July 1987

Dear Members,

As usual I've been typing the Newsletter backwards - starting at things like the Salesand Wants, simply because they take the longest to do. This time they have seemedendless, but perhaps this is because so many of them were difficult to read! Pleasemake all such advertisements easily read ...... print it all out if necessary. To do onewon't take very long for you, but to read 2i or more takes ages for me!

Grouse over - on with the reports and other news.

The Cover picture - taken by Derrey Ferdinando - is of the Chairman's perpetualrestoration Tommy. As many of you will know, this has been rather a protracted projectbut finally, like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, Tommy has taken to the roadsat last, The driver in the photograph is the Club Show Officer, Andrew Cross, comingfrom the sublime to the ridiculous (or vice versa) having just been driving a V8 Ninetyround David Bowver's Overlander Off Road Course. (It was all right for him - he didn'thave to clean it afterwards - expecially when it had arrived home after many milesbaking the mud under the bonnet - the VS, I mean!)

A REPEAT WARNING

David Leather, bringing his beautiful 80' Station Wagon down to the National Rally, hadalmost arrived when disaster struck. A blade fractured off the fan and smashed intothe radiator, so that he had to be towed in.

Inspection of the fan - the pressed steel type spot welded together - showed othercracks at the points where the blades join. We printed a warning some time ago fromStafford Dovey about this problem, which is surprisingly common.

It's not much work to take the fan off and insoect it carefully. If there are crackspresent have them dealt with now. Radiators - especially if they are the early oneslike David Leather's - are expensive. Don't put yours at risk!

THE NATIONAL CLASSIC MOTOR SHOW

Held at the N.E.C. near Birmingham over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, the NationalClassic Motor Show is one of the largest of the indoor shows. It was, as always, amost enjoyable weekend with many Clubs exhibiting, as well as an increasing number ofclassic car dealers who had vehicles for sale.

We were fortunate in having a prominent stand near the Autojumble, and this year wereable to fit in five vehicles as well as our photographic and Club Shop displays. Thetwo B0" on the stand were both 1949 models and were owned by Terry Poole and PeterHughes. Also there was my own 86" tilt, David Bowyer's 86 Station Wagon which waspropped up at a suitable angle with ropes round the winch to illustrate a Land Rover inaction, and finally Peter Hughes 88" with it's 3/4 tilt.

Over the weekend we were able to attract several new members, as well as meeting manyexisting members who were visiting the show.

EMBSAY STATION 5th SERIES ONE GATHERING SUNDAY 26th APRIL 1987

Yet again this Rally proved to be an enjoyable event. The weather was glorious.which obviously helped. There were 26 Land Rovers on display - some even arrivingbefore 18 am when the event started. One interesting vehicle belonged to ColinClayton from Burnley, Lance - a 1955 86" hardtop which came from the RAF with 42,90on the clock. It is now bright yellow, with illuminated Interflora signs on top, ashe has converted it into a flower delivery Land Rover! Also on display was a 1969LHD Forward Control 110 truck in grey, belonging to Clive MacDonald Smith of Fadmoor,Yorks. It is complete with winch.

Prizes were awarded for the various classes as follows:MOST ORIGINAL: Harvey Griffiths of Dldham. 1951 B0 tilt. 681 HAV - won the

Embsay Station Shield.BEST IN EVERYDAY USE: Jean Collins, Burnley. 1952 80" tilt. KSP 986 - won the

Ribblesdale Motors Trophy (Her husband has an 89', her son an 68")BEST B0": J.Sypesteyn. 1959 88" tilt. Light Green. ED 9265BEST 86": John Robinson, Cleveleys, Lancs. 1955 86" Station Wagon. Blue. ROC

Thanks are due to all the Clubs and Trade Stands which turned up and helped the eventalong. Also to Ken Poole, Ivor Ramsden, Alan Rogerson for their help and assistancein judging these fine vehicles. Also to Embsay Station who donated a superb prizeas weil as complimentary tickets to each entrant - and to Off Road Action Magazinetor showing an interest in this event.

FIRSt OVERLAND

You may nave read the book by Tim Slessor about the Oxford ane Cambridge UniversitiesExpedition overland to Singapore. Apparently one of the two 86" Station Wagons wentout to Ascension Island afterwards. I wonder if it is still there? I have been intouch with both Tim Slessor and Anthony Barrington Brown (who took the photographs)and hope to be able to publish more information about the vehicles, and somephotographs also in future Newsletters. Watch this space - I suppose!

Page 5: ,ThmLVIS//. #A rr- 5g£DSONE 1r L'TLDL CILUB · 4/26/1987  · classic car dealers who had vehicles for sale. We were fortunate in having a prominent stand near the Autojumble, and

38/3FIRST IMPRESSIONS ON A RESTORED 81'

Just to put the record straight - the restoration of Tommy did not take a matter of a fewweeks, as one person at the National Rally misheard! What I had said was that just afortnight before the Rally the vehicle had no bodywork on apart from the bulkhead, andthat none of the missing bodywork was painted at that stage. Everything else had beenrebuilt or restored over the past seven years - yes, SEVEN years, just to encourage thoseof you who worry that your rebuild is taking rather long. Mind you, it was a bit of apanic to get everything ready in time (a bit!) - and the MOT was passed (after reflectorswere fitted and the brakes adjusted) with no door tops or tilt fitted.

We set out for the National Rally with just 32 miles on the clock and the hope that allwould go well. After so long I Just hoped that I had not forgotton to tighten, adjust orlubricate anything vital. However, all went well, and I was interested to discover howdifferent the E0" is in comparison to the 86" (and between a canvas topped Land Rover withno sound-proofing and a soundproofed Station Wagon)

The obvious difference is the smallness of the vehicle and it's excellent turning circle.... and it's slowness, which was largely due to a light welly as the engine was being runin. The visibility is dreadful, particularly with the original pattern tilt. As youwill see from the photograph elsewhere of THY 157, the tilt is quite different from thefamiliar pattern - even to the point of having gauze in the back windows instead of clearplastic. Surprisingly the gauze gives good visibility, but the wrap round sides (like ahardtop) take some getting used to, and the whole affair is not at all wind or dust proof.

The changes in the tilt and tilt sticks were made for the following reasons: The hoopswere given curved tops because the flat top ones allow a pool of water to collect in themiddle of the canvas when it rains. The straps at the sides were changed to loops to holdthe canvas more tightly against the sides of the rear body. The rear curtain was madefull width to help improve the rear view, and the bottom edge was given loops and the sideattachments went into pockets to make the whole tilt more dust proof. No doubt the gauzefractured fairly quickly if the rear curtain was constantly folded up, and so was replacedfirst of all by perspex and then by plastic. Finally, an extra flap was sewn inwhere the top of the door closes to prevent rain dribbling in. As with so much Roverdid, when they put faults right they made a good job of it. Later on, (1949) thetailgate was given sealing rubbers for the same reason of dust proofing.

Other changes make a great deal of sense. The headlights came out from behind the grillso that they could be cleaned easily. The candle power is feeble enough as it is withoutbeing weakened by a layer of grime! The spade seat backs give surprisingly goodsupport, but produce plenty of aches on a long journey, and of course the later foldingseat backs enable the seats to be protected from rain if the top is off. Folded down, they give a more flexible loading space.

There are lots of other things which were improved when the B6" was brought in - the pedalarrangement and adjusters for clutch and brake; the door handles and door tops; the late 2litre oil filter becoming full flow and easily accessible; a stronger rear body floorwithout a spare wheel well, and much more space. Having said that, my immediate reactionwas that no way would I ever want to restore another 8" - the 86" being a much bettervehicle in my opinion. However, with some 700 miles on the clock now the 82" is certainlyaddictive, and I wouldn't want to held to that former opinion too firmly!

The highlight of our near 300 mile jaunt was the opportunity to try Tommy out on the dryparts of David Bowyer's Overiander Off Road Centre. As we clambered over the mounds andup the steep slopes I knew for certain just why I had gone to such lengths and spent somuch time in the restoration. This is what Land Rovers are for! As we came down theslopes in low ratio first - heart in mouth - I knew for certain why the Rover Car Cochanged the Free Wheel arrangement of the gearbox for the now familiar pattern. Thefreewheel over-run allows the front wheels to do just that, and we swooped frighteninglydown two of the inclines. Visions of bent chassis and airborne pieces of bodywork flashedthrough my mind I tried everything I could to slow down. The question - which none ofus there could answer - is: is there something I was doing wrong, or is that really whatdoes happen with the freewheel box on REALLY steep inclines? I know that it is possible

Page 6: ,ThmLVIS//. #A rr- 5g£DSONE 1r L'TLDL CILUB · 4/26/1987  · classic car dealers who had vehicles for sale. We were fortunate in having a prominent stand near the Autojumble, and

to keep the front drive enoaged if the engine revs are kept up - but that doesn'tnecessarily help on a very steep downhill incline. I want to travel down SLOWLY andgently ..... and safely.

We also had some fun on the road hitting a diagonal bump which set up a mighty front wheelwobble. I have read about this happening, which is due to a combination of taper bearingstop and bottom of the swivel pins ( instead of having the cone and spring damping at thetop) and the front spring shackles at the front, as well as the steering arms. With thesefactors together there is no damping effect at all, and quite a lot of flexibility. Itwill be interesting to see what tyre wear will be like. Service Bulletin Fl of March 9th1958 notes the change to the cone and spring swivel pin damping from Land Rover 86112281and suggests that a convenient time to convert earlier vehicles would be at a routinefront axle overhaul. (Was there such a thing as a routine front axle overhaul for themajority of Land Rovers?) The change to rear shackles for the front springs came in atvehicle 86113538. For anyone restoring an early 88" for regular use on the road I don'tthink I would recommend fitting the original bearings top and bottom of the swivels evenif the original swivel pins and steering levers are there. The wheel wobble can be verydisconcerting, and at times the steering is very light. The later pattern spring and conebearing was introduced for very good reason - and the whole apparatus is hidden anyway.

Having said all that, aren't the 88 Land Rovers fun to drive - especially when open.I've never driven an open Land Rover for any distance before, and it's great!

l1th BROMLEY PAGEANT OF MOTORING

Sunday 28th June was one of the hottest days of the year so far, certainly in Bromley,Kent, and this added to the enjoyment of what is claimed to be the biggest Classic CarShow in Britain. Almost 2,088 vehicles of all types were on display, from the oldest tothe newest, and from standard to very modified, including military and commercialvehicles.

As well as the individual entries there were 101 Club Stands - ours being on of these. Our stand was situated right next to the main arena where various events were heldthroughout the day. We had three vehicles on display: an ex WD 1949 80" belonging toKeith Huck, a 1954 86* brought along by Barry Pierce and my own 1955 86".

Apart from the vehicles on display there was an extensive autojumble and other displaysof stationary and steam engines. Altogether a thoroughly enjoyable day well worth all thehard work obviously put in by the organisers - Practical Classics Magazine.

ROVER SPORTS RESISTER - ASHTON COURT RALLY

Once again the R.S.R. invited Series One Club members to their Bristol area rally, held inthe grounds of Ashton Court on 17th May. Despite the poor weather there was a goodturnout of vehicles with classes for all types of Rovers, Land Rovers and other vehicles -in all more than 188.

The trophy for Best Land Rover was awarded to Mike Collingbourne for his 1951 88" whichwas loohing very smart following a rebuild. With so many members in the area perhaps wewill see more Land Rovers at next year's Rally (probably 16th May) when I am sure you willreceive a warm welcome from the R.S.R. at this friendly and informal event.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING REPORT

The AGM took place at the National Rally this year - on Saturday 23rd May - in theOverlander Marquee. This meeting followed a short joint meeting of this Club and theLand Rover Register 1947-1951, with Tony Hutchings in the chair, to discuss possibleways of celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the launch of the Land Rover in 1988.It was agreed that it would be a good idea to have an event, but that there would betoo many members of both Clubs wanting to take part to make a 'Run' feasible. The351h Anniversary Run from Solihull to Anglesey was near the limits of what the Policewould permit, and there were just under 70 vehicles then.

It was suggested that there should be a 'meeting' at Llandovery - where early LandRovers were tested - aand that there should be events going on for the many entrantsonce they have arrived. It seemed likely that groups of Series Ones would traveltogether from a number of gathering points around the country.

Everyone was very happy that Tony Hutchings and David Bowyer should process the plansand that Club members would be notified once there were definite details.

So to the AM There were 13 members present, with apologies received from JohnMajor, Andrew Cameron, John Gopsill and John Smith. The Chairman welcomed everyoneand expressed his thanks for all the suoport and assistance given to the Club duringthe past year.David Bowyer, Secretary, reported that a constant stream of enquiries come in, notall of which relate to new members, although there were many seeking help andinformation. David was thanked for all his hard work.

The Accounts were presented, their adoption proposed, and unamimously accepted withgrateful thanks to John Major for all his efforts. John had tendered his resignationdue to the pressure of work, and this was accepted with regret, and it was noted thatDavid Came had volunteered to take over.

The Membership Secretary. John Gopsill, said in his report that 4.4 new membersjoined every week during the year. He pointed out that just ONE reminder is sent toeach member one month before their subscription is due for renewal, and thankedeveryone (over 58%) who paid before renewal was due. There is just 3 months gracebefore membership lapses, and then to re-join means paying the £1.58 extra enrollmentfee. IT was agreed that subscriptions should remain as at present.John spends many hours on Club business, and his work is quite invaluable. Withouthis help the Club would grind to a halt.

The Club Shop report showed that there was a healthy balance, and that stocks overthe year had increased. There is no" twice as mucn sold at Shows as through MailOrder, although the latter tends to fluctuate seasonally. THanks were expressed toJamie Fairchild and to Andrew Cross who handles sales at Shows.

Andrew Cross reported a very successful year at many different shows, involving moremembers and their vehicles than before. He pointed out that this was one of the bestways of promoting the Club, and he thanked everyone for their help in bringingvehicles and in manning the stand (Continued on next page.....A .P.L..I.....TT...... . .. 21.. ... .APPLICATION FORM FOR 4 X 4 MEETING AT TOP FARM 12-13 SEPTEMBER

ASH eor ontinued

Mention was made of the present Club Caravan, that it is likely to have a limitedlife, and that thought should be given to a future replacement. What would be idealwould be a purpose built all aluminium caravan/display unit, with the facility forrunning a chassis inside for transportation.

John Smith - who is preparing a new book about the Series One Land Rover (Having seena draft I can assure you that it will be packed with information and photos - much ofit new), has been in touch with the family of Maurice Wilks during his research, andhe proposed that we invite his son Stephen Wilks, who has been very helpful, tobecome President of the Series One Club. This was unanimously agreed.

The Officers and Area Representatives as detailed inside the front cover wereproposed, seconded and duly elected. THanks were expressed to David Bowyer for thehospitality of his marquee, and to all on the Committee for their work during theyear.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? SKC 68 was a Police 864 Hardtop featured in an old sag. of the1959's. BB RBM is a 187" with truck cab and what is described an a ruddy greatRSJ as front bumper: Mrs and Mrs Delarre sold her in 1983 and would be happy to getin touch with the new owner - apparently he or she may be a Club Member!

LUKE MACDONALD bought his Land Rover in Scotland for just £35 before he had evenpassed his driving test, and now, after doing a complete rebuild, uses it daily. Heis happy to offer any advice to anyone trying to attempt what he has done.

That's it then. Next Newsletter out in September (earlyish with a bit of luck!).

THE ALTERNATIVE ROVER HARDTOP?

BSV 133 was spotted at the National Rally with an odd hardtop - where the gutteringonly goes across the tops of the doors, and the three ribs on the roof have holes inthem. Great discussions ensued as to whether it was genuine. Well, look at theother photographs - all showing identical hardtops - all on vehicles of similar age (1952ish)

John Knowles, who owns the vehicle in the bottom lefthand corner, has a history withhis, which indicates that the Hardtop IS genuine Rover. Can anyone out there help?

Interestingly, the Parts Catalogue (4051) for the 1948-53 models, only shows the TruckCab and Hardtop for export only (with tropical roofs), although the Fire Tender isshown with a truck cab as standard. The fourth reissue of March 1953 is quite clear onthis - showing the familiar pattern of hardtop. Does this mean that Hardtops were notavailable before 1952/3?On page 86 of James Taylor's book 'The Land Rover 1948-1984' there is a picture of aprototype with similar pierced ribs on the roof, with straps through them for securinglight loads - camouflage netting etc? - on the roof.
