Reaching out loud:

Rep. McDermott visits our clinic The “Reach Out and Read” (ROR) program for children received a boost when Congressman Jim McDermott arrived at the Pediatric Dental Clinic to read to children in the waiting room. The ROR program supports anticipatory guidance by health care professionals around literacy, models reading aloud by volunteer readers (often dental students) in the clinics, and provides a new book for each patient to take home. In honor of this visit, Scholastic Books provided the clinic with 1000 new books!

Alumni update

Glenn Short Barrington, RI

I am now retired, but Larry Thomas and I were the first two residents of the "new" program based at Children's under Mark Anderson way back in '80 with Pete Domoto guiding from the Department at the "U".

In retrospect it has been, all in all, a very rewarding and remarkable career choice and in most respects I will miss it very much. Especially the patients It is astounding how many lives we touch and what an influence we have on them as pedodontists. For example, I think my office calculated that we averaged three dental students per year out of our practice in last decade. I always considered that my greatest accomplishment. One of my associates, in fact, had been one of my patients.

Before I went to dental school I was trained as a Burmese linguist by the government. In my retirement I have gotten the opportunity to relearn the language and I have been working on a video compilation of Burmese performance arts in Burma.

There is so much to do! Retirement is never boring.

[email protected]

Bob Weis Santa Rosa, CA I guess I do have some news since I retired in June of this year. After taking a month trip to Alaska and seeing grandkids in Oregon, I did what I always said: "When I grow up I want to be a truck driver". I got a commercial license and spent September and October hauling grapes from vineyards to wineries. Quite a change from pedo!! [email protected]

Launching the Atlas! Look for it next spring at national conferences By Dr. Devereaux Peterson

The second edition of the Atlas of Pediatric Dentistry is scheduled for official release next spring

with fanfare and hoopla. Department Chair Dr. Joel Berg calls it the “launch.” “The Atlas has the potential to reach those needing up-to-date information on pediatric dentistry all around the world. Our partnership with Okayama University will help us bring the Atlas to locations previously not imagined,” said Dr. Berg. Dr. Berg has identified a marketing executive and a marketing specialist to develop an overall strategy for alerting dentists and other health care providers to the Atlas. A major part of the strategic plan will be to introduce the second edition at two major national meetings next year - the American Dental Education meeting in Seattle and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry meeting in San Francisco. A combination of table clinics, vendor demonstrations, poster demonstrations, and oral presentations are planned for the meetings.

The marketing experts will develop presentation materials for the conferences. In addition, they will distribute materials about the Atlas through postal mailings and a specially designed website. In addition to Dr. Berg, other people contributing to the “launch” include faculty members Dr. John Davis, Dr. Tarja Kaakko, and Dr. Devereaux Peterson. Also, three predoctoral students working diligently on the project are assisting Drs. Kaakko and Peterson with a research study investigating student attitudes about the Atlas and how students use it in their coursework. The results of the study will be presented at the meetings. The students are Erika Smarte (Second Year), Chris Herzog (Fourth Year), and Mike Jorgensen (Fourth Year). Some of you already know these students, and the rest of you will get to know them much better in the future. All are planning careers in pediatric dentistry.

Dr. Dev Peterson, co-developer of the Atlas, recently welcomed special visitors to the clinic. They are (l-r) Tsutomu Shimono, DDS, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Okayama University Dental School, Okayama, Japan and Seishi Matsumura, DDS, associate professor of pediatric dentistry.

“The Atlas has the potential to reach those needing up-to-date

information on pediatric dentistry all around the world.”

What is LEPED?*

The University of Washington Center for Leadership Education in Pediatric Dentistry By Dr. Penny Leggott and Cheryl Shaul

In July 2002 the Department of Pediatric Dentistry was awarded a federal grant by the Maternal

and Child Health Bureau for a Center for Leadership Training in Pediatric Dentistry (LEPED), the third such center in the USA. The Universities of Iowa and North Carolina have the other two centers — both of which have been funded for a number of years. The purpose of our program is to train pediatric dentists to be not only excellent clinicians but also to be leaders in education, research, public health administration, policy and service/advocacy for mothers and children (MCH) populations. We want to impart these primary goals to all our trainees:

● a vision of social responsibility for the needs of underserved children and families;

● ensure integration of oral health services into health care for vulnerable populations— including children with special health care needs (CSHCN);

● the leadership skills necessary to accomplish this vision.

A second key training goal, the development of a new concurrent MSD/MPH degree in conjunction with the School of Public Health and Community Medicine (SPHCM), has recently received formal approval from the Graduate School of the University of Washington. This is a three-year program that we anticipate will further strengthen collaborative ties between the School of Public Health and the Department of Pediatric Dentistry by creating an environment in which masters’ students and faculty from both Schools can contribute to collective educational experiences and develop joint initiatives and activities pertaining to the oral health of MCH

populations. We enrolled our first two LEPED trainees in June 2003 and in September faculty and trainees attended our first joint LEPED conference in Iowa. As the “new kids on the block”, this was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about each others’ programs, to share ideas, and to network and socialize. In April 2004 we will host a national MCH Leadership conference co-sponsored with SPHCM and supported by MCHB, and the UW Center for Comprehensive Oral Health Research. *What LEPED Is Not: a new French bike; a cross between a leopard and a lemur; or a misspelling of the past tense of the verb ‘to leap’.

Pediatric Dentistry reaches out

Underserved communities benefit from programs By Dr. Wendy Mouradian

Reaching out to underserved communities has long been a part of Pediatric Dentistry’s culture,

from ABCD programs to undergraduate pediatric dentistry rotations in the Yakima Valley. The department is now playing a different kind of leadership role in two other key educational partnerships. One of these, the Interdisciplinary Children’s Oral Health Promotion project (ICOHP), is a federally-funded effort to deliver oral health training to family medicine residents and faculty in rural and underserved areas of Washington, Idaho and Alaska. Along with basic oral health information for children and families, this program emphasizes communication and collaboration between physicians and dentists. The trainings are provided by departmental faculty as well as by our pediatric dentistry residents and fellow. Community pediatric dentists often participate in trainings, adding practical insights to the didactic lessons. Project directors Dr. Wendy Mouradian and Dr. Penelope Leggott think the success of this program is due, at least in part, to the warmth and collegiality of the resident-to-resident interactions. The Principal Investigator of this grant, Wendy Mouradian, MD, MS, is a pediatrician with a joint appointment in Pediatric Dentistry, who devotes most of her time to children’s oral health issues. The Department is also targeting community-based pediatric dentistry resident education. While residents have profited from rural rotations of up to three months in the Yakima Valley, there has never been a full-fledged effort to expand the residency to a rural area. This fall the Department partnered with the Yakima Valley Farmworker’s Clinic and others in a bid for a full-time rural residency track in the Yakima Valley. If funded, this grant will be the first of its kind to provide complete community-based residency training in a migrant and community health center.

Residency program hopes to expand By Dr. Dennis Sipher The residency program is rolling along at a smooth pace. The residents are a very enjoyable group to work with and they have bonded well and support each other in many ways, says Dr. Dennis Sipher, program director. First-year residents were recently baptized under academic bombardment when they presented their research ideas to a group of distinguished academicians in Seattle. Dr. Sue Coldwell, now responsible for our department’s research efforts, organized the evening dinner presentation. Ideas and remarks were bursting in air throughout the evening. The second-year residents are beginning to think about career directions, but the majority of their time is spent finishing research projects. Future plans call for the program to expand. The department submitted a grant proposal to establish two additional residency positions. These residents would be based in Yakima. Developments in distance learning should make it possible to insure that academic requirements can be met as well as clinical requirements for the residents based there. A major difference for this site option is that it would not be a Masters in Science Dentistry (MSD) track but a two-year certificate only. We hope to have this option available for residents starting in June 2005. We will soon announce residents for next year. We received more than 120 applications for the four positions in the program and we are impressed by the quality of the applicants.

Very proud to work with an outstanding team

We’ve had a busy year, and it appears that next year will bring even more excitement and challenges. I am very proud to

work with an outstanding team of staff, residents and faculty who come to work every day eager to make things better. The spirit of cooperation inspires us to do even more. It would be impossible for me to list everything the departmental team has accomplished in the past year. I want to highlight only a few activities, knowing that I’ll probably omit something equally interesting. I hope that during the coming year, I’ll have opportunities to visit with you to continue the story and share more about the goings-on in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. Connection to Dental Public Health We’ve taken steps to upgrade our productivity in the clinic; we will titrate the right mix of clinical performance/production with the necessary educational tools. Our research program is getting stronger. The work of the residents highlighted in this newsletter will bring important findings to practitioners. Faculty are engaged in innovative trends in oral care research including early caries diagnostics, restorative therapies and pulpotomy success analysis. We continue to improve our connection to Dental Public Health Sciences (DPHS), a department at UWSOD that has been a national leader in examining access to care/disparities issues. Doug Ramsay’s previous experience as interim chair of Pediatric Dentistry will serve us well in capitalizing on our common bond as he embarks upon his new role as chair of DPHS. Our comprehensive Infant and Toddler Oral Health program is in its active planning stages. Look for exciting news next year about how we’ll enhance the predoctoral education program in many ways. Thanks to Dev Peterson and his team of faculty, who have done an exceptional job in defining the necessary curricular changes and required policy changes in the predoctoral program. New full-time faculty recruited What would this column be without a real “sneak preview?” We are thrilled to have successfully recruited Dr. Rebecca Slayton to join us as a full-time faculty member in the spring. Rebecca is a board-certified pediatric dentist, has a PhD in genetics, and is currently chair of Pediatric Dentistry at OHSU. Later on, we’ll tell you about some plans we have with

First and second-year residents plan their research projects (and have fun)

By Dr. Jennifer Marshall

It’s that time of year when the first-year residents begin to solidify ideas for research projects. In

late October, the faculty from Pediatric Dentistry and Public Health came together for dinner at the House of Hong with the residents to discuss project ideas. First-year Residents Dr. Joseph Kelly and Dr. Yoo-Lee Yea plan on pursuing projects related to public health as both of them are enrolled in the combined MSD/ MPH program under the MCH training grant. After ten years practice on the Santee Sioux Indian Reservation, Joseph is enjoying his return to academia. His interests lie in infant oral health education, new paradigms of infant oral health care delivery, and building career support for public/community health professionals. In his spare time, he enjoys classic film, woodworking, and exploring the Puget Sound. Yoo-Lee, originally from Seattle, comes to us from the University of Michigan. She’s our newlywed with a new house and car. Her project is designed to look at current caries risk assessment models, evaluating their efficacy. Additionally, she will evaluate a new device called QLF (Quantitative Light-Induced Fluorescence) which will aid early diagnosis of smooth surface caries for primary teeth. Dr. Victoria Vu comes to us after three years of general dentistry in Texas. A graduate of Baylor School of Dentistry, her project will evaluate a new combination etch/primer/bond material and its effectiveness with sealant retention. In her free time, she enjoys snowboarding, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. Dr. Kristin Johannsen comes to us from the University of Southern California. Her research project will evaluate the validity of the DIFOTI (Digital Imaging Fiberoptic Transillumination) device for evaluating interproximal caries on primary teeth. Her hobbies include traveling, cooking, and snowboarding. Second-year residents As the end of the year draws near, the second year residents continue to collect data for their research projects. Dr. Jennifer Marshall has received tremendous support from local pediatric dentists in her research project on autism and behavior management. She thinks the overwhelming positive response from pediatric dentists as well as parents of children with autism will yield valuable information. Dr. Scott Rowley continues to collect data on the trends of dental emergencies at Seattle’s Children’s Hospital. After reviewing over 1,200 charts, he should be somewhere near halfway through data collection! Hopefully he will complete his chart review some time before his wife, Amy, has their baby. Congratulations to the Rowley family. Dr. Christopher Lugo continues to see progress on his project. He plans to contact all local Washington State Pediatric Dental practices to participate in a survey on pulp therapy. As always, the residents do get out and have fun. Occasionally, you will spot us at the Ram Bar and Grill during Happy Hour. Dr. Jay Enzler, a recent graduate of the UW Pediatric Dental program, was kind enough to fund our last trip to the Ram. For the early risers, Dr. Dennis Sipher
