According to the National Board for Profes- sional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), Richland One is ranked in the top 30 districts across the United States in the number of National Board- certified teachers. The district now has 410 Na- tional Board-certified teachers. Richland One credits its comprehensive support programs for teachers as contributors to the district’s success. To be certified by NBPTS, teachers go through a rigorous two-part process that takes up to five years to complete. This process includes completing assessment center exercises based on content knowledge to prove that they have mastered the subjects they teach and that they know how to teach them. Proceeds will benefit the Palmetto Health Breast Center through the Palmetto Health Foundation’s Walk for Life/Race for Life. The game, which had to be postponed due to the flood, will be played Thursday, January 7 at 6:00 p.m. at W.J. Keenan High School. Tickets are $5 for ages 6 and up; children under 6 will be admitted free. Nothing But Net will feature a breast cancer survivor celebration/recognition presentation, a mascot line dancing competi- tion and a free throw shooting contest. At last year’s inaugural event, Richland One raised the most funds and won the free throw contest. The Richland Two team won the basketball challenge by two points, earning bragging rights and a trophy to dis- play at its district office. In the end, “Team Richland,” a joint effort of both districts, raised nearly $100,000 to support the Palmetto Health Breast Center and help fight breast cancer. FOR YOUR INFORMATIONFlu shot clinic at SAB

A Rite Aid pharmacist will be at the Stevenson Administration Building on Wednesday, December 16 from noon-2:00 p.m. to administer the flu vac-cine to employees who would like to get flu shots. The flu shot clinic will be in room 102 (board room). You must sign up by calling Angela Mosley or Kaleea Lewis at 231-7418 or 231-7419, or email them at [email protected] or [email protected]. Bring your insurance card with you Wednesday (Note: Flu shots are normally covered by state insur-ance). If you do not have insurance and still want to get a flu shot, the out-of-pocket cost is $31.99 (possibly less). For more information, contact Ms. Mosley or Ms. Lewis at 231-7418.

Save the date: Hall of Fame Induction GalaMake plans to attend the 12th annual Richland One Hall of Fame Induction

Gala, which will be held Saturday, February 13, 2016 at the Columbia Met-ropolitan Convention Center. This year’s honorees are: Dr. Raymond Bynoe, Jean Margaret Smith Card, Yvonne Donald, Charlie Fetner (posthumously), Gerald Floyd and Harold White.

The gala festivities will begin with a red carpet reception at 5:00 p.m., fol-lowed by the program/dinner starting at 6:00 p.m. Entertainment will in-clude music by Saxophonist Dante Lewis’ Band. Attire is black-tie optional. Tickets are $55 for Richland One employees and $75 (or $125 per couple) for the general public. Tickets will go on sale January 4. News & Notes• Morondo Lewis, a math teacher at Eau

Claire High School, has been elected as president-elect of the South Carolina Coun-cil of Teachers of Mathematics (SCCTM). SCCTM is an organization dedicated to en-couraging and stimulating greater interest in mathematics and its applications; en-couraging and providing opportunities for the exchange of ideas and materials related to the instruction of mathemat-ics; furthering the cooperative study of problems related to the teaching of mathematics at all levels; and working for the improvement and advancement of mathematics instruction at all levels of education. Mr. Lewis has taught various math courses in Richland One for more than 16 years. He also has coached several sports in the district.

• Amleht S. Alston, school counselor at Crayton Middle School, recently re-ceived her Ed.D. in educational leader-ship from Argosy University in Atlanta.

• Columbia High School teachers Julia Coleman and Jerry Robinson have been awarded funding through the DonorsChoose.org website to purchase equipment and materials to support teaching and learning in their classrooms. Ms. Coleman will receive a Mac Book lap-top and an instant camera to be used by students to cre-ate multimedia film projects. Mr. Robinson will receive much needed band instruments for musical instruction.

• Two former NFL players returned to their alma maters De-cember 11 to make special presentations as part of the na-tionwide celebration of the Super Bowl’s 50th anniversary. C.A. Johnson High School graduate Mike Jones (left), who played in the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots in 1997 and the Tennessee Ti-tans in 2000, presented a commemorative Golden Football to CAJ Athletics Director Gregory Pickett during half-time of the boys basketball game. Lower Richland High School graduate Jona-than Goodwin (center), who played in the Super Bowl with the New Or-leans Saints in 2009, made his Golden Football pre-sentation after the girls basketball game.
