A debate starts with a statement and two opposing parties. In a debate, it is not enough to only give your opinion on the statement. You need to substantiate with good arguments and refute the arguments used by your opponents. You should try to state your supporting arguments and persuade the audience the best you can. A debate is a ‘battle’ with words. Below, you will find three themes with regards to the environment.

You can also come up with short, to the point statements, or your own theorem!

TIP:

➊ Your parents can be the judges.➋ Convince the jury of your argument. ➌ Listen carefully to each other and find loopholes in your opponent’s arguments. ➍ Change sides; so, after debating from one point of view for 5 minutes, take the other side and see if you can convince the jury this time as well.

A simple definition of culture is: the way a group of people interact. You can have a home culture, a school culture and of course a country’s culture. A country’s culture is made up of everything people think, do and have, their habit and customs, religion, values and beliefs, ways of living, music, objects, eating habits, dress code and what their houses and buildings look like.

DISCUSS WITH YOUR (GRAND)PARENTS AND WRITE DOWN THE ANSWERS:

Is it important that people know their own cultural background?

To what extent does culture influence what people think and feel?

Can someone belong to multiple cultures at the same time?

Does everyone belong to a certain culture?

How do people get to understand about their culture?

How could people lose parts of their culture?

How many different cultures are you currently surrounded by?

Burj Khalifa, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

This skyscraper is located in the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Its height is 828 meters and it is currently the tallest building in the world. The building is named after the ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates, Mr. Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. To give you a feeling of how massive this building is, the total weight of the aluminium used on Burj Khalifa is equivalent to that of five A380 aircrafts. The tower has the highest outdoor observation deck in the world and its elevator has the longest travel distance in the world.

Taipei 101, Taipei, Taiwan

Taipei 101 is a 508-meter skyscraper in the Taiwanese capital of Taipei. The tower was the world's tallest building until 2007, after which the Burj Khalifa surpassed it. The elevators in Taipei 101 are among the fastest in the world, with a record speed of 60 mph. The most remarkable feature is the huge spherical shape, weighing 800 tons, in the pinnacle of the building, which countermoves when there are vibrations. The weight of the sphere takes on a portion of the kinetic energy (movement) of the building, in the event of vibrations, for example in storms or earthquakes.

World Financial Center, Shanghai, China

The Shanghai World Financial Center is a building in Shanghai and is 492 meters high. An architectural highlight of the tower is the large 'hole'at the top. Above this hole is an observation platform that you can reach via an elevator, which is accessible through an entrance on the outside of the building.

The building was designed by Cesar Pelli, a renowned architect and in 2004, the Petronas Twin Towers went on to win the Aga Khan prize for their special architectural style.

International Commerce Centre, Hong Kong

The International Commerce Centre, also known as the ICC in Hong Kong, has a height of 484 meters. In the ICC you will find office space, the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and Sky 100, an observation deck on the 100th floor. The hotel has both a bar and a swimming pool located on the 118th floor, which are the highest bar and the highest pool in the world, at 484 meters.

Abraj Al Bait – Tower, Mecca, Saudi Arabia

In the city of Mecca, you will find the Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower. The complex consists of several buildings, of which the tallest measures 601 meters. It features a car park, a large shopping mall, a five-star hotel, residential towers and helicopter decks. A total of about 100,000 people can stay in the towers. The construction is home to the world's largest clock face and the biggest belfry in the world. Incidentally, it also happens to be the most expensive building in the world. Each of the four clocks, (one on each side of the building), is illuminated by two million led lights. Annually, millions of Muslims visit Mecca to perform their pilgrimage called Hajj.

Let me ‘edutain’ you!

Introduction

My name is Petra. I’m from the Netherlands and my professional background lies in Graphic Design.

The inspiration for My Edutainment Book came from my son, Benjamin. Whilst on an extended road trip, the back seat of the car was littered with many different types of children’s books. He suggested that, instead of bringing along so many different books, it would be much handier to only bring one book. One book, that would encompass various aspects of reading, learning, entertainment, games and fun, and thus, the idea of My Edutainment Book was born.

My book is meant for children to bond with family and friends in joint activities. It is mainly aimed at children between 8 and 12 years old, but can of course be used by children of all ages! It includes many thought provoking questions, provides meaningful information, stimulates drawings and teaches new games. Students from Dulwich College (Singapore) and the Hollandse School in Singapore wrote beautiful short stories for this book, encouraging children to read and learn about other countries and cultures.

I wrote and created the book, to inspire children to read, be active and inquisitive. The book covers a wide range of learning topics, enticing children to actively have fun and to start conversations with others. I hope to encourage creativity in children, showing them there is much fun to be had without being glued to a screen.

Hope to hear from you!

xoxo Petra♥
