TIMING! Plan plenty of time to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. A World Heritage site, HVNP has much to see and do. Its best to spend the night at Volcano House or nearby Volcano Village to best enjoy your road trip to and from the park; its located on the southeastern end of the island, Map G:K12.

SEE RED! Stay after dark to see red. At press time, a red glow emanates from the ongoing gas eruption of Halemaumau Crater. Peer right into the action at the Jagger Museum Overlook. The billowing plume is the result of molten activity in the craters lava lake. The park is open 24-7 so check it out after dinner or before dawn, when its less crowdedyou may hear lava bubbling below! Entry is $10 per vehicle. Map F:B20.

INFO! Eruption activity can change so stop at Kilauea Visitor Center; its staffed by rangers 8:45 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, 808-985-6000. Find a daily posting of free interpretive programs and catch a short film, Born of FireBorn of the Sea, followed by a current eruption update, at the top of the hour. For an online eruption update, visit nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/lava2.htm.

    Halemaumau Crater

  • THIS WEEK BIG ISLAND

SCIENCE! Watch real-time scientific monitors in action inside Jagger Museum. Colorful, large murals by the late art historian Herb Kawainui Kane depict the Hawaiian pantheon, including Pelehonuamea, the deity of volcanoes. Open 8:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. daily with Life on the Edge ranger talks at 2, 2:30 and 5 p.m.

HIKE! Go subterranean with a walk through Thurston Lava Tube. A picturesque trail rich with bird song and towering tree ferns descends to the 500-year-old Nahuku tunnel thats illuminated by lights. Caves like this form by traveling magma.

MORE! Other park attractions illustrating the awe of volcanism: Kilauea Iki Crater, Devastation Trail, Keanakakoi Crater, Puu Loa Petroglyphs and the end of Chain of Craters Road, which was inundated by lava in 2003. www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit.

    Hike across Kilauea Iki Crater

A public viewing area in Kalapana is about a 1.5-hour drive from the park at the end of Hwy. 130 (Keaau-Pahoa bypass road), and requires a 1.5-mile roundtrip hike. Its currently open 3-9 p.m. daily, last car in at 8 p.m. Call for recorded updates, 808-961-8093.

It may be hard to concentrate on your game in Hawaii. After all, the lava-lined fairways provide a striking contrast to the manicured greens dappled by the canopies of palm trees. And then theres the ocean beckoning for your attention. But you can do itjust remind yourself that many Big Isle courses were crafted by the biggest names in course design. Waikoloa Village Golf Club offers a Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed, championship course with large, well-bunkered and undulating greens. Wide landing areas encourage aggressive tee shots. Rated the Big Islands Best Bargain by Golf Magazine, the course is frequented by local residents. Conveniently located above the Kohala Coast, the course is the second oldest on the Big Isle and treats golfers to mountain and coastal views. Hawaii Tee Times offers golf booking services at over 40 courses throughout the state. Play on the same courses as the pros, choosing your preferred course terrain. Hawaii Tee Times helps visiting golfers find either challenging or leisurely play.

Big Isle jewelry is inspired by island plants, sea life and history. Precious and gleaming, Hawaiian black coral is the official state gemstone. State, federal and international laws protect the sustainable harvest of black coral in designated waters. Black coral grows in deep-sea colonies, taking 50 years or more to mature. The coral is related to sea anemones and grows in a tree-like shape. While the living tissue of the coral is brilliantly

colored, the gem takes its name from the corals black skeleton. Hawaiians call it ekaha ku moana. The birthstone for June, pearls come in a variety of hues and shapes. Tahitian or black pearls are organic gems formed by the black lip oyster; they are French Polynesias largest export. South Sea pearls are produced using the large, 12-inch Pinctada maxima mollusk and is commercially harvested in Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines. Akoya pearls come from the akoya

oyster, which is found and farmed primarily in Japan and Asia. Freshwater pearls are created using freshwater mussels and farmed in the U.S. and Asia. Pearl Factory makes shopping more fun with excitement and memories! Pearl Factory is Hawaiis original pearl-in-the-oyster. First, choose your oyster and then the pearl is plucked from the shell. Next, pick a stunning sterling jewelry setting to enhance the pearlthere are over 120 selections. Island residents also wear bracelets bearing their childs name and bequeath the jewelry to the child later in life. Lehua Jewelers specializes in Hawaiian Heirloom jewelry, creating original scrolls for bracelets, rings, earrings and pendants for over 20 years. One-of-a kind, hand-engraved designs are named after the island f lora and fauna they are inspired by: Plumeria Flora, Kona Coffee, Waves, Inana Honu (Turtle). The namesake Lehua Blossom and Ohia Lehua designs pay tribute to the first tree to grow from lava and the Big Isles official f lower.

    Dos and Donts in Hawaii

When in Hawaii, do as the locals do and youll fit in just fine!

l Do wear a lei on any occasion. Every day is a special day in the Aloha State, so get lei-ed!

l Do try local exotic fruits and veggies that are easily accessible at Farmers Markets. Find out where islandwide at hawaiihomegrown.net/farmers-markets.

l Do wear aloha apparel while here, especially to a luau. Designed to be loose and comfy, it lets the tradewinds blow in and cool you, and can be worn back home during warm weather.

l Do take home souvenirs from Hawaii, but skip stowing lava rock. Not only does it weigh down the luggage, the practice is considered bad luck and known as Peles Curse. Hundreds of people who have done so have mailed their rock back, simply addressed to The Volcano. Do take pictures; leave only footprints.

l Do read labels when buying locally made coffees. Blends are not 100 percent Hawaiian coffees; they typically contain 90 percent imported beans.

l Do show the shaka sign to signify satisfaction and friendliness: smile and put up your hand with only your thumb and pinkie finger extended.

l Do not honk your horn unless absolutely necessary. The spirit of aloha prevails even when on the road.

l Do not wear shoes in the housea big no-no! When shopping, youll see signs for sale saying just that. Locals remove footwear at the door, a tradition brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants. By the way, f lip f lops or rubber sandals are called rubber slippers
