WELCOME TO ThIs Is The Week ThaT Is!

I am a big fan of John Oliver, the former Daily Show correspondent who now has his own political humor show on HBO called Last Week Tonight. He begins most of his shows by doing a brief one-line recap of the week, which recently has been something like, “If you haven’t seen the news this week, it’s been f-ing terrible.” And it has been. ISIS, Ebola, police shootings, drone strikes…all pretty terrifying. In fact, I have found it difficult to tune into the news because the onslaught of tragedy after tragedy, crisis after crisis is exhausting and scary.

But when it comes time to do This Is The Week That Is, I can avoid the news no longer. I have to not only tune in, but dig in, do extensive research, watch the 24-hour news cycle and talk to friends and neighbors every day to see what’s out there, what are people talking about. Then I sit down with the cast, crew, staff and design team and we begin to talk about the show and how on earth we can make all of this bad news…funny. And something starts to happen — in looking for the funny, what I find is connection with other people, which makes the news a little less scary. As we build the show, news exhaustion gives way to exhilaration as we take something awful and attempt to make it into something joyful.

The final element to make this alchemy work comes when we start performances and the audience arrives. Being in a room with 100, 200, 300 strangers and laughing together about a shared experience, makes all of this terrifying news feel less terrifying, if even for a moment. And moments like that remind me of what is possible. It may not be the way the world is now, it may not be the status quo — but it is possible.

The world needs more comedy.

Thank you for being here. We wish you a wonderful holiday season full of joyful moments.

From the Artistic Director
