Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time — June 30, 2019
“When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, ‘Lord, do
you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?’
Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village.”
The heated reaction of James and John in today’s Gospel shows that they had not
yet mastered this teaching of Jesus: “Learn from me, because I am gentle and humble of spirit.” Perhaps we may ask, “When was one time I responded hatefully to hateful treatment by another? How do I deal with such treatment now?” We should know that when we hate our enemies, we give them
power over us---power over our sleep, power over our health, power over our peace of mind. Our enemies would dance for joy if they knew how our hatred was killing us but not hurting them in the least.
We want your input
Soon, with the new fiscal year to begin for our parishes, we will be inserting in the bulletin a six-month summary of our parish finances, the general categories of income and expenses. If you
desire more information, please ask me or Julie, our business manager, and we will gladly e-mail you a more detailed compilation of parish finances. What I do ask is that you look carefully at the infor-mation and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, Julie, or your parish council/finance council
members. Its your money, so we want your feedback. Know that with the declining demographics in our parishes and the current slump in the farm economy, we will have to make some tough financial decisions and we ask for your un-derstanding and support. In some regards, we are living beyond our means and there has to be a corrective measure,
with the future well being of our parishes in mind as well. May God bless you for your generous support of your home parish in the forms of time, talent, and treasure. I am most grateful! I guess to save some funds in regards to the pastor’s groceries, he could come to more homes for some dough dishes or some of the fresh walleye caught this
summer. Of course, it’s all for the parish budget . . . no personal gain at all. [Note to self: bring along Tupperware for those extra helpings to take back to the rectory].
Thank you for your kindness
Thank you to everyone for the prayers, best wishes, cards, foods, libations, and pecuniary gifts for my 48th birthday and my 20th Anniversary of priestly ordination. I am truly grateful for your kindness, chari-
ty, and generosity. May God reward you! I guess I am officially entering the old priest curmudgeon stage, so don’t be offended if I snap at you for not having enough caramel on the caramel rolls you bring to the rectory (hint, hint).

Our Age Needs Wisdom
8. The whole church is obliged to a deep reflection and commitment, so that the new culture now emerging may be
evangelized in the depth, true values acknowledged, the rights of men and women defended, and justice promoted in
the very structures of society. In this way, the “new humanism” will not distract people away from their relationship
with God, but will lead them to it more fully.
Science and technical applications offer new and immense possibilities in the construction of such humanism. Still, as
a consequence, of political choices that decide the direction of research and its applications, science is often used against its original purpose, which is the advancement of the human person.

And the two shall become one
We offer our prayers and congratulations to Sarah (Wandler) & Joe Christensen, who
were married last Saturday at Saint Mary’s Church of New England. May God bless our newly married couple
with the great love and happiness that flows from the ho-ly Sacrament of Matrimony. Be assured of our prayers for you all the days of your married life. [I hope the bride remembers the time-honored tradition of her home par-
ish, where all the leftover wedding cake goes to the pas-tor. Don’t you just love tradition, especially in all forms chocolate!]

A point to ponder
No one is too broken for the healing power of
Christ’s grace.
The Saint of the Week, Saint Thomas More (1478-1535)
Feast day: June 22nd
Patron of: adopted children, lawyers, civil servants, politicians, and difficult marriages
Saint Thomas More was born in London in 1478 into a wealthy and politically connect-
ed family; his father was close advisor to King Edward IV. Saint Thomas attended the best
schools in London and was accepted into the prestigious Oxford School of Law, where he ex-
celled in his studies. Upon graduation, he had a number of offers to practice as a lawyer in Lon-
don and its environs, but he was still unsure about his calling. For some time, he considered be-
coming a Carthusian monk, the strictest monastic order in the life of the Church. He loved their life of simple piety
and often joined them for their spiritual exercises. But God called him into the secular world, where he married and
began to practice law.
Saint Thomas married Jane Colt in 1505 and they were blessed with a happy marriage and four children. Sad-
ly, Jane died in 1511 and Saint Thomas married Alice Harpur, a widow, who brought two children into the marriage;
they would have no children together. Alice is reported to have had a less than an “effervescent personality” and
Saint Thomas’ friends pitied the sad state of his second marriage, but Saint Thomas was committed to his marriage
vows and by God’s grace, loved his wife unconditionally.
Saint Thomas was elected to Parliament and he earned a reputation as an honest and effective politician. King
Henry VIII took a liking to Saint Thomas and gave him posts of ever-increasing responsibility. In time, he became
Lord Chancellor, the king’s most trusted advisor. He was an effective servant to the king and was fiercely loyal as
well. However, things would become difficult in 1530, when King Henry VIII worked to obtain an annulment from
his wife, Catherine of Aragon. Saint Thomas refused to sign the letter to the Pope, requesting the annulment. King
Henry VIII was livid at this act of disobedience. The relationship became more tense when King Henry VIII purged
the clergy who opposed his marriage to Anne Boylen. Then, the king named himself the head of the Church of Eng-
land and cut off all ties with the Papacy. Saint Thomas could not reconcile with this break from Rome and resigned
his position as chancellor to the king. King Henry VIII accepted the resignation, but he was offended deeply by this
act of disloyalty.
Matters came to a head when Saint Thomas refused to attend the coronation of Anne Boylen as Queen of Eng-
land. This greatly offended King Henry VIII, who viewed this act of defiance as an insult to his queen and to his au-
thority as head of church and state. Shortly afterwards, Saint Thomas was charged with treason, was arrested, and
was imprisoned in the Tower of London. At his trial, he was convicted by a court that included Anne Boylen’s own
father, brother, and uncle . . . hardly an impartial jury. The court sentenced him to be hanged, drawn and quartered,
the traditional punishment for treason. As a final act of “mercy”, King Henry VIII commuted Saint Thomas’ punish-
ment to mere decapitation.
Saint Thomas ascended the scaffold on July 6th, 1535, joking to the executioners to help him up the scaffold,
but that he would see himself down. He then made a final statement, “I am the king’s good servant, but God’s first.”
Following his death, it was revealed that Saint Thomas wore a hair shirt, a garment made from camel hair, designed
to be itchy and worn as a sign of atonement and repentance. It became obvious to all that he was a man of deep piety,
self-discipline, and penitence. To all people, he is a reminder that we are not citizens of earth. In the words, of Saint
Paul, “Our true citizenship is in heaven.”
On the lighter side
A young Catholic woman brought her fiancé to meet her parents. The father invited the young man to his study for a talk. “So, what
are your plans?”, the father asked. “I’m a Scripture scholar”, the groom-to-be replied. “A Scripture scholar? Hmm”, the father said. “I will study”, the young man replied, “And God will provide.” “And how will you buy her a home such as she deserves?”, asked the father. “I will
concentrate on my studies,” the young man replied, “And God will provide.” “And children?”, asked the father. “How will you support chil-dren?” “Don’t worry sir, God will provide.” Later, the girl’s mother asked her husband how the talk went. The father answered, “He has no
job, no plans, no prospects. But the good news is that he thinks I’m God.”
