Playdough Mat Activity 1:Cover The Castle!

Ways to Use:

• Encourage children to cover and count the windows, turrets and flags as well as the door with playdough. They should be encouraged to press, squish or roll playdough into shapes!

• Provide a number die. Have child roll the die and cover that specific number of items on the picture.

• Provide number cards (use the Calendar pieces from this packet) and place face down on the table. The child flips one card over and identifies the number. The child then covers that specific number of items (windows, flags, etc.) with playdough.

Skills: muscle development; fine motor control; eye-hand coordination; number recognition; rote counting; rational counting

• Print out the Cover the Windows full page castle (I have included 3 different colored castles!)

• Provide playdough (suggestion: use the blue & white playdough recipes from this packet).

Song Card & Song PosterHow to use:• Print and laminate the song card below (it is 5” X 3”).• Place in a can or box with other cards of songs your children

love!• In transitional times (waiting to go outside or wash hands,

etc.), pull out your song box or song can (I use a decorated coffee can!).

Tree Decorating

Directions:

Print and laminate the following pages. Cut out the ornaments.

Place the tree that has the white circles inside the file folder.

Place the different colored ornaments in a bowl.•Have the children choose an ornament and discuss the color they have in their hand •Have each child place (and name the color!) an ornament on the tree.•Use this tree for some math! Ask: How many orange ornaments are here? Are there more blue or more green ornaments?How many ornaments are on the tree all together? How many ornaments are still in the bowl?

Extension: Use a dice and have the child place that number or ornaments on the tree or remove that number of ornaments from the tree.

Extension: With the tree that has no circles on it: Provide colored playdough for the children to decorate their tree with ornaments, garland, etc! There are blackline masters in the packet for you to color, create patterns or perhaps print numbers or letters for the children to use.











Build a Snowman Game

Directions:

Print the die printout on the next page. Assemble into a die and cover with clear packing tape for durability.

In a sorting tray or bowls, provide twigs, buttons, mini paper hats, felt/foam circles (2 different sizes- 1 for the head and one for the body); pieces of orange toothpicks (for the nose).

The children roll the die and choose the part they rolled to create that part of their snowman.

Olaf Bowling: Olaf Faces

Directions:

Print and cut out the following Olaf Face page. Tape the faces to clear or white plastic cups. The children take turns setting up the Olaf Cups as bowling pins to knock down.

EXTENSION: Provide paper and a pen. Have the children print their names on the paper. Each time they bowl, tell them to count how many cups they knocked over and print that many tally marks (lines) next to their name. At the end of the game, help them to count the tallies and print the number





Muffin Tin Frozen Jewels

Directions:

Place numbers in the compartments of a muffin tin.

Provide a bowl of glass jewels for ice cubes (or use actual ice cubes!).

The children count and place the appropriate number of “Frozen Jewels” into each muffin tin section.

There are blank circles for you to print the numbers you are working on with your children.

Snowflake Name Game

Directions:

Print out snowflakes with letters on them (have multiple of many letters so there are enough to spell out each child’s name in your classroom).

Have the children find the letters that are in their name and place them in order.Or, in advance, glue the letters of their name in order on a strip of paper.

Print Out number Number Mats & Laminate. You can attach to the inside of a file folder or just store them in one. I’ve laminated the mats and each one in its own file folder. I then used clear, packing tape to secure it to the inside of the file folder.Provide number (or dot) dice and pom poms (or playdough!).

Ways to Use:The children roll a die and cover that specific number with a pom pom or piece of playdough.The children roll a die and cover that specific number with the appropriate number of pom poms (use the mini-pom poms-great for fine motor development!) or with the appropriate number of pieces of playdough.Provide number cards (use the calendar pieces in this pack). Provide the playdough you made with the children.

Provide items for the children to add to their snowmen such as:• googly eyes• beans or buttons (for buttons on the snowman)• small twigs (arms)• strips of fabric (scarves)• orange fabric cut into carrot shapes or orange toothpicks cut in half (noses)• fabric hats• a variety of colors of playdough

Ways to Use:Set out the items listed above in a sectioned tray along with the white, sparkly playdough you made (recipe in this packet) or your favorite white playdough.Let the children explore and play with the playdough and items.In addition to the items above, also provide a wide variety of colors of playdough. The children can use it to make the eyes, arms, etc. (rather than the items provided) as well as add other items to the snow mountain scene. NOTE: THE PLAYDOUGH WILL GET MIXED! You NEED to be okay with this…how are children to learn about the materials we give them if we have limits like “don’t mix the colors”?! …….Let it go…….. ;) As with any game, this does NOT need to be a formal activity! Frozen-Inspired Wintery Playdough

4 cups flour 1 cup salt 2 cups hot water 2 TBSP vegetable oil Blue food coloring Blue & Silver Glitter (4 TBSP)

BLUE Wintery Playdough1. Include children in the cooking by letting each child put 2 ingredients in. For example, there are 5 ingredients

(adding the oil & food coloring to the hot water is the adult job!). If you have 12 children, have split the 4 dry ingredients into 3 portions so each child has an ingredient to put in!

2. Have children add only two cups of flour, all the salt and the blue glitter (I used 4 heaping tablespoons of glitter) into a bowl.

3. In a separate bowl, the adult adds the vegetable oil & food coloring (8-10 drops, depending on HOW blue you want it!) to the hot water and gives it a few stirs.

4. Pause! Take a moment to let the children watch the food coloring drift through the oil and mix into the water!5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.6. Have the children take turns stirring! When all mixed, you will need more flour (about 1-2 cups) Add a little at a

time until it is the correct consistency. Be sure the children help you to knead the dough!7. Now repeat to make white playdough (but add NO food coloring and use silver glitter instead of blue, although

the blue glitter would look fabulous in the white playdough as well! Recipe makes enough for 8 children.

I recommend making 2 batches: One plain (white) with silver glitter and the other blue with blue glitter!
