What might be called “ear-opening expe-riences” helped make Vaughn Wiester whathe is today: a jazz man, through and through. The Clintonville resident can recall, asclearly as if it were yesterday and not 58 yearsin the past, going Christmas caroling in hishometown of Mount Vernon.“All of a sudden, the guy next to me begansinging notes that were different from theothers,” Wiester said last week. “They weredifferent, but they worked. He was singingwhat I later on learned to call the harmony, while the rest of us were singing what I lateron learned was the melody.”Flash forward four years. Wiester is a trom-bone player in the high school band. Direc-tor Robert Bechtel had challenged his musi-cians to go home and “learn this tricky thing”
‘Famous Orchestra’ found home at Woman’s ClubIt’s hard to stay famous when you’vegot no place to play. The Aug. 31 closing of the ColumbusMannerchor in German Village threatenedto end a nearly 15-year run for VaughnWiester’s Famous Jazz Orchestra. The 21-piece band first began performing at theold Columbus Music Hall starting in 1997and then, after a dozen years, moved to thevenue founded at 966 S. High St. by a Ger-man singing society.Dwindling membership prompted Man-nerchor officials to sell the building toColumbus City Schools in January 2011,with an official closing date of Aug. 31.Wiester had to find another place for hisjazz orchestra to play, but he didn’t rightaway.“There’s a lot of inertia in me,” the Clin-
tonville resident admitted.Meanwhile, at the Columbus Woman’sClub, director of sales and catering Kris-ten Steinhausser was wondering what todo with the catering facility’s slowest nightof the week, a Monday. The place is bookedmaybe once a year on that night.Serendipity was about to occur.Scott Weddell, who helps set up for var-ious events at the Woman’s Club, 3951 N.High St., was aware that Vaughn Wiester’sFamous Jazz Orchestra was about to becomea band without a home. Aware that thegroup was already scheduled to performfor the annual spring gala at the Woman’sClub, Weddell suggested to Steinhausserthat she might want to ask him to move the

It is the best of things, it is the worst of things. For Clintonville-Beechwold Community
Resources Center officials, the former Colum-bus Cancer Clinic building on Ceramic Drivethus far offers the best bet for a new location.
For residents of nearby quiet residentialstreets, the move would be the worst thing thatcould happen, damaging their properties’ valueand their neighborhoods’ peacefulness.Members of both camps turned out in force— nearly 120, all told — for a neighborhoodtown hall meeting last week in the FellowshipHall at Maple Grove United Methodist Churchabout the possible relocation of the settlementhouse.
They might have been at the same meeting, but there wasn’t much meeting of the minds.
CRC representatives wanted the residentsto hear about the services and programs theyoffer to the less fortunate and the elderly in thecommunity, as well as the need to find morespace and consolidate operations in one loca-tion.
The residents just wanted to hear that theywere taking all that someplace else.Although many of those who spoke againstthe potential of the CRC purchasing and ren-ovating the property at 65 Ceramic Drive wereat pains to say how much they respect and sup-port the work done by the organization, theyraised serious concerns and objections abouttraffic congestion, parking problems and safetyif the move becomes reality.“Why don’t you move if it’s unsafe?” WestCooke Road resident Joe Motil demanded atone point of those expressing worries. He went on to compare the brouhaha overthe potential CRC purchase of the property —which officials said they are not even certainat this point they can afford to do — to the
