THORNLIEBANK PARISH CHURCH
ORBIT – MARCH 2017
Thornliebank Parish Church of Scotland
Scottish Charity No SC008426
Letter from the Manse - March 2017
Dear Friends
The theme of my last letter from the manse was the need for rest, and I acknowledged the
hard work that had been going on in Thornliebank over the years. This rest that I spoke of was
not simply a time of inactivity but a time to seek God in prayer and to recharge our spiritual
batteries and I hope we have been managing to do this.
The past couple of months have seen people put down tasks and others take on new tasks
and Katherine Scott has handed the Session Clerk’s role onto Fiona Richardson, June Fraser
has made way for Rona Lannigan to become our new halls convenor and Trish Wilson has
taken on the role of roll keeper (boom boom!). On behalf of the congregation I thank
Katherine, June and Mary Tonner for their years of faithful service to their respective offices
and I pray every blessing for Fiona, Rona and Trish as they continue the excellent work that
has been done. Mary Tonner is still serving as treasurer and doing an excellent job although
she really needs an assistant, and despite our advertising on a weekly basis for someone to
come forward, we are still hoping there is someone among you who will help Mary.
Of course, there are countless others who work away tirelessly in the background who are
often never noticed and our church could not operate without these faithful servants, you
know who you are and we value you! Please continue to read the situations vacant notice in
our intimation sheet and prayerfully consider if you can offer your services, we would be
delighted to have your help.
Easter is just around the corner and with it comes spring which is a season of new life. Please
pray that we see new life in our congregation and may God deepen your faith and give you
direction. For the eagle eyed among you, you will know that I always sign of these letters by
saying that if you or anyone you know would like prayer or a chat; please speak to me.
With blessings and best wishes
Mike Gargrave
Thought for the Month – Easter 2017
Easter says you can put truth in a grave, but it won't stay there.
Clarence W. Hall
The resurrection gives my life meaning and direction and the opportunity
to start over no matter what my circumstances.
Robert Flatt
Outside of the cross of Jesus Christ, there is no hope in this world. That
cross and resurrection at the core of the Gospel is the only hope for humanity.
Wherever you go, ask God for wisdom on how to get that Gospel in, even in
the toughest situations of life.
Ravi Zacharias

Thornliebank Messy Church
On the 4th Sunday of the month from 4.00pm to 6.00pm
For children AND parents
with Games, Crafts, Jesus, Music and Fun!
I write this, having just returned from our preparation meeting for
our 4th Messy Church which will be on Sunday, 26th February, from
4pm to 6pm.
We will be looking at 'The Plagues' and exploring what God is
telling us in this series of meetings between 2 influential men namely
Moses and Pharaoh.
Given the topic our evening could be really messy...games and crafts
involving 'bugs'...it's ok the theme needn't extend to the food!
Intrigued? Then come along and join the fun, the more the merrier.

THE GUILD
We are now well into the second half of our session and
have had some excellent speakers.
Our quiz night was its usual success and the pie and beans
went ‘down a treat’..I won’t say where the guild came in the quiz but
you know the saying ..it’s the taking part that is important!
The chaplain from Braehead was an excellent speaker as was the
Trefoil Partners and Erskine hospital speakers.
Our council gift service was at the beginning of December and we
wrapped 248 parcels for nine homes, 200 pairs of socks for Lodging
House Mission and 100 pairs of socks plus hats and gloves for the
Street Pastors to distribute, sweets to Hazelwood School and loose
gifts to Southern General Day Unit, Preshall Trust and Grampian
Whitecraigs.
Our Christmas afternoon started with our allocation of funds and
then we had a lovely varied programme from Christine McConnell.
Our bible exploration was taken by Kathleen Millar and names of
God was a very interesting afternoon very ably presented by our own
Session Clerk Kathleen Scott. Our Stewarton friends were due to
come for lunch and listen to our own minister and Douglas Nichol’s
musical treat but unfortunately the ladies from Stewarton were
unable to come on that day, but will join us for lunch later in the
session.
Our taste and try was a great success..thanks to Isabel Welsh and
Morrisons.
We are looking forward to hearing about ‘Letters from a Desert
Rat’. A speaker from Mission International talking about Haiti
which is one of our projects.
We have still to look forward to our guest night on 6th march, Rev.
Catherine Beattie telling us of the ongoing work in Malawi and the
work of a prison chaplain.
If you are interested in hearing any of our speakers please feel free to
join us any Monday afternoon. You will be made most welcome.
From your friends in the guild.
Jean Burnett
Dear Friends
Here we are already one sixth of the way through the year. Can you
believe it? This is the time of year when, as Treasurer, I await with
trepidation the phone call from Stuart to say he wishes to go over the
previous year’s accounts. The reality is never as bad as the
expectation!
Our big expenditure last year was improvement of the projection
system, which was moved upstairs. We now have a lovely big shelf for
all our equipment to sit on. It looks very technical. We also installed
a handrail on the stairs to the gallery to help with access.
May I remind you that if you have signed up for Gift Aid you must be
paying enough income tax to cover what is reclaimed. If you have any
doubts see Marion M and she will help you out.
Lastly, if you feel that God is calling you to help with our church
finances, whether it is to help as Treasurer or to help out on a Sunday
with the counting and banking, please come and speak to me.
God bless
Mary Tonner
Treasurer
We're into a new year and as we come towards our Annual Stated
Meeting we also come to the end of the Fiscal year. Now's a good time
to take stock of our finances and in particular our giving.
Are you paying tax? If so you may be interested to know that we can
claim some of that tax back against your offerings.
So how do we do this?
1. Complete a 'Gift Aid Declaration Form'
2. Use ' Freewill Offering Envelopes' or
3. Set up a 'standing order'
4. Leave the rest to me
Please speak to Mary Tonner or myself if you would like more
information or indeed the forms to set this in motion. Happy to help.
Blessings
Marion Muirhead
LEPROSY MISSION SCOTLAND
Dear Friends, I want to thank you all for your faithfulness over the years in
giving me your used stamps both British and foreign. I was specially delighted
with the amount of lovely foreign stamps which you gave to me and I believe the
Leprosy Mission receive more money for these.
I packed two shoe boxes with your British and two smaller boxes with the
foreign stamps, labelling all the boxes with our Church name. I delivered them
to Linda Todd (Chief Executive) who readily agreed to deliver them to Stirling
for me, for which I was very grateful. I received a letter of acknowledgement
from The Leprosy Mission which I am pleased to enclose.
Thanking you once again.
Love & Blessings
