As I travel around the CBD, Larrakeyah and Cullen Bay I’m repeatedly impressed by the passion and vision people have for their community. It’s certainly an honour to represent the people living in Port Darwin. I have been door knocking and manning my mobile booth to hear your concerns. If you see me with my van or in the mall and would like to discuss any concerns or issues that you have please feel free to stop and talk. Meeting people is one of the great pleasures of the job. One issue that is constantly raised is public drunkenness in Mitchell Street and anti-social behaviour in general. Public drunkenness is an entrenched problem in our community and needs a new approach. In the last decade the number of drunks picked up by police has risen from 11,000 to almost 30,000. That’s just far too many. People who repeatedly come to the attention of police should be subject to an “habitual drunks” order and sent for treatment. If they breach the treatment order the next step should be compulsory rehabilitation in a corrective institution. Until then the violence and vandalism plaguing our streets will continue to grow. With a team of helpers last week I delivered 1200 surveys to residents in and around the Old Hospital site. I have received many responses and wish to thank those residents that have returned the surveys to my office or contacted me to discuss the proposed development. Time and time again residents in Port Darwin have raised concern over the Henderson Government’s proposed amendments to the planning scheme. The amendments essentially abandon plans for a tiered inner city in favour of open slather development to a height of 90 metres anywhere in the city. We are in danger of creating a concrete jungle, not a living tropical city. The controversy over the Old Hospital site and the Flagstaff Park site and now the CBD building heights represents an utter failure by the Henderson Government to deal with planning issues in an effective way. On a more positive note I recently attended the Welcome Home Parade in the city for troops that have returned from East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. It was wonderful to see such a large gathering on the city streets to welcome the men and women of the Australian Defence Forces home. this issue Message from John P. 1 Did you Know?

With a team of helpers last week I delivered 1200 surveys to residents in and around

the Old Hospital site.

What is a Safety House? The Safety House Program is a nationally organised but local community based child protection program that provides a network of safe places for children within the community.Safety Houses can be a house, shop or a

business and they can provide assistance to children should they feel unsafe, threatened or unsure primarily when travelling to and from school.

The Program plays a preventative role in community safety, providing safer neighbourhoods for our children.Any responsible adult home between 7.00am to 8.30am and 3.00pm to 4.30pm Monday to Fridayatleast80%ofthetime(forthepurposeof children travelling to and from school) canapply to become a Safety House.

• On September 1839, Lieutenant John Stokes sailed in to the harbour on the HMS Beagle and named it “Port Darwin” in honour of his friend Charles Darwin

• In 1885-86 the Railway Jetty was built of timber construction in the same position as today’s Stokes Hill Wharf but considerably smaller in size. As the railway (Palmerston to Pine Creek) ran on to the wharf it enabled direct transhipment from ship to rail.
