This week Tawa AFC host Lower Hutt & Petone with our top two mens sides playing on Redwood.

The Capital Premier side looking to bounce back from a good performance against Western Suburbs in the Chatham Cup. The boys showed great resolve in the first half not conceding despite the lack of ball and had some chances too. Second half was all a bit much with West finishing with some classy strikes and running away with it by the end.

The seconds looking to take the week off and kick start the season having been in tight battles but failing to convert all those games to points. The boys could use some goals as out of the 5 games they have been kept scoreless 3 times. Be good to put some of those away

Hopefully the weather holds for some good footy and we bring home the points. Good Luck to all sides playing at home or away. Ben TurnerTawa AFC Chairman

The two goals were scored after about 30 mins, within 10 mins of each other both from out of the box, the second being a cracker lefty shot in the top corner.

The Wairarapa United replied with an incredible cross into the goal before half time.

The second half, true to form, was much more defensive with less composure and scattered with moments of good play. A second non-memorable goal from the

Tawa ladies got there first point on the table at todays home game!

We have been called a 45 minute side by coach Tim (who sometimes forgets his filter) and today was no different, but todays first 45 minutes was the best we have played so far this season. With great direction from the stand in goalie Elly, the passes were strung together well and built up from the back through to the front with minimal panicking and some quality moments of composure.

A chilly but dry afternoon at the hill for our Chatham Cup tie against Cental League big boys Western Suburbs, our game plan was to be compact out of possession and then pressure them up top with Mike and Soe.

Tawa lads started brightly and looked a threat in the final third with Soe and Mike continuing there promising partnership up top, the other key factor was our back four were doing well with 17 year old Dillon Lewis looking sound at left back winning his tackles and linking with the midfield and front two.

Our midfield four worked hard in and out of possession and the visitors were becoming frustrated and this lead to a couple of chances and corners, while keeper/coach

Lance was not troubled too much no score at the interval.

Halftime gave us a chance to re-group and hopefully get some energy in the tank for the second period, we knew they wouldn’t be happy and the first ten minutes would be vital, they came out looking to up the pace and were also more direct with quicker balls played foward.

Unfortunely for us they scored early after a neat finish, the next period was vital if we were to stay in the game, they showed there quality and went for the throat 2-0 down after ten minutes.

Our lads were looking tired and this took its toll and lead to desperate defending and a blunt in attack as

we struggled for the ball another couple of quick goals decided the fixture, we made three changes with Gustie, Jarred and Lauchie provided fresh legs and we dug in for the last fifteen minutes and Lauchie forced a couple of late corners.

Overall a pleasing performance against a Central League outfit espically in the first half and plenty of positives moving foward, man of the match was youngster Dillon for his excellent performance at left back.

TAWA BULLDOGS vs MARISTUnexpectedly the second half took on a very different character. Marist seemed to have run out of steam and more importantly our defence barely allowed them a clean shot for the whole second half....

For week 7 we were paired at Redwood park against Marist. Due to a following Chatham cup fixture we kicked off at earlier time of 12:00 and had some support from the 2nd team. We had played Marist during the prior season and had some familiarity with the likely strength and style of the two sides. We werealso fortunate to have two referees for this match, one was being assessed and the other was usually sitting in the Marist dugout.

Unlike prior matches we arrived in plenty of time, even allowing for setting up the pitch. We must have warmed up well as we benefited almost immediately, Shannon crossed from deep, near to the side line and some loose defending saw me succeed in skipping the ball both over my head and over the Marist keeper. Two nil followed quickly when Shannon finished one himself after it was crossed

before the face of the Marist goal. Having dominated posession and already converted that into goalswe might have imagined we would benefit from a walk over around this point, and we definitely took our foot off the gas.

Soon after this Marist warmed up to the game. Defensive lapses saw them score 3 goals and dominate the game for around the next 20 minutes. In fact it could have been more, Cam made a couple of fantastic saves which kept the score line close. Dan Rose scored our third just prior to half time after a well hit corner from Shannon and we managed to steady the ship enough so that was the score after 45 minutes.

As expected the game had been a bit rough and Tyler had to go off having sustained a kick. The main message at half time was we needed to tighten up defensively. Also we could maybe try to be more vocal than the spare referee.

Unexpectedly the second half took on a very different character. Marist seemed to have run out of steam and more importantly our defence barely allowed them a clean shot for the whole second half. But for some reason we started to struggle with our

finishing. We created many chances, had a lot of posession, but simply failed to finish any. Maybe the most clear chance fell to me as I collected a through ball behind the defensive line, but failed to lift it over the goal keeper as he dropped across my path to goal. Soon after this I found my way to the bench.

In the last 10 minutes we got our act together enough to take the points. Another ball into the area from Shannon caused confusion and a crash between Marist goal keeper and one of the Marist defenders, With the keeper out of play Richard scored to make it 4-3. We managed to hold the posession as far as needed through to the final whistle. After full time the spare referee thought the score may need revision due Tawa pushing the Marist players.

Credit for the result goes to our level of match fitness and in the second half long periods of some lovely team football, but particularly to all the players who came in only recently to the team. I think we will be in for a memorable away match up in the second round here.

Mom: Shannon for his 3 assists and goal

Smiffy delivers a perfect left foot corner directly into goal 1-0. Five minutes later Tawa get a second corner down the same flank, same result a goal from the corner kick 2-0 half time. The gaffer gave two stern half time warnings, you need aggression and be first to the ball and the two centre backs needed to get something on the goal keepers kicks as they will go long in the wind. The second half was always going to be tough half playing into the wind.

10 minutes into the second half Smiffy became hero to villain. Miramar attacked down the left hand side, ball comes over and Victor gets a hand to the ball but it falls at the feet of the striker. In slow motion the Miramar player loops the ball towards an empty net, until Smiffy leaps like a John West salmon to header the ball but for some unknown reason he decided to pluck it out the air with his hands. The spectators and player alike were laughing and the ref didn’t

We returned to our home ground Linden Park in very cold and windy conditions. With Blair still out due to having his 8 stitches removed mid-week but managing to keep his CHIN up, the Pythons were back to having a full complement of 9 players but again no subs. Henry put on the captains arm band and won the toss. His decision was to take the wind in the first half to try and build up a lead.

The line-up saw Victor take the gloves, Zach, Henry, Eamonn and Smiffy back 4, Tai and Chase holding the midfield and Thomas and Harrison upfront.

The gaffer had told Smiffy he was on corners and just do what he practiced during the off season and look to swing it in and go for goal. It’s a classic Peter Withers special. Tawa win a corner down the right hand side after 10 minutes, bang

even blow for a penalty but turned around to the Tawa coach and yells out he must be a Spurs supporter.Penalty scored 2-1.

Tawa starting playing some great football with Henry having a no non-sense policy at the back, Tai doing endless running and tacking in midfield and Thomas having a great second half when asked to slot into right back. Zack and Harrison were linking up as they do and Harrison relived the tension for the spectators with another great goal. Finalscore 3-1 win to Tawa.

GRIZZLIES vs SEATOUN“Get Withers on they cried and Withers responded with a fantastic little cameo...”

THE SECOND HALF WAS A MUCH MORE EVEN AFFAIR WITH TAWA LOOKING MORE THREATENING

THAN THE FIRST HALF.

A wounded Grizzlies side travelled out to Seatoun park on Saturday looking to get back on track following last week’s defeat to the table topping Wharfies. Missing 6 starters from the Karori match, we were fortunate to welcome back Welsh, Hawk, Dave and a half-fit Withers.

Trying to outdo Piney from the previous week, Welsh shared a unique pre-match tale of adversity, character, strength and being true to one’s self which left the other Grizzlies with far more questions than

answers. The remainder of the build-up consisted of Welsh complaining constantly about the refereeing appointment and Billy complaining about the cold. While both valid complaints it was clearly ruining their day. The Seatoun pitch is not quite the level of the Seatoun house or the Seatoun car but thankfully it was in reasonable condition for today’s match.

The match could not have started better as referee Safiq stamped his authority on the match early, sending Liam’s Chilean friend to the side-line in the opening minute for a breach of the sock tape rule, an unacceptable offense at our level of football. The Grizzlies benefitting from this numerical advantage and took an early lead, a

cross from the right by Welsh was met by Bazza to finish from close range. 1-0 Tawa after 2 minutes and at this point it would seem referee Safiq would not cost us the game like Welsh had claimed. The next 43 minutes was mostly spent in the Tawa half as we had to soak up a fair bit of pressure into a very strong southerly breeze. We held out well to go into the break leading 1-0 with the major scare being Tinder’s Tourette syndrome outburst while taking a throw in ……… BAZZA !!!

The second half was a much more even affair with Tawa looking more threatening than the first half. Seatoun were still making life difficult and created plenty of half chances themselves but

were struggling to break down the league’s best defence, even if today’s combined age was 200. That changed with about 20 minutes remaining as a Seatoun midfielder skipped past Tinder and Piney and smashed one into the top corner. An excellent goal and Seatoun now had their tails up. They then followed that up with two headed chances, one against the post and one just wide.

Get Withers on they cried and Withers responded with a fantastic little cameo from the bench. His composure on the ball and a few trademark touches reeked of mid fourties Withers and we put together a couple of really good chances but couldn’t find the back of the net. With 2 minutes

remaining Withers slipped a pass to Welsh on the left flank who cut inside his man and curled his shot past the hapless keeper and into the back of the net. 2-1 Grizzlies.

A big win against a strong Seatoun side who’s position on the table seems harsh on them. We can consider ourselves fortunate for the 3 points but that is very much football. Must make mention of some of the older lads that had to put 90 minute shifts in, Tilly and Bill and also Liam who did 70 in only his second hit out of the year. He was also very calm up against his South American friends so well done that man.
