The map of activities being undertaken across the globeis available by clicking here. As the new financial year approaches, FMA is recommencing a technical series of seminarsaround Australia specifically for members. The first in this series is focused on lighting andillumination. With many members expressing a great deal of interest in the area of LED lightingand lighting controls, this seemed like a logical topic to kick of this new technical series. Remember also to log in to the FMA Australia linkedin group to engage in interesting and topicalconversations about facilities management. Nicholas BurtCEO

Andrew Hudson – Window Energy Solutions What was the driving force behind your decision to become a supporter of FMAAustralia? As a supporter of FMA we will be in more of a position to assist facility managers to understandhow Window Film can be of value to their building. Whether it be to reduce heat or glare andhence increase workers comfort, reduce the load on air conditioners and therefore reduceelectricity usage or for privacy, decoration, safety or security there are film solutions.

How does your work at Window Energy Solutions relate to the facilities managementsector? Over the next five to ten years more and more buildings will be updated to both bring them up to4 or 5 stars. In doing so the Facility Manager will have made their building more attractive, toprospective tenants, current tenants or the owner-occupier. They will look at upgrading lighting,air-conditioning and installing energy management systems. They should also look at window filmas a relatively cheap, easy to install, long lasting (15 years or more) product that can give a R.O.Iof between two to five years whilst at the same time refreshing the external appearance of thebuilding. What are some of the significant projects Window Energy Solutions has been involvedwith? W.E.S. has supplied and installed film on Parliament House in Canberra and two Council offices inTownsville. We have put safety film in 750 schools in Victoria and all of the 2,200 schools in NSW.You can see our work at the Lucient apartment block on St. Kilda Rd, Melbourne opposite ToorakRd. You can also see how window film has transformed and updated the look of 227 Collins St onthe corner of Swanston St. It is expected that the owners of this building will recoup the outlayfor the film within four years directly from energy savings. What does your current role involve on a daily basis? My broad role is to get out the message that window film can be of great benefit especially inlarge buildings. It is one of education and of working with facility managers and owners to findthe best solution for the range of difficulties faced at their particular location. A lot of this is aboutthe type of frames and glass in a building as well as the orientation of the building. We at W.E.S.can model any building with a range of films to demonstrate possible R.O.I. whilst still be mindfulof the overall aesthetics. What do you like most about your work? Meeting a variety of people and being able to assist them to solve issues that in many cases havebeen going on for years without ever being addressed.Do you have any sustainability initiatives in place at your organization and if so,elaborate on those?Obviously, because we are in the Sustainability Industry, we see it as exceptionally important thatW.E.S. is seen to be doing our bit and not just selling to others. We have initiated cardboard andpaper recycling. We have installed new energy saving light bulbs and purchase “green” electricity.W.E.S. also has, of course, window film on all of our windows. In your opinion, what are going to be the big issues facing the facilities industry overthe next five years? Knowing what measures to take to upgrade your building to achieve significant energy savings.Because each building is different in location, orientation age and materials each one requiresdifferent solutions to efficiently (both in time and money) upgrade. With electricity pricesincreasing at an alarming rate is imperative that facility managers move swiftly to position theirbuilding to cope, as well as to compete favorably with other buildings in a the marketplace. Finally, as a supporting member, what are you looking forward to most in terms of youraffiliation with FMA Australia? Hopefully being able to meet as many members as possible and be given the opportunity to showhow W.E.S. can assist in making their building more sustainable.

Hazel Lawrence

Hazel Lawrence - InterfaceFLOR When and why did you join FMA Australia? I have been a FMA member previously attending functions including social, site visits andeducational for over 10 years. I have always found FMA functions a great form of networkingwith clients and my peers. As I have recently joined InterfaceFLOR it was a great opportunity torejoin FMA. How does your work at InterfaceFLOR tie in with facilities management? My role at InterfaceFLOR focuses on B2B relationships with Facilities Managers and end userclients. Working at InterfaceFLOR allows me to work closely with Facility Managers and supportthem in all aspects of procurement, churn and maintenance of carpeting, including greenpurchasing and ways to reduce costs for refurbishments by up to 50% (while occupied). What does your current role involve on a daily basis? InterfaceFLOR has been manufacturing carpet and supporting the needs of commercialbusinessesin Australia for 40 years. Their expertise and leadership allows me to add real valueto my client’sday to day activities. This involves assisting with budgeting, procurement, quoting and workingwith the contractor to help deliver the completed installation. With new builds, one of my key focuses is working with Facilities Managers to help writedesignbriefs with the mantra ‘maximise the first life of product’ in mind. Imagination andingenuity isapplied to the design brief so that the Architect or Interior Designer can respond withthe mostsustainable solution. More and more Facility Managers are requesting modular carpettiles to be selected in the first place, rather than conventional broadloom carpet, due to carpettilesdesign, as well as environmental credentials. The goal is to reduce the demand and need fornewproducts as well as the waste-to-landfill impact of companies. What do you like most about your work? The most rewarding part of my role is working from conceptual ideas, to budgets, proposals, quotes, delivery, installation, service, and seeing the final result come to fruition. I enjoy buildingand strengthening relationships throughout the Industry. Can you tell us something about InterfaceFLOR? As mentioned previously, InterfaceFLOR is Australia's leading manufacturer of modular carpettiles, producing locally for 40 years. From the way we design products and processes, to theinvolvement we have in promoting environmental stewardship in the wider community, sustainability is the guiding principle and philosophy for our company. We take responsibility forthe full life cycle impact of everything we do and work in partnership with suppliers andcustomers to minimise this impact. This leadership was recently recognised by both the NSWBusiness Chamber Awards and NSW Government’s Green Globe Awards. Do you have any sustainability initiatives in place at your organisation? Yes, for InterfaceFLOR design took on a whole new meaning in 1994, when the late Ray Andersonfounder of Interface had an epiphany he described as “a spear in the chest” which altered thedirection of the company forever. He set out to change InterfaceFLOR from a petroleum intensive

industrial organisation to one driven by Mission Zero a promise toeliminate any negative impact it may have on the environment by 2020. As a result of thisthinking, we are always looking for ways to improve our products while reducing their impact onthe environment. We use life cycle analysis to measure the impact of every product we designand in 2012 our products will carry Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Similar to hownutrition labels help consumers compare the health benefits of food items, EPDs detail where allof the materials come from, as well as their environmental impacts across a product’s life cycle. This will be an Australian first for carpet tiles. What are some of the significant projects the company has been involved with? 1 Bligh Street, Darling Walk, 20 Bond Street, 420 George Street, NAB House and 1 Martin Placejust to name a few. Even our own office is an example of leadership and excellence, being thefirst heritage listed building in NSW to achieve a 5 Star Greenstar Office Interiors v.1 rating. In your opinion, what are going to be the big issues facing the facilities industry overthe next five years? I think a growing problem is the lack of regulation around green claims on products. Everyonewants to be seen to be green, but making a confident green product choice is challenging. That’sone of the reasons InterfaceFLOR is introducing EPDs for all their products. By fully understandingthe environmental impacts of a product, Facility Mangers will be able to see which marketing-based green claims are supported by facts and which are not. An EPD provides the information tohelp make more informed choices, like choosing a product based upon the amount of recycledcontent, ozone depletion or energy usage. Finally, as a new member of FMA Australia, what are you looking forward to most interms of your membership? Joining FMA again will allow me opportunities to further develop my relationships within theindustry whilst sharing some my industry knowledge. I am really looking forward to attending thewell organised lunches, site visits in a relaxed and professional environment.
