God is so immeasurable, so mysterious, that we humans can only manage to contemplate God’s infinite qualities a few at a time. Today’s majestic feast savors three of God’s characteris-tics: power, eternity, and truth. The prophet Daniel relates a vision of God giving the Son of Man power over all places and all peoples, at all times. His kingship “shall not be destroyed.” Very few things in our life experience last forever, but we can trust that God’s power will never subside. The book of Revela-tion stresses this everlasting “always‑ness” of God-. Revelation proclaims that God was, is, and is to come—covering all of time. God’s power lasts forever, and, as John’s Gospel relates, so does truth. Jesus says his mission is to “testify to the truth.” He invites us to “belong” to the truth, to listen to his voice and glorify God in that truth.

Today marks the end of our liturgical year. Set aside a few min-utes to reflect on your relationship with Christ, our King. Relax, close your eyes, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide your imagina-tion.

Choose one quality of God shared in today’s readings: power, eternity, or truth. Allow your heart and mind to explore this attribute. Perhaps, like the prophet Daniel, vivid images of God will appear. Maybe the word itself will resonate more and more deeply as you consider it. You might imagine faces of people you know whom God has gifted with that particular quality.

Breathe, and trust the Holy Spirit to show you some-thing about God that will draw you closer to the divine. Con-tinue to meditate like this as long as is comfortable.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Step One: Listen to the Word As you hear this reading from the Passion of Christ, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart?Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: Is it difficult or easy for you to tell the truth? How does Jesus help you? Question for Youth: Today we celebrate Christ the King. How much do you let Jesus' truth rule your life? How difficult is it for you to follow Jesus?

Lunes: Ap 14:1-3, 4b-5; Sal 24 (23):1bc-4ab, 5-6; Lc 21:1-4 Martes: Ap 14:14-19; Sal 96 (95):10-13; Lc 21:5-11 Miércoles: Ap 15:1-4; Sal 98 (97):1-3ab, 7-9; Lc 21:12-19 Jueves: Ap 18:1-2, 21-23; 19:1-3, 9a; Sal 100 (99):1b-5; Lc 21:20-28 Viernes: Rom 10:9-18; Sal 19 (18):8-11; Mt 4:18-22 Sábado: Ap 22:1-7; Sal 95 (94):1-7ab; Lc 21:34-36 Domingo: Jer 33:14-16; Sal 25 (24):4-5, 8-10, 14; 1 Tes 3:12 4:2; Lc 21:25-28, 34-36

CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we cele-brate the feast of Christ the King. It’s easy to understand today’s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus’ words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are pro-claiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he “has made us into a kingdom” (Revelation 1:6)—one people united in love and peace for all eternity.

IMAGINATIVE SERVICE When you are ready to draw your few minutes of imaginative prayer to a close, ask God how you might serve Christ the King better in daily life. Challenge yourself to remain quiet and still while you wait to receive God’s response.

Here are some questions that might inspire your con-versation with the Lord.

Power • In what ways do I have power over others? How responsi-

bly do I use that power? • Which people or situations make me feel powerless? How

can I feel closer to you, Lord, in those moments? • What can I do, Lord, to bring your power to the people and

places I see every day? Eternity

• How do I react when good relationships or experiences come to an end?

• How do I endure unpleasant situations that seem to last forever?

• What can I do, Lord, to bring your everlasting life into the things I must do each day?

Truth • How important to me is telling the truth? • How would I speak or act differently if you, Lord, were

standing visibly by my side each day? • What can I do, Lord, to testify to others that I believe in

you?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Although our Puritan forebears at Plymouth Rock were almost a hundred years removed from their Catholic roots, the old liturgical calendar still had an unconscious claim on their hearts. We’ve already seen how on Saint Martin’s Day, Novem-ber 11, medieval continental Europe observed a great harvest day of Thanksgiving, with games, dances, parades, and a festive din-ner of roast goose. With the goose went ample draughts of “Saint Martin’s Wine,” the first wine of the new harvest. Martinmas celebrated full barns and larders stocked for the winter. Even after the Reformation, the tradition of eating goose on Saint Mar-tin’s Day was retained in Holland, and it was there that our Pil-grims encountered this tradition. When Governor Bradford sent four hunters out into the Massachusetts wilderness in the autumn of 1621, they did indeed find some geese and ducks, and were persuaded by the indigenous people to try turkey, too. Just as the liturgical calendar has been tweaked over the years, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the third Thursday in November in 1939, probably to extend the Christ-mas shopping season. The protest was so great that in 1941 the day established by President Lincoln, the last Thursday in No-vember, was restored. If the Pilgrims had known of the Martin-mas connection, they might never have celebrated at all!

ALTAR SERVER MEETING

There will be on-going altar server training for new and current altar servers starting in December. The first training will be held Wednes-day, December 5th from 6:00pm to 7:30pm in the Church. The training is mandatory. If you have any questions or if your child is unable to attend, please leave a voice mail mes-sage for Christina May at the Religious Education Office (562) 921-5179. You may also send an email to [email protected].

DID YOU KNOW? Boundaries are really important. Boundaries are critical, for you and for the children in your care. Establishing and maintaining boundaries helps teach children their importance, gives them the

tools to establish their own, and to form appropriate and healthy relationships with other adults. You can avoid even a miscon-ception of inappropriate behavior by upholding the boundaries you have established for yourself, allowing you more freedom to care for the children in your life.

Many lives depend on us advocating for them!

Attn: Spiritual Parents/Brothers & Sisters!!

Please continue to pray! The babies are counting on us! ~ Remember to pray daily for your spiritually adopted child and his/her parents. During your earthly life, this spiritu-ally adopted child of yours is known only to God, but in the world to come, it is hoped that you will meet this child whose life was spared by your prayers and spend eternal happiness with him/her.

Three Months: Your baby is quite active in the womb now although his/her mother will not feel them for another couple of months. If their mother’s womb had a window, you could watch your spiritually adopted baby squint, swallow, and move their tongue and make a tight fist if you touch their palm. Your baby obtains the oxygen their body needs through the umbilical cord and now weighs one ounce. What a miracle they are!
