Survey via Downtown Barrie Website – www.downtownbarrie.ca/contactus/ or at www.barrie.ca Barrie Downtown Branding Survey A s you well know, life continues despite winter. Just as a snow-laden landscape often adds a touch of magic as we hit the road, that same snow, under the wrong conditions, can be a hazard and throw your daily plans into a nasty tailspin. Here are some tips from Barrie’s Community Emergency Planning Department to keep you ready and safe. What do the Warnings Mean? Blizzard Warning : Snow blowing in wind greater than 40 km/h, a wind chill over 1600, and visibility less than 1 km; Conditions last 4 hours or more. Heavy Snowfall Warning: Snowfall of 10 cm or more in 12 hours or less, or 15 cm or more in 24 hours. Freezing Rain Warning: Slippery walking and driving conditions with possible damage to trees and overhead wires due to ice. How Can I Prepare For Hazardous Winter Roads? 1. Prepare an Emergency Kit for your car with the following: a shovel windshield scraper and small broom flashlight extra batteries water snack food extra hats, socks and mittens Necessary medications tow chain or rope booster cables windshield scraper and small broom battery powered radio water matches First aid kit with pocket knife blanket(s) road salt and sand emergency flares / florescent distress flag 2. Pick well-traveled roads. Roads sheltered between trees, buildings, and housing are best. In wide- open areas, visibility can be virtually zero during heavy blowing snow or a blizzard. 3. Pick a travel contact. If you must travel during a winter storm, drive during the day and tell someone your route, departure, and arrival times. 4. Keep your vehicle travel-ready. Top-up on anti- freeze, wiper fluid, and oil; keep your brakes, battery and ignition, your heater and defroster and thermostat in great shape; install good winter tires or all-season. 5. Be wise and gas-up. Maintain at least a half tank of gas at all times during the winter season. 6. Plan your departure wisely. When freezing rain hits, wait several hours after the rain ends to allow sand/ salt to be spread. 7. Dress to suit the weather in case you are stranded. Wear a hat and mittens, which are warmer than gloves. Multiple thin layers of loose- fitting clothes trap heat while aiding circulation. What If I’m Stranded In A Blizzard? Don't panic. Stay in your car; you won't get lost and you'll have shelter. Avoid over-exertion and exposure. Shoveling and bitter cold can cause death. Keep fresh air in your car by opening a window on the sheltered side, away from the wind. Run your motor sparingly since overuse of headlights can run your battery down. Clear the exhaust pipe frequently of snow build-up; Exhaust fumes are lethal. Exercise your limbs, hands and feet vigorously. Keep moving and don't fall asleep. Keep watch for traffic or searchers. Check www.barrie.ca for more information on winter safety. On Tuesday, January 25th meet the new Barrie.ca we're launching a new & improved website
