Mr. and Mrs. Martin and their 4 year oldson James are moving into a newapartment today.
James is very excited as he watches themoving men carry all of their stuff intothe building.
The Martins now live on the third floor.James loves to look out the window at thestreet below and all of the nearby buildings.
He wants to climb onto the window sillfor a better view. Is this safe? Whatcan his parents do to make sure thathe doesn’t hurt himself?
Mrs. Martin asks the owner of the building,Mr. Rivera, to install window guards soJames won’t ever accidentally slip and fall.
James watches his mom and dad unpackthe family photos and hang them in theliving room. James notices something hehas never seen before.
“What’s that?” James asks his father.“That’s a smoke detector,” Mr. Martinexplains. “It will make a loud noise ifthere is a fire here so we can get outsafely.”
James has a room of his own in the newapartment. There is plenty of space forall his toys and books.
Mrs. Martin notices peeling and crackingpaint near the bookshelf. She tellsJames not to touch it. “Paint chips canbe very dangerous for children, James.I’ll call Mr. Rivera to fix this right away.”
James’ grandmother comes for a visit, and the whole family sits down for adelicious lunch.
Later James helps his mother water theplants. “Why don’t you put a lock onthat gate?” his grandmother asks.
“Look,” Mrs. Martin explains. “This gateis safe. It has a special latch instead ofa lock so that we can get out easily, without having to look around for a key.”
James is getting ready to go to his newschool for the first time. “I think Iwant to wear this,” he tells his mother.
Mr. Rivera, the building owner, knockson the door just as they are leaving.
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Martin,” he says.“Today I’m putting a new safe lock onyour apartment door, so that you won’tneed a key to leave.”
The street is very busy today. Many peopleare going to work, and James and his motherare off to school. “I really like our new place.I hope the school is just as nice,” James tellshis mother. “I do, too,’’she says.
