    Editorial President's Message

    My dear Pudu Rotarians,

    Peace be unto you.

Welcome back from your long weekend and I trust you have had a wonderful time with your family and loved ones. As you read this issue of our Berita Pudu I am pleased to announce the latest addition of two Honorary Members into our fold.

It is with great pride and joy that we get to extend the Rotary Honorary Membership to our very own PP Dato’ PY Choong and PP Rosemarie Wee. The Rotary Honorary Membership is given by election of a Rotary Club to people who have distinguished themselves by meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals.

PP Dato’ PY Choong and PP Rosemarie Wee need no elaboration of their commitment and contributions to the cause of Rotary ideals, particularly in regards to projects undertaken by our club. The club can always count on their support – be it in sharing their expertise or resources to help us carry out a successful project.

I wish to put on record that the recommendation for conferring this Honorary membership to these two outstanding individuals was decided by last Rotary year’s (RY 2011/12) Board. I am honored to be given this pleasant task to induct them into our fold as Honorary members of our club for this Rotary year.

Our club is blessed to have these two Honorary members who will be able to play an active part in our club projects. PP Dato’ PY Choong is the undisputed “Fund Raising” champion of our club while PP Rosemarie Wee is the queen of publicity. With these combinations of expertise in our midst and all our other active Rotarians, Rotary Club of Pudu has laid a strong foundation for the future leadership of this club to bring the club to higher heights.

Do drop a note to welcome our newest Honorary Members, if you have not already done so. I am sure they will be happy to hear from you.

Till the next issue, stay happy and stay safe.

    In Rotary Service,aaronOnglaiHuatPresident RY 2012/13

    pUDUCONTiNUeSTOROll:abriefrecapofwhathadhappenedduringthelastfewmonths

We had a successful installation dinner and had a good time with wonderful fellowship with our sister club friends. Since then we had attended their respective installations too with President Aaron Ong leading the members. We had been to RC Songkhla, RC Dhonburi, RC Singapore West, RC Hong Kong Harbour and RC Mandaluyung in great numbers. Besides meeting up with good friends and had good fellowship with them, there were a lot of shopping too.

    The club continues to roll!!!

The Interactors all had their successful installations, meaning succession were in place. It is not a trivial matter as in some years and in quite a number of Interact Clubs (not under our care) there were problems in succession leaving the clubs in limbo. Thus it is due credit to our hardworking New Gen team. Not forgetting we too had a successful ILTS in March. And a successful Rotarian-Teacher Advisers Hi Tea too in May.

Not forgetting the Rotaractors who staged a delightful and innovative installation in August.

Our Fund Raising in May too was a great success as we managed to raise the required amount for our year’s activities. Thanks to Chairman VP Rtn Lawrance Annies who worked very hard.

Our activities continues unabated starting with our firesides to inculcate Rotary Information to new and old members. So far we had firesides on New Gen, Service and Club Administration with various members’ homes as venues . We had a great time visiting the Jenjarom Old Folks Home in August. The visit was also an opportunity for Rotarians’ families to get to know one another and everyone had a great lunch at Pulau Carey.

Who can forget the wonderful food at the 100%ers’ dinner in August? IPP Steven gave out some lovely t-shirts in appreciation for the effort to be a 100%er.

The highlight of the last few months surely is the hosting of the District Governor during his visit to the club in early Sept. He had met our Interactors and Rotaractors, and attended our 2nd club assembly at PDG Dr Paul Lee’s residence and we got to know DG Mansoor Saat and District First Lady Emzita better. He gave an inspiring speech during our luncheon meeting.

In the meantime, the various service avenues had their respective monthly committee meetings. The BOD also met without fail each month.

In other words, the club continues to roll!!!

Rotary International (also known as the Rotary Club) is an international service club whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. It is a secular organization open to all persons regardless of race, colour, creed, religion,

gender, or political preference. There are 34,282 clubs and over 1.2 million members worldwide. The members of Rotary Clubs are known as Rotarians. Members usually meet weekly for breakfast, lunch or dinner, which is a social event as well as an opportunity to organize work on their service goals.

The first class of Rotary-sponsored scholars will begin their studies 18 October at the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft, the Netherlands, under a strategic partnership between the Institute and The Rotary Foundation.

The partnership, formed in 2011, seeks to address the world’s water and sanitation crisis by increasing the ranks of trained professionals needed to devise, plan, and implement solutions in countries that bear the brunt of the problem. Under the partnership, The Foundation provides packaged grants to Rotary clubs and districts, which select and sponsor up to eight students a year for scholarships to any of three 18-month Masters of Science degree programs at UNESCO-IHE, the world’s largest postgraduate water education facility.

This year’s scholars include: Temesgen Adamu (Ethiopia), Godfrey Peterson Baguma (Uganda), Kenechukwu Okoli (Nigeria), Annet Ahimbisbwe (Uganda), Rafiu Jimoh (Nigeria), Bernice Asamoah (Ghana), Juma Haineni (Kenya) and Gonzalo Duró (Argentina).

“By identifying high-quality, high-potential candidates for these scholarships, Rotary clubs help the countries most impacted by the water and sanitation crisis increase their capacity to identify and implement solutions. It is a strategic, long-term investment with long-term benefits,” said Rotary Foundation Chair Wilfrid J. Wilkinson.

Rotary clubs and Rotarians are mentoring the students both in their home country as well as during their stay at UNESCO-IHE. Relationships and networks are built that enable the students to effectively implement their skills upon return to their home country.

“My academic program and future career will predominantly help toward addressing my community’s water and sanitation issues by embarking on groundwater exploration, organizing training at the local government … making available well-designed disposal facilities, and carrying out routine water quality assessment,” said Jimoh, one of the eight scholars, from Lagos, Nigeria.

Under the Foundation’s new grant model, Rotary is forging strategic partnerships with established organizations that have expertise in Rotary’s areas of focus. Packaged grants support scholarships and service projects with sustainable, high-impact outcomes in one of the six areas of focus.
