THRIVE | Life Notebook

Welcome to the Year 2019!

To get the most out of this notebook, it is very important that you put yourself totally into it! That is, you must determine that your spiritual growth this year is your top priority. When you become all God wants you to be the results will amaze you!

1. Your God consciousness will grow.

2. Your self-confidence will increase.

3. Your impact on the lives of others will grow.

4. Your influence in your family, church, and community will expand.

5. Your spirit will have a sense of contentment for the present and an anticipation of great things in the future. Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

It is important, no matter where we are in our spiritual journey, that we strive with the Lord to be all He wants us to be, ever growing in our knowledge of Him and our service for Him. It is my prayer that this Thrive Life Notebook will help you become all God has for you to be. Have a great year,

A Quick Checklist Are You Ready to Pray? .

Are All Your Sins Confessed? Isaiah 59:1-2, “Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” 1 John 1:10, “If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”

Are All Relationships with Others Made Right? Matthew 6:14-15, “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

Are You Seeking His Will in All Things? 1 John 5:14-15, “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”

Are You Seeking to Glorify God Above All Things? John 14:13-14, “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”

Are You Depending On the Holy Spirit’s Guidance? Romans 8:26, “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

Are You Trusting God in Spite of What Seems to Be? Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Will You Praise God No Matter What? Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

THRIVE Devotional Week 1 – Lesson 1 Prepare for God’s Blessing Scripture reading Psalm 1 “Blessed is the man…[whose] delight is in the law…” What a great reminder for a brand new year. The word blessed means to be happy so God tells us in order to be happy there are certain things to avoid and certain things you can delight in. What should I avoid?

1. I need to avoid the counsel of the ungodly. We find ungodly counsel around us everywhere on television, iPad, iPhone, with the news media. If I am surrounded with ungodly counsel, I will get depressed and frustrated and I will not thrive.

2. I need to avoid standing in the way of sinners. I need to live my life differently than they live their life.

3. I need to avoid sitting in the seat of the scornful. Scornful people mock me when I determine to live the way God wants me to live.

God doesn’t just tell us what to avoid, He also tells us what to delight in. We need to delight in His Word. We need to focus on living according to His Word. That means that daily we should be in His Word and seeking His direction following His will. If I get right direction from His Word and not from the ungodly world, God gives me a promise. He promises I will be like a tree planted by rivers of water that brings forth fruit in God’s time and I will prosper. The promise to the ungodly, they will be like the shaft, unstable, blown to and fro from the wind. Let 2019 be a year where you follow the law of God and prosper.

THRIVE Devotional Week 1 – Lesson 2

Raging Heathen and a Ruling King! Scripture reading Psalm 2 “…the heathen rage…[but]…He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh”

Psalm 2 is both a prophetic psalm and a psalm filled with instruction for practical living. Here we are told that the heathen rage at the leadership of the Lord Jesus Christ. The truth of God’s Word is offensive to the lost world. It shows us that we are sinners, and the world does not want to face that truth. It shows us that there is a holy God and the world does not want to face that truth. It shows us that there is judgment coming and the world does not want to face that truth. Yet, as children of God we know we are sinners and we also know the forgiveness of our God when we humble ourselves before Him. The passage reminds us that though the heathen rage, God reigns. He is in control. Nothing shakes His kingdom. We can come to Him and ask Him to deliver the heathen into our hands and God can use us to help those that do not know God come to an understanding of Him. What a wonderful thing it is when we see our lost friends and loved ones trust Jesus as Savior. Have compassion on them today, pray for them today, and walk with the confidence today that Jesus Christ is in control. Bow before Him, worship Him, and determine to serve Him all day long through the power of His Spirit. God bless you as you put your trust in Him.

THRIVE Devotional Week 1 – Lesson 3

Keep On Praying! Scripture reading Psalm 3 “Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah. But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.” Psalm 3 is a reminder that we live in a world that despises our God. They also despise those of us who serve Him. David quotes his adversaries they say, “there is no help for him in God”. However, David reminds us in verse 3, that Jesus is our shield. He is the one that lifts up our heads. He is the one that encourages us. Satan will do everything he can to keep us from prayer. David refused to allow that to happen. David knew that strength comes from our time alone with God. The Psalmist in verse 14, says, “I cried to the Lord with my voice and he heard me out of his holy hill.” When we pray it gives us peace, so that in verse 5, David could say, “I laid me down and slept”. In verse 6, it reminds us that there is no fear with God no matter how many people stand up against me. I can cry unto the Lord and He will hear me. Make sure that you take time today to go before God and pray for your loved ones and pray for your protection. Verse 8 reminds us that, salvation belongeth unto the Lord Jesus and that He blesses His people. Prayers are a great key to the throne room of God that brings His blessing and His protection on our lives today. May you thrive with God today. God bless you.

THRIVE Devotional Week 1 – Lesson 4

Selah? Scripture reading Psalm 4 “Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer. O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah. But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him. Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord. There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.” Selah, this word is used twice in Psalm 4 and three times in Psalm 3. You will find the word used over and over in the Book of Psalm. The word Selah means to stop and think about what you just read. In our busy day, we can often times forget to stop and think about all that God has done for us. In verses 1-2, the Psalmist, David, reminds us of God’s mercy and reminds us that men do not seek His mercy but run after the things of this world. We are to stop and think about that. Then in verses 3-4, he tells us that the Lord hath set apart the godly and that we are to stand in the awe of our God. That is understand what life is really all about. Everything on this planet is temporary. We who are children of God, live forever in His presence. We need to be careful to not be wrapped up in the cares of this world, but focus on the eternal things. Our relationship with Him, our relationship with our family members, and our opportunity to serve Him. These are things that will never pass away. When we are living for ourselves, there is never any satisfaction. When we live for the Lord and others, we have purpose, we walk with confidence and we thrive. Selah, stop and think about that!

THRIVE Devotional Week 1 – Lesson 5

The Key to Blessing Is Prayer! Scripture reading Psalm 5 “I will direct my prayer unto thee…for thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous…” This chapter reminds us that we live in a wicked world surrounded by the enemies of God. However, David here cries unto God. The king of Israel, the earthly king, cries to the heavenly King, his God, and reminds him that every day, in the morning, he will hear His voice. He reminds God that he is dependent upon Him. He reminds God that God does not take pleasure in wickedness and yet there is wickedness all around him. He asked God to direct him as he is trying to do right in the midst of wickedness. Then he asked God to destroy the wicked that are around him and give him victory. In verse 11, “But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.” Joy comes through serving the Lord Jesus Christ. Joy is not a result of what is happening around us in the external world. Joy comes when we realize day by day that God is in control. When we submit to His control, then He can do marvelous things through our lives, things beyond what we can even imagine. The key to thriving in this life, is total surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ day by day. God bless you. We look forward to seeing you in church tomorrow for our first Sunday together at Liberty.

THRIVE Devotional Week 2 – Lesson 1

A God You Can Trust Scripture reading Psalm 91 “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” It is true since the time of Adam and Eve that we have lived in a sinful, fallen world. However, as believers, we have a refuge. We have a fortress. We have a great protector. We need not fear in any situation that is going on in the world, because as the Psalmist says, my trust is in God. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, the word trust means to

1) rely on the truthfulness or accuracy 2) to place confidence in or rely on 3) to hope or expect confidently

We have a God that has not failed. He is the God that has created the heavens and the Earth. He is the God that sent Jesus Christ to be our Savior. He is the God that is in control of the wind, of the rain, and the earthquakes. He is the God with whom nothing is impossible. The Psalmist says here that, if we walk with God, we abide under the shadow of the Almighty. He will protect us and He will deliver us from our enemies. Psalm 91:3-4, “Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” I don’t know what you are facing today, but I want to assure you that you can trust God. Go to Him in prayer and ask Him to take care of your needs. Believe that He is in control and you can walk throughout the day in confidence and thrive in your life for the Lord Jesus Christ. God bless you.

THRIVE Devotional Week 2 – Lesson 2

Trusting God with Who I Am Scripture reading Psalm 139 Verses 1-2, 5-6, 13-14, 16-17, “O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.” “Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.” “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” “Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!” This passage of Scripture is wonderful because it tells us that God knows all about us. In fact, it tells us God made us with all of our imperfections. The word reins literally means kidneys. The idea is, that God knows me inside and out. He created me. The height that I am. He knew the color of my eyes. He knew my entire genetic background. He knew how dark my hair would be and how long my nose would be. He knew how wide my waist would be. He knew how big my feet would be, before I was born. He made me the way He wanted me to be. He is the Potter and I am the clay. I can trust that He made me exactly the way I am supposed to be to accomplish the purpose that He has designed for me. It is wonderful that I can trust the Lord with who I am. He placed me in the family He wanted me to be in. He has surrounded me with the people He wants me to influence. He has placed me in the job I am best suited for. He has given me the talents and the abilities to perform the tasks He has called me to perform. He has done that for me and for you. God wants us to trust Him with who we are. Take time to thank God for making you the way you are and for placing you in the situation He has you in today. You can trust Him with everything about you, your size, your shape, your circumstances, your family, and every other condition in life. When we walk trusting God with who we are, we can walk in confidence and thrive in His kingdom.

THRIVE Devotional Week 2 – Lesson 3

Trusting God with My Life Situation Scripture reading Romans 8:28-29 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.” Isn’t it interesting that God knew exactly where you would be today before you were even born? According to Romans 8:28-29, God’s plan for you is that you can be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. He is working everything in your life together, that is the good things and the bad things. He is working everything together to make you more like Jesus Christ. Before the foundations of the world, God knew that of your own free will, you would receive His Son as your Lord and Savior and God. Knowing that would be the case, He predetermined that since you were going to be His son, you were going to be like His Son, Jesus Christ. Everything that happens in your life is designed by God to make you more like the person of Jesus Christ. This passage does not say that all things work together for good to everyone in the world, but for those that love God and are called according to His purpose. Everything that happens in our lives is allowed to make us more like Jesus. Sean was just a baby when his father walked out of his life to live for his own self-centered goals. Sean grew up in a fatherless home, but it was through that experience that God enabled him to have a ministry whereby he is able to minister to other fatherless people. Trust God with life circumstances and you will be a Christian that thrives.

THRIVE Devotional Week 2 – Lesson 4

Trusting God in Crisis Scripture reading Psalm 56 Psalm 56:3-4, 11, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.” “In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.” David the great king, knew what it was like to be a man of war. He knew what it was like to be a man that was persecuted. For years, under King Saul, he ran as a fugitive. Though he faced many uphill battles, David was a man who thrived in his walk with God. Why? Because he trusted God. Though he faced one crises after another, he believed God would fight for him. Psalm 56:3 says, “What time I am afraid,” It is interesting to know that David said, “I am afraid.” However, he turned his fear into trust by remembering what God had done for him in the past. By claiming God’s Word, David could move forward in victory. When we claim the promises of God, we to can thrive as Christians.

THRIVE Devotional Week 2 – Lesson 5

Trusting God When I Don’t Need Too Scripture reading Luke 12:16-21, “And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” This man was a fool. He was a rich man. He thought, I have total confidence in myself. I don’t need God. I can handle everything myself. I can take care of myself. I will handle every situation myself. I don’t need God’s instruction. I don’t need anyone. God said about this man, who trusted in himself and not God, “thou fool”. I need to trust God no matter what my situation is. Paul said, “I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry,” It is important that in every situation in life, we trust God. When we eat a meal, we should thank God for what He has given us and ask God to always supply our needs. We might think, “I don’t need to do that. I have everything I need.” We need to remind ourselves to trust God for what we have. Trusting God means believing that He is in control, in the bad times and the good times. Let’s us always recognize that what we have comes from God. Trust God even when it seems you don’t need to and you will be a Christian that thrives.

THRIVE Devotional Week 2 – Lesson 6

Trusting God with My Reputation Scripture reading Psalm 25:1-2, 20-21, “Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.” “O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee.” Great men of faith in the Bible will often be asked to do things that seem to be contrary to common sense. God asked Noah to build an ark. For many years Noah and his three sons were building an ark. The project would have looked foolish to those around him. He had to trust God with his reputation and in the end God proved trust worthy. Noah and his entire family were saved because he trusted God with his reputation. Abraham was told by God to leave Ur and to go out and look for a city whose building and foundation is God. I am sure that when he left the security of his home and moved out on faith, many would have laughed at him, and wondered about his mental condition. Yet, he trusted God. Again, God proved to be trust worthy. Jesus, God’s Son, was sent to the cross where He would suffer an agonizing death and be mocked as He hung there in excruciating pain to pay for your sin and mine. Philippians says, that because of that He has been given a name above all names and that at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess, that He is Lord to the glory of God the Father. The Bible says that God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. Trusting God is humbling ourselves before Him. Believing Him, that if we obey Him, we will see His reward. You can trust God with your reputation, and when you do, in the end you will thrive. No Christian will ever thrive in their walk with God unless they learn to trust God. I need to trust God for who He is. I need to trust God for who I am. I need to trust God with my life situations. I need to learn to trust God in crisis. I need to trust God when I don’t need to trust Him. I need to trust God with my reputation. I need to trust God with my future. I need to trust God to take care of my enemies. I need to trust God with my finances. All this begins when I trust God for my salvation. Trusting God is the first key to thriving in our Christian walk. Do you trust God?
