s ABGuidelines for Safe and Efficient UseImportant: Read this information before using your portable phone

GeneralSince its introduction in the mid 1980s the port-able phone is one of the most exciting and inno-vative products ever developed. With it, youcan stay in contact with your office, your home, emergency services, and others.

Your telephone is a radio transmitter and re-ceiver. When it is ON it receives and also sendsout radio frequency (RF) energy. Dependingupon the type of mobile phone you have pur-chased, it operates in different frequency rangesand employs commonly used modulation tech-niques. When you use your phone, the systemhandling your call controls the power level atwhich your phone transmits.

For the safe and efficient operation of your phone, observe these guidelines.

Exposure to radio frequencyenergyThe International Commission on Non-IonizingRadiation Protection (ICNIRP), sponsored bythe World Health Organization (WHO), publish-ed a statement in 1996 which sets limits for ex-posure to RF fields from handheld mobile

phone. According to this statement, which isbased on the available body of research, there isno evidence that mobile terminals meeting therecommended limits can cause any adversehealth effects. All Ericsson telephones conformto the ICNIRP recommendations, and interna-tional exposure standards, such as:

CENELEC European Pre-standardENV50166-2

ANSI/IEEE C95.1-1992 (USA, Asia- Pacific)

If you want to limit RF exposure even further, you may choose to control the duration of yourcalls and operate your phone in the most powerefficient manner.

Efficient phone operationHow to use your phone for optimum perform-ance with minimum power consumption:

Hold the phone as you would any other tele-phone. While speaking directly into the mouth-piece, angle the antenna in a direction up andover your shoulder. If the antenna is extendable,it should be extended during a call.

Do not hold the antenna when the phone is INUSE. Holding the antenna affects call quality,

may cause the phone to operate at a higherpower level than needed and shorten talk andstandby times.

Antenna care and replacementDo not use the phone with a damaged antenna.Replace a damaged antenna immediately. Con-sult your manual to see if you may change theantenna yourself. If so, use only an Ericsson ap-proved antenna. Otherwise, take your phone to aqualified service centre for repair.

Use only the designated Ericsson antenna. Un-authorized antennas, modifications, or attach-ments could damage the phone and may violatethe appropriate regulations.

Do not use an antenna designed for any othertype of portable telephone than the telephoneyou have purchased.

DrivingCheck the laws and regulations on the use oftelephones in the areas where you drive. Alwaysobey them. Also, when using your phone whiledriving, please:

Give full attention to driving.

Use hands-free operation, if available.

s ABPull off the road and park before making or an-swering a call if driving conditions so require.

RF energy may affect some electronic systemsin motor vehicles. In addition, some vehiclemanufacturers forbid the use of mobile phonesin their vehicles. Check with your vehicle manu-facturer’s representative to be sure your phonewill not affect the electronic systems of your ve-hicle.

Electronic devicesMost modern electronic equipment, for exam-ple, equipment in hospitals and cars, is shieldedfrom RF energy. However, RF energy from tele-phones may affect some electronic equipment.

Turn your phone OFF in health care facilitieswhen regulations posted in the areas instructyou to do so. Always request permission beforeusing your phone near medical equipment.

Mobile telephones may affect the operation ofsome implanted cardiac pacemakers, equipmentfor people with hearing impairments and othermedically implanted equipment. Pacemaker pa-tients should be aware that the use of a mobilephone very close to a pacemaker may cause thedevice to malfunction. Avoid placing the phoneover the pacemaker, i.e. in your breast pocket. When using the phone, place it at your ear oppo-site the pacemaker. If a distance of 15cm. iskept between the phone and the pacemaker, the

risk of interference is limited. Contact your car-diologist for more information.

AircraftTurn your phone OFF before boarding any air-craft.

Use it on the ground only with crew permission

Turn off your phone before the aircraft leavesthe ground. Do not use it in the air.

To prevent possible interference with aircraftsystems, safety regulations require you to havepermission from a crew member to use yourphone while the plane is on the ground. To pre-vent interference with communication systems, you must not use your phone while the plane isin the air.

Power SupplyConnect AC (Power supply) only to designatedpower sources as marked on the product.

To reduce risk of damage to electric cord, re-move from outlet by holding onto AC adapterrather than cord.

Make sure the cord is located so that it will notbe stepped on, tripped over or otherwise sub-jected to damage or stress.

To reduce risk of electric shock, unplug unitfrom power source before attempting any clean-ing, then use soft cloth dampened on with water.

ChildrenDo not allow children to play with your phone. It is not a toy. Children could hurt themselves orothers (by poking themselves or others in theeye with the antenna for example). Childrencould also damage the phone or make calls thatincrease your telephone bills.

Blasting areasTo avoid interfering with blasting operations, turn your unit OFF when in a “blasting area” orin areas posted “turn off two-way radio”. Con-struction crews often use remote control RF de-vices to set off explosives.

Potentially explosiveatmospheresTurn your phone OFF when in any area with apotentially explosive atmosphere. It is rare, butyour phone or its accessories could generatesparks. Sparks in such areas could cause an ex-plosion or fire resulting in bodily injury or evendeath.

Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphereare often, but not always, clearly marked. Theyinclude fuelling areas, such as gas stations, be-low deck on boats, fuel or chemical transfer orstorage facilities, and areas where the air con-tains chemicals or particles, such as grain, dust,or metal powders.

The Phone BookYou can store phone numbers in two places: onyour SIM Card and in your phone’s own mem-ory. The choice is based on your needs. If youuse one SIM Card in many phones, the phonebook stored on the SIM Card is always avail-able to you.
