REFLECTION ON THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

The question that Jesus puts to the Samaritan woman: “Give me a drink” (Jn 4: 7), is presented to us in the Liturgy of the Third Sunday; it ex-presses the passion of God for every man and woman and wishes to awaken in our hearts the desire for the gift of “a spring of water within, welling up for eternal life” (Jn 4: 14): this is the gift of the Holy Spirit, who transforms Christians in-to “true worshipers”, capable of praying to the Father “in spirit and truth” (Jn 4: 23). Only this water can extinguish our thirst for g o o d n e s s , truth and beauty! Only this water, given to us by the Son, can irrigate the deserts of our restless and unsatisfied soul, until it “finds rest in God”, the famous words of St. Augustine.

Jesus is “the gift of God” and the source of “the living water”. As we journey to Easter and the renewal of our Baptismal Promises we will be sprinkled with this living water. Like the Samaritan woman, Jesus plumbs the secrets of our hearts as we too acknowledge him truly as “the savior of the world”.

Our Parish Mission: By the grace of God, we, the people of the Roman Catholic Parish of Saint Frances Cabrini, firmly rooted in the Apostolic Tradition of the Church and the Holy Scriptures, are

called to continue the mission of Jesus Christ to build up the Kingdom of God in the world through our faithful living according to His teachings, our proclamation of the Gospel by word and deed, and the

worship of God in our private prayer as well as in our public celebration of the Sacraments. We have the strength for everything through Him who empowers us!

DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL LIVE IN FAITH GIVE IN LOVE

The theme of this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) challenges us to live the Lenten discipline of almsgiving by sharing our faith, commitment and generosity. The theme speaks of the two theological virtues of faith and charity. They describe how we should live and how we are called to share the blessings we have received. By making a Lenten sacrificial offering you are helping the Diocese in its mission of service to the people of Brooklyn and Queens and your Parish. For all money over our goal comes back to us for our work and mission as a Parish. Our goal for this year’s ACA is $26,349.00. If you are on the ACA mailing list you will receive your pledge through the mail as they have begun the General Gift Phase. The In-Pew Weekends will serve as an opportunity for all parishioners who have not yet made a commitment to participate in the Appeal. The In-Pew Weekends are the next two weekends: March 25th/26th & April 1st/2nd. Please consider making a pledge to this Appeal. When we satisfy the goal of the Diocese all money will then come back to the parish and go into our building fund. This is another way to fund raise and contribute to our goal of building our Church.

LENTEN MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS (PART TWO)

Pope Francis continues his reflection on the Parable of Lazarus & the rich man by challenging us to open our eyes to welcome and love life especially in the weak and the vulnerable. He reflected on the life of the beggar Lazarus and now tells us about the rich man.

2. Sin blinds us

The parable is unsparing in its description of contradictions associated with the rich man. Unlike poor Laza-rus, he does not have a name; he is simply called “a rich man”. His opulence was seen in his extravagant and expensive robes. Purple cloth was even more precious than silver and gold, and was thus reserved to divini-ties (cf. Jer 10:9) and kings (cf, Jg 8:26), while fine linen gave one an almost sacred character. The man was clearly ostentatious about his wealth, and in the habit of displaying it daily: “He feasted sumptuously every day”. In him we catch a dramatic glimpse of the corruption of sin, which progresses in three successive stages: love of money, vanity and pride (cf. Homily, 20 September 2013).

The Apostle Paul tells us that “the love of money is the root of all evils” (cf. 1 Tim 6:10). It is the main course of corruption and a source of envy, strife and suspicion. Money can come to dominate us, even to the point of becoming a tyrannical idol (cf. Evangelii Gaudium, 55). Instead of being an instrument at our service for doing good and showing solidarity towards others, money can chain us and the entire world to a selfish logic that leaves no room for love and hinders peace. The parable then shows that the rich man’s greed makes him vain. His personality finds expression in appearances, in showing others what he can do. But his appearance masks an interior emptiness. His life is a prisoner to outward appearances, to the most superficial and fleet-ing aspects of existence (cf. Evangelii Gaudium, 62). The lowest rung of this moral degradation is pride. The rich man dresses like a king and acts like a god, forgetting that he is merely mortal. For those corrupted by love of riches, nothing exists beyond their own ego. Those around them do not come into their line of sight. The re-sult of attachment to money is a sort of blindness. The rich man does not see the poor man who is starving, hurting, lying at his door. Looking at this character, we can understand why the Gospel so bluntly condemns the love of money: “No one can be a slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or be attached to the first and despise the second. You cannot be a slave both of God and of money” (Mt 6:24).

T RIBUTE TO ST. JOSEPH: O glorious St. Joseph, you were chosen by God to be the foster father of Jesus, the most pure spouse of Mary ever Virgin and the head of the Holy Family. You are cho-

sen as the heavenly patron and protector of the Church. It is with great confidence that I implore your powerful assistance for the whole Church on earth. Protect in a special manner all who labor for souls amid the trials and tribulations of this life and grant that all peoples of the world may follow Christ and the Church.

D ear St. Joseph, accept the offering of myself which I now make to you. I dedicate myself to your service, that you may ever be my father, my protector and my guide in the way of salvation. Ob-

tain for me great purity of heart and a fervent love for the spiritual life. May all my actions, after your example, be directed to the greater glory of God, in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus, the Immacu-

late Heart of Mary and your own Paternal Heart. Pray for us, O Holy St. Joseph. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
