floor showHere’s a simple idea for a duck cloth rug. Put two panels of fabric together, with wrong sides together. Stitch around edges, leaving an opening to turn. Turn right side out, stitch opening closed, and topstitch edges. Add-ons: anchor appliqué and rope-inspired trim.

Life is but a duck cloth dream in this keep-calm-and-sail-on retreat. We transformed the space with a mix of mellow nautical prints, supported by a handful of bold geometric patterns. Tip: The wall décor is DIY. Just staple duck cloth around artist canvases, and add the embellishments of your choice.

• Patterned fabric (for front of pennants)• White fabric (for back of pennants)• Water-soluble marker• Scissors or rotary cutter• Straight pins• Pinking shears• Bias tape• Thread • Ruler (optional)• Templates (provided)• Cutting mat• Sewing machine

Trace templates (see pages 8-9) onto patterned fabric, and cut out shapes—we combined notched pennants with triangle flags. Repeat with white fabric. Tip: Use ruler as guide for straight lines if using rotary cutter.

Pin patterned fabric to white fabric as shown.

Leaving a ½” border, sew around perimeter of pennant.

Trim all edges with pinking shears, except for the top.

Pin top edge of pennants into crease of bias tape.

Leave room at both ends of tape to hang and tie.
