Statesville Brick Continues a Tradition NCMCA President Bob Gates (left) and Terry Ward were among the Western Carolina and Metrolina Chapter members who participated in a summer tradition that dates back to the 1960’s. In June, Statesville Brick Company hosted the two local NCMCA Chapters at their Sunset Point conference center on the water near Lake Norman State Park. Everyone grilled their own steak on a massive barbecue grill built for just that purpose. Photograph by Carl Moser

Opportunity Is Always KnockingAs business owners, we are constantly chal-

lenged with decisions to make. Do we bid that next project in a new geographical area or do we concentrate on projects close to home? We could really use a new forklift, mixer, or scaffolding or do we make do with what we have and keep repairing or “band aiding” it? Do we buy that shiny new truck or make do and put another 100,000 miles on that old Ford, Chevy or Ram? Not all things last as long as Ram (Dodge) unfortunately. Life is full of decisions and choices. I like to think of them as opportunities.

Just this past Monday, August 21, 2017, we all had the opportunity to witness one of God’s true miraculous events. The solar eclipse brought our area to a brief pause and a moment to experience something awesome. For that day and moment millions of us had the opportunity to come to-gether as one.

As the summer of 2017 comes to a close, I look back on the summer’s events in our own NCMCA. I lost count of all the many masonry skills contests we, as an association have been involved in. Our support of these events continues to highlight the opportunities we offer in this industry. Our cham-pions like Matt Cash, Chet Huntley, Luis Marquez, Jamis Huntley, Kelby Thornton, Jesse Baker, Nataly Razzo and Aaron Jones continue to represent us well. Kelby goes back to Louisville and does it again as National Champion. Congratulations to you all!

Thank you to all our chapters and their lead-ers who through the summer have continued to

give our members opportunities to come together and be involved. Many of you across the state have continued to be committed to the opportunities that our association offers.

As we move forward into the fall, we see tremen-dous opportunities. Silica education and training is continuing to be offered through MCAA. A new round of NCMCA certification classes begin in October. The SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 Qualifier at Tucker-Kirby will also take place in October. Fastest Trowel on the Block will take place at Carolina Stalite in Novem-ber. Another Masonry Education Day at Carolina Stalite will also be on the same date in November. Mount Pleasant High School will host our first work force “Power Block” sessions starting in September and running through December. Our association golf tournament, headed for many years by David McQueen, comes up at the end of September. The CMU check off program continues to gain momen-tum towards eventual passing. We continue to add members and I thank those who continue to recruit for this association.

Our association board meeting is September 13 in Greensboro and I encourage all of you to take the opportunity to attend and be a part of our board’s decision making process. We have important deci-sions to consider.

As you can see, we have many ways to be involved in our association in the masonry industry. I chal-lenge each of you to make a difference (M.A.D.) and answer the door when opportunity knocks.

Mt. Pleasant High School “Power Block” Project

Several Metrolina Chapter area NCMCA masonry contractors are working with the Southeastern Con-crete Masonry Association (SCMA) and the staff at Mount Pleasant High School on a masonry work-force development initiative at the school.

Former masonry instructor Ryan Shaver, now with Johnson Concrete Products, will be coordinat-ing six hour-long sessions conducted during the school day during the 2017 fall semester to introduce students to all aspects of the masonry industry, culminating with a “Career Fair” recruitment event for the last session in December.

The Wednesday sessions, called “Power Blocks,” are set for September 27, October 11 and 25, Novem-ber 8 and 29, and December 13.

For additional information and to learn how you can participate, contact Ryan Shaver (704) 791-5340 [email protected]

The effort at Mount Pleasant could be a pilot program for implementation at other schools around the state.

Company in Charlotte. For information, Steve Bell (704) 294-5231. It will be a banner year for the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500

program by setting a record high total of 24 qualifier rounds that will take place in 20 U.S. cities and four Canadian provinces. The winners of each regional competition will earn a spot to compete in the 2018 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 World Championship held at the 2018 World of Concrete trade show in Las Vegas on January 24th.

North Carolina’s own Matt Cash won the 2017 BL500 and will defend his title in 2018.

Certification Classes Begin in October

A new series of NCMCA Certification Program classes will begin this fall.

Module One “Occupational Safety Management” with instructor Bill Parsons is set for Thursday October 26 fol- lowed by Module 2 “Basics of M a s o n r y Materials” on Thurs-d a y N o - vember 16, and Mod- ule Three “ Mo r ta r, G r o u t & T e s t i n g ” on Tuesday December 12 with the rest of the eleven classes scheduled for the next twelve to thirteen months in 2018. Watch your email and ncmca.com for details and registration information.

The first three classes are required for all certifica-tion applicants.

Masonry Quality Institute (MQI) instructed by Michael Callahan will be presented as part of the NCMCA Masonry Contractors Certification Program class series February 21 & 22, 2018. MQI is a re-quired class for NCMCA Certified Masonry Executive (CME) status and is an elective for Certified Masonry Professional (CMP) status. MQI can also serve as continuing education for certified individuals who have not previously participated in MQI.

MQI is expensive and required by only individuals seeking CME status. MQI may not be offered in every class series. It is strongly advised that anyone who may consider CME status now or in the future participate when MQI is presented in February.

Module One “Occupational Safety Management” may be used for continuing education credit regard-less of how many times the class has been attended.

We anticipate most, if not all, of the classes will be held at McGee Brothers Company in Greensboro. Watch your email and ncmca.com for details and registration information.

2017-2018 Membership Directory Distributed

Some 1,600 copies of the 2017-2018 NCMCA Membership directory have been printed with most of them already distributed to members, architects, general contractors, masonry instructors and friends of the Association. A few extras remain.

Click here to view the directory on-linehttp://issuu.com/ncmca/docs/

ncmca_2017-2018_membership_directorThe cover of this year’s book features the after-

math of the March apartment construction fire in Raleigh. As is the custom, we feature work by a contractor member firm on the cover and this issue is no exception. The CMU stairwells and elevator shafts of the project were about all that was left the morning after. Pinnacle Masonry in Cary built those structures. “Wood burns. Masonry does not.”

Submit photographs for consideration for the cover of the 2018-2019 directory by April 1, 2018. High-resolution photographs should be vertically oriented and include complete details about the photograph and the project.

Eleanor Upton PassesNCMCA’s first executive manager, Eleanor Flow-

ers Upton, passed away June 11th after a brief and unexpected illness. She was 82 and lived in Raleigh.

Along with her husband Robert, who died in 2016, Ms. Upton and her firm, Upton Associates in Raleigh, managed the Associa-tion from shortly after its inception in the early seventies until late 1997.

Bob Merrill was NC-MCA’s fourth president when Mrs . Upton was hired and says, “It was a big change in the association when we hired Eleanor. It was an important mover for us. NCMCA wouldn’t have still existed if we hadn’t hired her. It would have folded.”

At the 1998 NCMCA convention banquet in Char-lotte, then-president Doug Burton announced that the NCMCA award for outstanding service by associ-ate members would from that day forward be known as the “Eleanor Flowers Upton” award.

Eleanor spent most of her career in the hospital-ity and association management industry, forming Upton Associates, a meeting and association man-agement firm, in 1976. Eleanor worked with Bob, daughter Barbara, and later son-in-law Carlton Geiger, until she and Bob retired in 2012.

Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Barbara Upton Geiger, and son-in-law, Carlton and their children Robert and Margaret; son, Mark Nelson, daughter-in-law, Angie, and their children Ryan and Stephen. Eleanor also leaves siblings, Janie Williams ( Jay), Barbara Taylor, Fred Flowers ( Joan) and Steve Flowers (Kathy.)

The family suggests memorial donations to Christ Episcopal Church, PO Box 25759, Raleigh NC 27611-5778 or the Basil Tucker Scholarship Fund, 3733 Benson Drive, Raleigh NC 27609.
