One day, while reading about the Holy islands around Britain, I realised that Beulah had more than a passing link with three of them. Our Beulah Family tentacles have embraced three: Iona, Lindisfarne and Caldey. Iona, off the west coast of Scotland, was settled in 563 AD by the Irish missionary, St. Columba, and twelve companions, who established a monastery intending to convert the North of England to Christianity. It flourished until attacked by the Vikings in 800 AD, then declined until 1200. Later, a Benedictine Abbey was founded on the site. Our links to Iona are that John Bell spent a day at Beulah when Ken Graham was our Minister. Also, Dewi Lewis and Valerie met at Iona, and named their daughter Iona. Lindisfarne was founded by St. Aidan of Iona, in 643 AD. It also flourished until destroyed by Danish Vikings in 875 AD. In 664 AD, the monastery’s most famous Bishop, Cuthbert, retreated as a hermit on Farne Island. The Lindisfarne Gospels were illuminated her under Bishop Eadfrith around 690 AD. The Beulah ‘link’ is in a holiday cottage owned by Ken Graham where, over the years, many of the Beulah Family have stayed, and enjoyed the lovely views across the sweeping bay towards Lindisfarne. Caldey Island’s Abbey was founded by Cistercian Monks in the 5th century, by Pino, a follower of St. Illtyd. Groups from Beulah visit this Holy island regularly for prayer and worship, and this Retreat has become a favourite annual event. Long may the Beulah Family continue its outward Christian embrace. One of the great benefits tome of joining with All Saints andBethany for services is the insightand knowledge that we gain fromexperiencing each others’traditions. The joint Communionin February was in All Saints andit happened to be Candlemas, afeast about which I knew verylittle. At the end of the service weall gathered around the crib andwatched while its lights and thatof the epiphany star were turnedoff. Each holding a candle toremind us that we should eachshine with the light of Christ’slove, we followed a cross, rightaround the sanctuary to the font. There, standing in front of thecross, all the lights were turnedoff; we blew out our candles andremained in darkness for the finalprayers. I found this very moving, perhaps a reminder that we, likeJesus, cannot remain inBethlehem, but must travel on.We were already getting ready forLent, and setting our facestowards Jerusalem and the cross.

Soon, we will have theopportunity to share in anothertradition at All Saints, as on AshWednesday we are invited tomark the beginning of Lent byjoining them for their services ofthe imposition of the ashes.

On Wednesdays during Lentwe will be able to join with friendsfrom the other URCs in Cardiff forLent Reflections based aroundPaul’s letter to the Galatians. I amgrateful to those who haveorganised these for us, which willbe held alternately in City URCand Beulah. This is a greatopportunity to join together indiscussion and reflection, and allare welcome to join in wheneverpossible.

I would also like to thank thegroup who have worked onpreparing worship in Lent. Theoverall theme will bePerspectives on the Cross andwe will be using art work to help

CHURCH NOTESus in our thinking and reflectingthrough the season. This groupbegan their preparation bythinking about what we valuemost about Lent and whatbenefits might emerge for us asindividuals and as church. Theseare some of the things thatpeople said: time to meditate andreflect; contemplation and self-examination (‘taking spiritualstock’); discussion with others;waiting and listening; ‘anemotional journey’; greatersharing; chance to follow thewhole journey with Jesus;deepening understanding andfaith in God.

We will also be encouragingpeople to use the Christian Aid‘Count your blessings’ materials. This year’s theme is ‘Rise upagainst Climate Change’ anduses the Lenten themes ofawareness, repentance, forgiveness, reconciliation, transformation and blessing todeepen our understanding of thedifficulties facing a small fishingcommunity in the Philippines. We hope that through the use ofthese materials, our worship, theLent study groups and privatereading and prayer we will all betouched by the grace andunending love that Jesus carriedto the cross, and be nudged andinspired to share that love withothers in every way that we can.

As many of you may know, I have spent three summers atSanyu Babies’ Home in Uganda. I am planning to return thissummer and stay for a longer time (1-2 years is the currentestimate…).

In previous years I have done some fundraising to supportvarious projects at the home including re-tiling a room, buyingplay resources such as a parachute, taking the children on anouting (a treat is usually just sitting at the gate watching thetraffic go by) and having two memorial benches made toremember all the babies from Sanyu who have passed away.Due to the longer trip this time I am organising severalfundraising events to raise as much money as possible to takewith me. The Barn Dance we held in January was great fun andraised lots of money…. thank you to everyone who supportedit!

On Saturday 23rd March we will be having a family friendlyfundraising quiz in the Canolfan from 7-10pm. Entry will befree but donations gladly welcomed. You can either come as ateam or a solo participant and teams can be made on the night. The evening will include food so please let us know if you areplanning to attend for catering purposes

Hope to see you there!Emily (and the rest of the Cheer Family)

Multumesc- Thank you!

On behalf of myself, my friendAncuta, her pastor husband,Beni and children in Navodari,Romania can I say thank you toall of my Beulah family thatdonated sweets beforeChristmas.

I was overwhelmed by theamount of sweets given andthank you really doesn't seemenough.

Once collected I sent them inwith clothes and other Christmasgifts that I had collected.  Theyleft Cardiff by coach and took abit longer than usual to arrivewith Ancuta.  I was beginning toworry slightly as the boxes hadn'tarrived but was overjoyed toreceive a message on Christmasmorning to say they hadarrived  that  morning - a trueChristmas blessing for thechildren!

The photo shows some of thechildren receiving clothesand  sweets - something theyrarely get.  They are truly blessedand grateful to receive gifts.

As you know these people arevery close to my heart and all Ican say is thank you.

Love,Denise

FLOWING STREAMS,BRINGING LIFE

This theme, based on thewords of Ezekiel 47.7-9, hasbeen adopted by Beulah for2019.

Alun Jones has written ahymn and some openingwords which have been usedin worship a couple of timesfor ‘theme’ services.

How to develop the themebeyond worship wasdiscussed at the JanuaryElders’ Meeting, and it wassuggested that this shouldform the basis of ChurchMeeting in February, which iswhat we did on February 17.

The Meeting divided intogroups and discussed how thetheme could be used indifferent aspects of churchlife. There was lots ofanimated discussion, and anamazing number of ideasgenerated. These will now becollated by a small group andcommon threads found forfurther thought.

It’s great to have the ideas– now all we need is people toput them into practice! Somethings will fall naturally todifferent groups within thechurch but it would be good toinvolve different people too –so please look out for appealsfor help with organising someof the suggestions!

Many thanks to all thosewho took part in this meeting, which has given us lots of foodfor thought about how we canbring the 2019 theme to life.

Exploring our Faith

‘Holy Habits’Last year we purchased a few copies of Andrew Roberts’ book, which a number of people have used for private study and inpreparing worship when we started thinking about ‘Walking theWay’, the URC discipleship initiative.Alongside the book, there are 12 booklets which develop practicalideas. The idea is that there are “holy habits” which we canencourage and practise. The booklets cover: Biblical Teaching, Serving, Fellowship,Eating Together, Breaking Bread, Gladness & Generosity,Prayer, Worship, Sharing Resources, Making More DisciplesLater in the year we hope to set up a discussion group to explorethese in more detail, but meanwhile, if you would like to read thebook, please ask Louise for a copy.

StepwiseThis is the new development programme from the URC.Individuals from different churches can meet together for moreformal study and learning and practical activities. It is for localleaders, lay preachers, elders, but also for anyone who wouldlike to learn with others and offers a chance to meet people fromother churches. It isn’t only for people who feel a vocation to someform of leadership. For more information, there are leaflets in theporch, or visit: urc.org.uk/stepwise

Three Mountains to FreedomLent reflections with URC churches in Cardiff

Come along to get to know people from other churches and your own, in a friendly, informal atmosphere.Come to explore ideas about living Christian faith in Cardiff. Come for all five or for just one session…

Our sessions will draw on the book ‘Three Mountains to Freedom’, by John Dudley Davies, which takes apractical look at some themes in St Paul’s letter to the Galatians.

We will meet on Wednesday evenings from 7.30 to 9 pm. Here is a broad itinerary:

Wednesday 13th March, Beulah URC The Foothills Galatians 1: 1 – 24. What type ofchurch are we, and what is our story? What is the relationship between churches which are upholders oftradition and those on the edge, pushing boundaries?

Wednesday 20th March, City URC Mount Faith Galatians 2: 1 – 21. Where doescultural tradition divide us or become a barrier to faith? Faith in what?

Wednesday 27th March, Beulah URC Mount Unity Galatians 3: 26 – 4:7. How inclusiveis our church? Who’s ‘in’ and who’s ‘out’? What would be needed for our nation to be truly One Nation?

Wednesday 3rd April, City URC Mount Freedom Galatians 5.: 1- 15.What does it mean to be free in Christ? Is Christ enough?

Wednesday 10th April, Beulah URC Back on level ground Galatians 5:16 – 6:10.Living in the Spirit. What messages do we have to share with our church, and our community? What liesahead for our own pilgrimage?

You are encouraged, if you wish, to get and read a copy of the book beforehand, although this is not essential. You are also encouraged to read through the letter to the Galatians and to bring a Bible to the session.

There will be a follow up meeting on Wednesday 8th May at City URC to discuss the continuation of thegroup, perhaps on a monthly basis and hosted by whichever churches wish to participate.

Any queries, contact Fiona Liddell or Alison Mcqueen

Colin Grimes,

RAGS(This poem was submitted by Betty Hulston, who remembersreciting it at an Anniversary service in her church when she wasa teenager. Betty)

He wasn’t a handsome doggy,But this I can truthfully say,He was one of the best when he answered the test,When I needed him most one day.His coat was all coarse and scraggyAnd just like a doormat, indeed,And my friends used to say, in their humorous way,‘He’s one of the Chippendale breed’.For his legs in front were twistedAnd turned out from left and to right; And his eyes used to squint with an uncertain glintFor Rags had but very poor sight. But under his coat so scraggyLay a heart of the purest gold,For my faithful friend proved his love in the end. Here’s the story will soon be told.

We were walking out one eveningWhen I slipped on top of the cragAnd I fell with a blow to the sea far belowAnd was followed at once by Rags.I lay on the waves unconscious,Kept up by his failing strength. He kept me afloat ‘til a rescuing boatCame up and they saved me at length. They rescued me but on lookingTo save my brave comrade as well,He had sunk ‘neath the waves to a watery grave.

‘Tis a sorrowful tale to tell,But his memory still will lingerIn my heart while God gives me breath.I will honour my friend who was true to the endFor his love was stronger than death. And oh friends, this story reminds me of one who did dieThat our souls he might win from all sorrow and sin,To live with him ever on high. All praise to our blessed Redeemer,All praise to our unfailing friend;Let us honour his name who bore all our sin and shame,And whose love is true to the end.

USING THE SCREENSTraining Workshop,

Thursday 28th Marchat 7.30pm

Huw and Marianne will leadthis workshop in the church. The training will focus on twoaspects of using the screens:

1. Huw will lead a sessionin using the actual technologyso that we have a wider poolof people with the knowledgeand confidence to set up theprojector and screens on aSunday morning. We maythen be able to have a rota forthis so we do not rely on justone or two people. This isaimed at anyone with aninterest in the technology, notjust worship leaders.

2. Marianne will lead asession in how to createPowerpoint slides which givemaximum accessibility to thecongregation reading them. This is designed particularlywith worship leaders in mind, but may be of interest toothers who use PowerPointin other areas. If you areinvolved in leading worshipwith the use of PowerPoint,we would encourage you toattend this session.
