Charles Freer Hulks was born in Slaterville SPrings, TomPkins Counts, New York, and lived much of his life in nearby Ithaca. A descendant of Benoni Hulks an earls settler of the area, Hulks was interested in the histors of TomPkins Count~, and kePt a record of family histories and local events in a series of notebooks and scrapbooks,

(former Harris call #5135 Gl06) newspaper clippings; very general in nature of subject matter; many from the Ithaca Journal. 1902-1903 [The book used was an o l d account book; the entries are, for the most part, covered up; on p. 108 there are two checks dated 1831 & 1833 respectively, drawn on Bank of Ithaca and signed by James Mulks. The book is approximately one -third filled but c lippings are pasted throughout, up to the last page.]

(former Harris cal l #5135 Gl07) newspaper clippings approximately the first third of the volume consists of clippings, primarily from Broome County papers, on the Rulloff case. The balance of the clippings are general in nature, though many concern the history of towns and villages in New York State. 1871-1875

(former Harris call #5135 Gl08) newspaper clippings; very genera l (includes one on Rulloff, politics, his­tory of various localities in N.Y. State and else­where, etc.) 1826-1869 [Near the front of the volume are several pages that

were not used for clippings. They contain a list of Supervisors and Town Clerks for the Town of Caroline 1811-1869; minutes of town (of CaYoline) meetings; some history of the town of Caroline; a list of the officers of Tompkins County 1 81 7-1870.)

(former Harris call #5135 D47) newspaper clippings; manuscript, 1894-1904 [the manuscript material seems to consist of notes, written by Chas. Mulks in 1894, on a variety of sub­jects - where a quotation is cited, he has noted the source; the clippings are almost entirely a col­umn titled "Replies and Decisions" taken from some periodical of commerce and finance (no name appears) probably published in New York City - dates on the column are 1900-1904)
