PARISH NEWS

Dear Parishioners and Friends: Have you noticed the Great Rose Window? Come to the front of the Church – look up – it is quite a sight. Pictures of the work being done will be appearing on the Parish website, www.blessedsacramentnyc.org, check them out. February 3rd is the Feast of St. Blaise – on this day the traditional Blessing of Throats is offered. The Blessing will be given to those who wish to receive it at the conclusion of the masses at 7:30am, 12:10pm and 5:30pm on Saturday, February 3rd. I will be away from the Parish on a retreat – Pilgrimage for the Priests of the Archdiocese. I am leaving on Thursday night, February 1st and will be returning on Friday, February 9th. Don’t feel bad for me, I will be pilgrimaging and praying in Malta and Sicily. Father Tom Caswell will be with us while I am gone – he arrives on the 30th and leaves us on the 16th of February. Just a reminder – February 14th is Ash Wednesday – make Valentine’s Day February 13th this year. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of strict fast and abstinence. Saints of the week – Wednesday, January 31st, is the Memorial of St. John Bosco. God gifted St. john Bosco (1815 – 1888) with the ability to read and interpret the signs of the times. Living during rapid industrialization and growing anticlericalism, he became very concerned about the emotional and spiritual livelihood of people, especially the plight of the young. St. John worked to provide positive and affirming environments, including orphanages and oratories, where the young could learn and recognize their infinite potential. In the spirit oh his favorite hero, St. Francis de Sales, he founded the Salesians, a religious congregation devoted to works of charity, with an emphasis on empowering young people to become strong pillars of faith in a culture of instability. His work among young men living in the slums proved to be a worthy endeavor. Whether he was presiding at Mass or playing games with children or carrying the sick to hospitals, it was obvious he lives until his “last breath…day and night, morning and evening” for the neglected ad abandoned (as quoted in Butler’s Lives of the Saints: January, New Full Edition, p229). Friday, February 2nd, is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. The Feast of the Presentation is rooted in everyday life. In faithful observance of the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph present Jesus in the Temple to consecrate him to the Lord. There they meet the righteous Simeon and the prophetess Anna, for whom Temple worship was part of

everyday life. God rewarded their fidelity by allowing them to see the one who was Savior and to hold him in their arms. When the ceremony of presentation was completed, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus returned to their hometown. There, they created home and a family life where Jesus grew up, becoming strong and wise, and the grace of God was upon him. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, on February 2, is also called Candlemas Day. According to Luke’s account of the Gospel, / Simeon recognized Jesus as the Messiah in the Temple and declared him “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel” (Luke 2:32). This sparked the tradition of blessing enough candles to last an entire year and to candle procession in churches and in the streets. Saturday, February 3rd, is the Memorial of St. Blaise. Although St. Blaise (316) and St. Ansgar (801-865) were separated by time, they both wanted to care for souls. While serving as bishop of Sebastea, in Armenia, St. Blaise was a visible witness of the Gospel, which eventually led to his martyrdom during the persecutions of Diocletian. His feast day is commemorated with a blessing of throats because legend says that he cured a young boy choking on a fish bone. St. Ansgar, born in France was a monk with a missionary spirit. He longed to travel to distant lands to draw more and more souls to the saving message of Christ. His missionary endeavors were directed toward Scandinavian territory, thus earning him the title Patron of Denmark. He is credited with organizing missions to Denmark, Sweden, and Norway and building the first Christian Church in Sweden. Due to his excellent leadership and preaching skills, St. Ansgar was appointed archbishop of Hamburg. These are very troubled times – don’t forget each day to pray for peace. Father Duffell. FOOD CAMPAIGN Once again, Blessed Sacrament Parish will hold Feeding Our Neighbors to help replenish Food Pantries in our community. From January 27 through February 4, you can Feed Our Neighbors by replenishing the Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry, our sister pantry at the Kennedy Center on West 134th Street. It only takes one small action to feed the hungry. Together we can change lives. Four simple ways to participate are: (1) Bring non-perishable foods to Saturday and Sunday Masses between January 27th and February 4th (2) Support by donating money during a Mass collection (3) Volunteer at a Food Pantry near you and 4) Tell your legislators we must feed children at risk of hunger by using Bread for the World at bread.org/write-congress. Pick up a flyer with Feeding Our Neighbors information and food list at the church entrance.

NOTICIAS PARROQUIALES

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos; ¿Has notado el gran rosetón?

Rev Dangelo Jimenez.

FRANCIS@FIVE: Assessing the Legacy of Pope Francis Five Years After His Election January 31, 2018 | 6 p.m. 12th-Floor Lounge | Fordham University 113 West 60th Street | New York City From the moment of his election on March 13, 2013, Pope Francis has surprised, and often shocked, the Catholic world. Not only was he the first Jesuit to be elected pope, the first from Latin America, and the first to take the name Francis, but he has resolutely pushed the Church to adopt a more pastoral mode of ministry that emphasizes discernment over rules, and privileges mercy as the chief doctrine. As we approach the fifth anniversary of this historic pontificate, a leading Catholic theologian and a leading Catholic journalist who have taken contrasting views of Francis engage in a public debate over his impact.
