Yoga/Pilates ComboAdults 18+

Yoga enhances your inner self by focusing on increasing strength, balance and flexibility using nostril breath to warm and relax thebody. Pilates breathing is a forceful mouth exhalation and a pas-sive nostril inhalation (a natural response to the exhalation). Pilates trains the body from the core outward. This dynamic con-cept of training is consistent with the way we live and move.Everything we do, from putting away groceries to moving furnitureto shoveling snow, requires that we actively stabilize from the corein order to effectively use our extremities as we perform work andmovement. In order to safely and effectively use the strength ofour “movers,” the arms and legs, we must strengthen the stabiliz-ers of our core. To do so we center the body by stabilizing the pelvisand training muscles to be both movers and stabilizers. Posture isimproved and the spine becomes better aligned. Muscles becomebalanced and fluidity and grace are achieved. This form of exercise is gentle, yet challenging. The exercises are pro-gressive and can be modified to each individual’s needs and ability. Exercises are performed on a Yoga mat, using a variety of posi-tions, standing, seated, supine, prone, kneeling, and side lying.

Adult Hearing Loss and Hearing AidsWhat You and Your Family Need to KnowThe Franklin Recreation Department invites adults with hearingloss and their family members to attend this informative presenta-tion presented by Darrel Feakes, Au.D, Doctor of Audiology. Dr.Feakes has retired from audiology after thirty-five years of provid-ing public education programs and service to the hearing impairedand their families in hospitals and ENT offices. Dr. Feakes, himself, has a significant hearing loss and is a user of amplification.Hearing loss is commonly associated with the process of aging. Asage advances, so does the incidence and degree of hearing loss. Most untreated hearing loss adversely affects all aspects of familyand social interaction as well as the physical and mental health ofthe individual and family members. Over ninety-five percent of agerelated hearing loss cannot be treated medically or surgically.Amplification can be of significant benefit for these individuals andtheir family members. Unfortunately, approximately seventy per-cent of the people who could benefit from using amplification donot do so. Price is often given as the reason. However, in countrieswhere hearing aids are provided free, over half of the populationwho could use aids do not. This would suggest there are other rea-sons why hearing aids are not accepted. Dr. Feakes’ experience hasstrongly indicated the lack of public education is one of the keyreasons amplification is not accepted. Some of the topics Dr. Feakes will discuss are:• Why hearing aids are not widely accepted.• Health issues associated with an untreated hearing loss.• What aids can and cannot do.• Importance of having realistic expectations, and family support.• When the use of amplification should be considered.• How to become accustomed to using amplification• How the use of Communication Strategies will improve

communication.Questions are welcomed. People with Parkinson’s disease (PD) who exercise on a regularbasis have better balance than those who don’t. In water, the fearof falling is eliminated due to the water’s buoyancy. The assistanceof buoyancy allows for bigger movements. Participants can exercisewith more exaggerated movements while the force of resistancechallenges balance and coordination. Over time, water aerobics willallow people with PD feel freer on land. People who have difficultywalking and exercising on land find that water aerobics boosts theirtolerance for exercise as well as the following benefits:• Increased range of motion• Increased muscle strength and endurance• Increased circulation• Reduced pain and stiffness• Improved social interaction• Decreased depression• Increased posture and motor control• Improved bowel function• Increased confidence

Water aerobics will slow down the progression of PD and enhancethe quality of life while maintaining functional independence.
