Chicago JAZZ GREATS PLAN FUNDRAISER TO HONOR the de haasesAd man Tom Burrell describes her as a Pit Bull. And that is an apt description for Chicago icon Geraldine de Haas, who brought some of the worlds best jazz performers to the South Side for the much-anticipated JazzFest Heritage Music Weekend at the South Shore Cultural Center every August for 31 years.

Unfortunately, this year will be Geraldine's last JazzFest. Due to the failing health of both Geraldine and her husband, Eddie de Haas, they are joining their children in New Jersey. They will be leaving shortly after the festival, which takes place the first weekend in August.

To show the couple what they have meant to the City of Chicago and the jazz community, the Jazz Showcase, 806 S. Plymouth Ct., along with renowned pianist Willie Pickens, are hosting a farewell fundraiser for them on July 2, 2013 from 5:30 p.m. 11:00 p.m. Expected to perform are Arthur Hoyle, Ari Brown, Stu Katz, Ernie Adams, Miguel de la Cerna, Tammy McCann, Marlene Rosenberg, Audrey Morrison and many more. Geraldine started as a jazz singer with her brother Andy Bey. Known as Andy and the Bey Sisters, the singing trio traveled throughout Europe and recorded several records before disbanding the 10-year group. A few years after marrying jazz bassist, Edgar de Haas,

  • the singer moved to Chicago with her husband. After toiling in local theater, she took on a new rolethat of jazz advocate. The catalyst was Duke Ellingtons death in 1974. The musician in her could not imagine the citys leaders not paying some type of tribute to Ellingtons genius. Her efforts to produce the outdoor music tribute to Ellington in Grant Park was the forerunner to the many festivals we enjoy today.

When de Haas founded Jazz Unites Inc. in 1981, her mission was to expose the uniquely American art form to people who otherwise would not have access regardless of their economic status.

Against all odds, she kept the two-day JazzFest Heritage Music Weekend free to the public.

A reconstituted board is producing this years jazz festival, which it hopes to continue in Geraldine and Eddies honor. The festival will run August 3-4, 2013 under a new namethe Geraldine & Eddie de Haas JazzFest Heritage Music Weekend.

Tickets for the fundraiser honoring Gearldine & Eddie de Haas are $20 and can be purchased online atwww.jazzshowcase.com.

  • West Side Chicago blues legend Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater will appear at ShedFest in Highland Park on Saturday, July 20, 2013. Clearwater will be performing songs from his Alligator debut, West Side Strut. Clearwater is an intense, flamboyant, blues-rocking showman. He's equally comfortable playing the deepest, most heartfelt blues or rocking, good-time party music. DownBeat said, "Left-hander Eddy Clearwater is a forceful six-stringer...He lays down some gritty West Side shuffles and belly-grinding slow blues that highlight his raw chops, soulful vocals, and earthy, humorous lyrics."

Between his slashing guitar work, his room-filling vocals, and his self-defined "rock-a-blues" style (a mix of blues, rock, rockabilly, country and gospel), Eddy Clearwater is among the very finest practitioners of the West Side Chicago blues performing today. The blues world recognized his talent by giving him the Blues Music Award for Contemporary Blues - Male Artist of the Year in 2001. His previous release, 2003's Rock 'N' Roll City, was nominated for a Grammy Award. Now he's back with his very first Alligator CD, the aptly titled West Side Strut. Produced by young hotshot guitarist Ronnie Baker Brooks (son of the legendary bluesman Lonnie Brooks), is an energized mix of West Side blues and old school rock injected with a tough, up-to-the-minute contemporary edge. Featuring some of Eddy's hottest playing ever recorded, the CD burns with his stinging guitar and rough-and

Now, with West Side Strut, Eddy has made the very best album of his life. He loves to perform and on any given night he can usually be found tearing it up on stage somewhere around the world. He's played everywhere from Russia, Turkey, and Romania to Brazil and Alaska. He'll hit the road hard in support of the CD, strutting his slicing guitar licks and bringing his "rock-a-blues" music and his uninhibited live show to fans ready for a taste of the real West Side Chicago blues, played by a master at the very peak of his abilities.

Shedfest will take place on Saturday, July 20 at 1480 Old Deerfield Road, Highland Park, IL. Showtime to be announced so be sure to visit www.theshedfest.com for exact times as the event date comes closer.

Ticket prices are $15-$35 and are avialable through the Shed Fest website.

  • new release of the weekBEBO BEST & THE SUPER LOUNGE ORCHESTRA

Bebo Best aka The Alchemist Bebo Baldan, producer, musician, film composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist (bass, percussion, drums, sitar, guitar & keyboards) has worked on over 90 albums, and many soundtracks for films and TV, and has international recognition for the wise and original use of electronics and ethnic music that distinguished his works.

His collaborations with such personalities as Gilberto Gil, Moni Ovadia, Jon Hassel, Steven Brown, Steve Reich, Michael Nyman, Wim Mertens, Nitin Sawhney, Trilok Gurtu, Sinead O' Connor, David Torn, Ruichy Sakamoto, Frank Zappa, the American violinist Stephen James (Ravi Shankar, Bill Laswell), and guitarist David Torn (David Sylvian, Jan Garbarek, Don Cherry) has allowed him to explore ethnic and non-European types of music, an original Mediterranean formula influenced by jazz, traditional and warm electronic music.

After the huge success of their albums Sitar and Bossa, DJazzonga, Saronno on the Rocks, and Jazz for Imaginary Movies, the Italian composer, arranger, producer Bebo Best is back with his finest yet! With the spirit of whatever Nu Jazz might be, the album is a way-cool cinematic bossa-nova-style jazz groove that could pass for a genuine late-60s or early-70s soundtrack recording, garnished with early 21st century electronic touches! Bebo blends elements of dance music, jazz, triphop, brazilian jazz, swing, downtempo and dance floor New jazzy-grooved beats into one delicious, happy cocktail, and suggests the exuberant insouciance of parties, rides in convertibles on warm, full-moon nights, and an afternoon spent dancing barefoot with friends with a glass of sangria in your hand.

Guest vocalists include Brenda Boykin, Iain Mackenzie, and Anna Luca.

  • Guitarist John Scofield is comfortable in any setting whether it be jazz, blues or rock as he demonstrates on his latest recording, berjam Deux, which will be released July 2nd on Decca/Emarcy.

berjam Deux has been a decade in the works, following 2002s Grammy-nominated berjam; not that Scofield has been inactive in the interim, far from it. There have been seven John Scofield albums in the intervening years, as well as five others on which he is a co-leader on the project. His last Decca/Emarcy release was A Moments Peace (2011), a luxurious album of ballads the polar opposite of berjam Deux. His uncanny ability to drift between various styles of music with fluency, virtuosity and sincerity is rare.

    BERJAM DEUXEMARCY RECORDS

Fans of the original berjam will not be disappointed by berjam Deux Scofield comments, We used all kinds of different grooves for this record, but they are all basically dance grooves. Some might say they are from the African diaspora; theres Rhythm and Blues, Afro-beat, reggae and house, but whatever they are they are all funky. We used all these amazing world-grooves to blow over. Certain songs have been evolving over the ten years since berjam; Avi Bortnick had been working on some of these groove ideas and we took them and developed them into what you hear on our new record.

The music on berjam Deux is one of the styles I feel most comfortable with. I started with jazz-rock 40 years ago and the great thing about this music is that its still evolving. Ive been interested in combining jazz with other rhythmic forms since I became involved in music. I was spurred on in this direction by my collaboration with Miles Davis among others. Im from the fusion generation! If I were to tag a concept for the band, it would be exploring different forms of groove music.

The magic of this record is the stunning blend of R&B and John Scofields jazz influenced guitar that weaves melodies of power and beauty above and through the grooves. berjam Deux offers a compelling combination of music.

    Jazz Jam Sessions

ChicagoA jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. jam) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public.

Here are a selection of a weekly Jazz Jam Sessions in Chicago and in the area to check out.

  • We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. Thats why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well.

The Chicago Jazz Festival has long been celebrated as the first of the lakefront music festivals, and as it marks its 35th year, the event will move to Millennium Park from festival grounds in Grant Park, August 29-September 1. Performances will also happen in the Chicago Cultural Center. (78 E. Washington) The festival is presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. (DCASE) and programmed in partnership with the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The first evening of the Chicago Jazz Festival, Thursday, August 29, will once again coincide with the final evening of Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz. Then on Friday, three stages will come alive with entertainment in Millennium Park (including the north and south ends of the Chase Promenade) as the festival begins that day at 2 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours will also be extended from previous years, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and an additional stage will feature live performances, resulting in the festival providing the most hours of free jazz music than it has in recent years. As is the tradition of the festival, the 2013 Artist in Residence is Chicago drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake.

Drake moved to the Chicago area in the early sixties, living on the same street as Fred Anderson who would mentor the pre-teen drummer. By the early seventies, Drake joined Andersons band, playing with him on stage at the inaugural Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. His Artist Residency affords Chicagoans the rare opportunity to hear him in several contexts over the course of one weekend, and his appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival 34 years after he first played this event encompasses the festivals entire history.

Over the course of a career that dates back to 1994, Popa Chubby's tempestuous, soulful playing has never been more powerful. An imposing figure with a shaven head, tattooed arms, a goatee and a performance style he describes as "the Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motorhead meets Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson," Popa Chubby is an endearing character who is one of the genre's most popular figures. FitzGeralds has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950s and early 60s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. Hw C M FLINDY ENDRES

For Lindy Endres, music played a bit of a different role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the dancer, never the singer. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindys flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

Hw C M FTHE HARRIS GROUP

The Harris Group delivers an approach to progressive jazz that focuses on more than improvisation. Influenced by Joe Beck and Steps Ahead, The Harris Group offers jazz that will no doubt stand the test of time. Although it is the basis of their repertoire, The Harris Group knows the audience for their music is broad, not defined by jazz alone. The Harris Group knows how to please an audience that is looking for meat and blood rather than fleeting hits.
