Third Sunday of Lent “HERE I AM”

The scriptures for this Sunday focus our attention on the Lenten call to conversion. When God calls Moses by name in the reading from Exodus, Moses immediately re-sponds, “Here I am!” and comes closer. He answers God’s call even though he is afraid and confused. In a similar way Christ calls each of us by name, especially in the sacraments of baptism and the Eucharist. During the season of Lent he desires above all that we will answer, “Here I am!” and come closer to him. It is all right if we are confused or afraid. It’s even all right if we haven’t really listened for his call yet this Lent. Today’s scriptures give us a second chance to listen for Jesus’ call, to come closer to his voice, and to move farther away from sin in our lives.

BEARING FRUIT How can we tell when we are responding to Jesus’

call? For that we look to the metaphor of the fig tree in to-day’s Gospel parable. Through the sacraments, the scrip-tures, and the Christian community, Jesus Christ—the gar-dener—has been cultivating the ground around us and fer-tilizing us in the hope that we will bear good fruit. Will we? Are we barren because our root system doesn’t grow deep enough to tap into real spiritual nourishment? Is our growth stunted by choices we are making? Is our energy channeled into our healthy, flowering branches, or sapped by a hun-dred scrawny shoots? Do we turn in on ourselves and pre-vent the light of the Son from ripening what little fruit we bear? While the elect who are preparing for baptism scruti-nize their lives to discover how Christ is calling them to conversion, all of us must scrutinize our lives as well. Those who are listening for Jesus’ call and turning to the sound of his voice will bear succulent fruit so the hungry can eat their fill. HOLY NAME SCHOOL Dear Holy Name Family, There is much fun and excitement in and out of the class-room these days. Both teachers and students are filled with the joy, enthusiasm, and accomplishments of learning. Last week seven of our teachers went to a wonderful science workshop sponsored by one of the publishing companies. There was a great speaker followed by sessions with fun examples of hands on experiences at different grade levels. The teachers enjoyed this opportunity and are looking for-ward to more fun with science. In addition, for another great experience, if you are in the school building during the next few weeks, be sure to check out the great projects in front of the 6th grade classrooms. The 6th grade students have recently completed their first model-making project of the year. Students were allowed to pick any building from the first half of the history book. There are may fine examples of ancient Egyptian and Meso-potamian sites that have been created by the students. There are Ziggurat ruins and Sumerian houses from Meso-potamia, an Ishtar Gate from Babylonia, and of course, a number of great examples of pyramids and the Sphinx. Later this year they will complete another round of models, which will include buildings from ancient China, Israel, Greece, and Rome.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED Assembly member Fiona Ma, has become co-sponsor of AB374, a bill which would legalize physician assisted suicide in California.

This legislation proposes that a doctor be permitted to prescribe a lethal overdose of drugs to a patient deemed “terminal” for the sole purpose of allowing him or her to commit suicide. In doing this, the bill does not strive to create a compassionate society but rather a society where the value of life is measured using a utilitarian standard. It victimizes our poorest, weakest and most vulnerable mem-bers of society, those who are most in need of pastoral care.

As Archbishop Niederauer stated in his letter to Assembly member Ma, “physician-assisted suicide is bad public policy. It turns doctors away from their healing vocation and puts into jeopardy those living with disabilities and chronic dis-eases. In a state where 7.5 million are uninsured, it is the poor who will be at risk when killing becomes cheaper than curing. When our state is experiencing a crisis in access to affordable health insurance, it is wrong for the Assembly’s time, energy and resources to be channeled in an effort to allow physician-assisted suicide. Assisted suicide is not among the serious health care challenges facing Califor-nians.

The Archbishop’s letter is the beginning of our campaign to respectfully request that Assembly member Ma change her position on this important issue. I would ask you to do this.

Please write Assembly member Ma using the draft provided to ask for a change of position. Writing a personal hand-written note is actually more effective if you wish. Or you may call the Capitol office at 916-319-2012 or the District office at 415-557-2312.
