The Meaning of “Fear of the Lord”
Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who walk in His ways. Notice that when Scripture speaks of the fear of the Lord is does not leave the phrase in isolation, as if it were a complete summary of faith. No, many things are added to it, or are presupposed by it. From these we may learn its meaning and excellence. In the Book of Proverbs Solomon tell us: If you cry out for wisdom and raise your voice for understanding, if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord. We see here the difficult journey we must undertake before we can arrive at the fear of the Lord.
We must begin by crying out for wisdom. We must hand over to our intellect the duty of making every decision. We must look for wisdom and search for it. There we must understand the fear of the Lord.
“Fear” is not to be taken in the sense that common usage gives it. Fear in this ordinary sense is the trepidation our weak humanity feels when it is afraid of suffering something it does not want to happen. We are afraid, or are made afraid, because of a guilty conscience, the rights of someone more powerful, an attack from one who is stronger, sickness, encountering a wild beats, suffering evil in any form. This kind of fear is not taught: it happens because we are weak. We do not have to learn what we should fear: objects of fear bring their own terror with them.
But of the fear of the Lord this is what is written: Come, my children, listen to me, I shall teach you the fear of the Lord. The fear of the Lord has then to be learned because it can be taught. It does not lie in terror, but in something that can be taught. It does not arise from fearfulness of our nature; it has to be acquired by obedience to the commandments, by holiness of life and by knowledge of the truth.
For us the fear of God (an awesome respect) consists wholly in love, and perfect love of God brings our fear of Him to its perfection. Our love for God is entrusted with its own responsibility: to observe His counsels, to obey His laws, to trust His promises. Let us hear what Scripture says: And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you except to fear the Lord your God and walk in all His ways and love Him and keep His commandments with your whole heart and your whole soul, so that it may be well for you?
The ways of the Lord are many, though He is Himself the way. When He speaks of Himself, He calls Himself the Way and shows us the reason why He called Himself the Way: No one can come to the Father except through Me.
We must ask for these may ways, we must travel along these many ways, to find the one that is good, That is, we shall find the one way of eternal life through the guidance of many teachers. These ways are found in the law, in the prophets, in the Gospels, in the writing of the Apostles, in the different good works by which we fulfill the commandments. Blesses are those who walk these ways in the “fear” (an overwhelming respect) of the Lord. From a treatise on the Psalms by Saint Hilary, bishop +368

Saint Faustina heard these words from Jesus:
“My daughter, My pleasure and delight, nothing will stop Me from granting you graces. Your misery does not hinder My mercy. My daughter, write that the greater the misery of a soul, the greater its right to My mercy; urge all souls to trust in the unfathomable abyss of My mercy, because I want to save them all. On the cross, the fountain of My mercy was opened wide by the lance for all souls – no one have I excluded!” (Diary 1182)

From the desk of your Pastoral Associate – Week of March 8th
Religious Education – We have classes after Mass today. We will not meet on March 22nd, the Sunday beginning Spring Break but we WILL meet on Sunday, March 29th at the end of Spring Break Week.
Envelopes and Lent Countdown – Parents, don’t forget to have your children and youth use their new envelopes. I am also hoping you are taking advantage of the Lenten materials I gave to you on Feb. 23rd.
Youth Group – Because Spring Break starts next week, our youth group WILL meet this Sunday at 6:00 PM and NOT next Sunday, the 22nd.
Holy Hour and Monthly Prayer Group Combined – Our monthly prayer group will meet tomorrow, March 16th, at 6:00 PM as usual but we will spend the first half hour in silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament and then at 6:30PM we will pray our usual rosary for the conversion of souls. We encourage all to join us. We had 8 people at Holy Hour on March 9th.
Bible Study – All are invited to the third session of our Bible Study on Salvation. You do not have to have come to the first two in order to attend this one. If you came to the first session and experienced issues with our speakers, those technical difficulties have been corrected. Of course, you can also watch these series in your own home on FORMED. The Monday session is at 10 AM; the Wednesday session is at 6:30 PM.
Stations of the Cross – This week’s Stations will be led by the Women’s Club at 6:00 PM followed by our usual soup and bread supper. Last week we had 53 people participate in the Stations very capably led by our Religious Education children.
Hospitality Team – We had a great meeting on Monday this week. There are several things I would like to share with you. 1) In light of the current situation with trying to stop the spread of the corona virus, we are asking that all goodies brought for refreshments after Saturday and Sunday Masses be store- bought and not homemade. Our team is also purchasing more tongs to pick up the desserts without using our hands. This also means that we will NOT be asking you to bring desserts for post Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday fellowship. We will be purchasing cakes and cookies from our Hospitality funds. 2) We also talked about the need to help new parishioners get to know members of the parish. To that end we are looking at perhaps doing a Progressive Dinner event in the summer. Stay tuned on that. 3) There was a general discussion about making sure new parishioners who don’t know very many people are made to feel welcomed at fellowship after Mass. We are asking that all of us look around when we are in the hall and, if you see someone you don’t know sitting alone at a table, PLEASE!!!! invite them to sit with you or go and be with them. – Nancy Ellis
