesthood, the prophecy,

and the kingship of Jesus Christ. A prophet is one who

speaks the word of God. God’s word is never spoken

without powerful effect.

The word ‘prophet’ is often understood to be one who

foretells future events. This is not the biblical

understanding of the term. A prophet lives and

proclaims the faith, bringing others around him closer

to God. That is the job of all of us!

As Catholics, we are responsible for bringing our faith

to others. How will we respond? Reluctantly, like

Jonah, or at once, like Simon and Andrew?

PIONEERS IN “FAKE NEWS”—

THE ABORTION INDUSTRY

By Maria Gallagher, Leg. Dir., PA Pro-Life Federation (1/8/2018)

…the abortion industry was actually a pioneer in the

concept [of “fake news”], blazing the way for lies and

dissimulations that continue to this day.

Dr. Bernard Nathanson, a co-founder of the National

Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws (later the National

Abortion Rights Action League), admitted years ago that he had

flat-out lied about the number of women who obtained abortions

illegally in the U.S. prior to the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court

decision Roe v. Wade.

He routinely said that one million women were undergoing

“back alley abortions.” He later confessed the statistic was pure

fiction.

Nathanson also lied about the number of women who were

dying from abortion prior to 1973. “It was always ‘5,000 to

10,000 deaths a year.’” Nathanson later said, “I confess that I

knew the figures were totally false, and I suppose the others did

too if they stopped to think of it. But in the ‘morality’ of our

revolution, it was a useful figure, widely accepted, so why go out

of our way to correct it with honest statistics? The overriding

concern was to get the laws [against abortion] eliminated, and

anything within reason that had to be done was permissible,” he

wrote.

Nathanson ultimately had a change of heart and became

pro-life. He said in books and speeches that he was converted

by the new technologies that showed the development of an

unborn baby, particularly ultrasound.

But while the topics change, the fake news about abortion

that he helped originate is a pro-abortion staple. And that

includes ignoring what ultrasound said to Nathanson decades

ago and to us today... [Despite the obvious, for the abortion

industry the baby is still a “blob of tissue,” a “thing.”]

…Abortion activists have also led the public to believe that

Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion operation,

safeguards women’s health by performing mammograms.

Actually, there is not a single Planned Parenthood facility in the

nation that does mammograms, as numerous fact-checking

articles demonstrate. [Two more big lies—abortions are only 3%

of their services and they routinely provide prenatal care.]

The abortion industry was built on lies; how else to sell

abortion to a reluctant public…. https://

Parish Lenten Project: With Lent less than a month away it is

time to look ahead to our annual Parish Lenten project. Once

again we are partnering with St. Francis House, but we continue

to expand our outreach. Along with the St. Francis House we

plan to help with the Food Bank of Alaska, Providence Extended

Care, Hickel House, American Cancer Society, Four A’s. A full

schedule of our “Week of Service” (March 10-17) will be

available on our Peace and Justice page as opportunities firm

up. As the time frame coincides with spring break we are

hoping to have youth and adults working together.

Poverty Awareness Month: Earlier this month we were asked to

consider the many journeys of our brothers and sisters as they

escaped violence, war, famine in the focus on National

Migration Week. Their journeys (as have those of many of our

families) have led to great poverty as they have left everything

behind and in great numbers moved to other countries or other

areas within their own country. Our Church teaches us to

encounter all as children of God and in doing so we stand in

solidarity with them, sharing in their joys and their sufferings.

How do we live out our baptismal call to work with our brothers

and sisters to overcome the poverty they endure?
