    WINTER/SPRING 2014

THROUGH THE YEARS - ART LIVES ON!

    The Founders

  • 2 2013-2014 Season • www.OceanReefArtLeague.com

    PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEKaren Waite

Barely two months gone by in this year’s “Season” and the Art League has started off with a bang!

For those of you not able to be with us, the Art League opened in November with one of our best Showcase Exhibitions. With more instructors than ever before demonstrating their artistic techniques — whether it be at jewelry making, drawing, pottery, painting, basket weav-ing, woodworking, and even delving into the unknown abyss of the computer or iPhone — the meek at heart were encour-aged to push ahead and take a chance at bringing forth unearthed creativity by signing up for workshops never before entertained as a possibility.

In December, a home run was hit when Gary Monroe opened our Florida Highwaymen Exhibition by giving a lecture that was truly enjoyed by all that attended - enlightening us on the history and legend of the Highwaymen; putting the colorful exhibition into true perspective... artwork of an era gone by.

We have kicked off 2014 with the phenomenal landscape photography of Clyde Butcher. And soon, the ever popular New Works Show will take over our gallery, promising to be better than ever due to our new strategy of giving our artists more time to refine their works after arriving back to the tranquility of the Reef. And the shows just keep on coming, never ceasing to amaze us with the talents of those who surround us.

The shows are only one part of what has spilled forth since our doors opened in November — new classes and new workshops are up and running; the Book Club and Orchid Club are going strong; the Woodworking Studio is gaining more and more recognition; and sign-ups for our trip expeditions are quickly filling up now that we are in full swing.

So, glance at the following pages to see what you may have overlooked in our Fall Newsletter - noticing the new addi-tions to classes and workshops.

Take a leap into this New Year by tak-ing a chance at your creativity — you may be surprised.

    FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORSherri Harris

Doesn’t everyday at Ocean Reef feel like a Holiday?

I think so. So much so that we have something special scheduled almost everyday of the week for the rest of the young season.

After many years of bringing new and exciting programs to the Art League, our Board of Directors strive to add innova-tive and stimulating programs each and every season and they do so with dynam-ic enthusiasm.

The show goes on but the spotlight is really on our valued members who support our programs each and every season. We give heartfelt thanks to the Ocean Reef Community who participate in all of our unique offerings.

What can we do different or better? Do you have someone special that you would like us to invite either to teach or exhibit or lecture?

We plan many months in advance so drop by to speak to us when something or someone comes to mind. We love hear-ing from you.

PLEASE JOIN US AND JOIN THE FUN!

    FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CHAIRGeorge Lucas

For the Ocean Reef underprivileged who have not yet joined the Art League, there is still a chance to get aboard this First Class Space Ship. Nothing at the Art League is ordinary or boring, especially not the interesting members who you meet.

Imagination abounds around you. Its contagious. And if you do not consider yourself creative enough, don’t be so modest; when you’re with this group, magic rubs off. That’s how all the mem-bers felt before they grabbed the urge to

join and now they walk around our stu-dios on air.

Most of the courses are still to come in the new year. Maybe more impor-tant, there are many hours of free time to work together on new projects and learn from... and get to know... other new friends.

At your Art League there are infinite levels of skill... and some good compa-ny with the no-skill-yet-apparent. The clouds of imagination swirl around the shops and shows at all levels, and even swirl around those valued members who choose not to create, but who welcome lucky visitors to this special place.

We recommend that you pick up your pen, or the phone, or stop in, and join us for a modest annual dues that are quickly repaid with enjoyable time and often a sense of surprising accomplishment.

    EDITOR’S MESSAGEChris Fisher

On the cover of this issue is times past at the Art League. If you look closely you might find yourself there. It really tells the story of how diverse our offerings are and how much pleasure they given over the years.

Everyone seems to like our new for-mat. We are continuing to place color pic-tures on the front page and our messages from the board and director inside the cover. Next, you can delve into the meat of the newsletter, our classes, lectures, tours and all the fun offerings we are known for.

We hope that the listing of classes and opportunities to do all things related to art are clearly laid out so you can grab your calendar to plot your winter and spring activities.

LUNCHEON OF THE BOATING PARTY Co-Sponsored by KAY AND JERRY FISHERDr. Dorothy Kosinski, SpeakerMonday, February 3 4:00 pm

Join art historian, curator, author, and museum director, Dr. Dorothy Kosinski, in a discussion about one of the world’s most famous paintings – Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s 1880-81 Luncheon of the Boating Party. This radiant icon of Impressionism is rich in multiple layers of meaning and significance. Stylistically the painting represents the apogee of the artist’s career. The grand riverside scene offers a glimpse into the vitality of middle class nineteenth century France. The painting continues to inspire and inform – the object of curatorial study and cutting-edge technical analysis – a springboard for new knowledge and vital learning in the museum of the twenty first century.

THE PRIZEFIGHTER AND THE PLAYWRIGHT Co-Sponsored by SWENSON & ECUYER REALTYJay Tunney, SpeakerWednesday, February 20 4:00 pm

Ernest Hemingway and Gene Tunney had a symbiotic relationship. Hemingway, the writer, was always yearning, and searching, to be a man of action and not to just be a writer about it. Boxing, bullfighting and sports fishing were his subjects that he constantly talked about as well as references to literature.Gene Tunney, on the other hand, was a man of action who yearned and searched to be a man of literature, poetry and culture. Both men were perfectly suited for one another – they gave the other what the other lacked. Besides they were both champions in their own fields – a real draw. Please join us for an interesting twist into the lives of two very unique individuals.Book signing and wine and cheese reception immediately follows.

at 12:30 pm, returns by 7:30 p.m. Monty Python’s Spamalot is a musical comedy “lovingly ripped off from” the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Like the film, it is a highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian Legend, but it differs from the film in many ways.Stalwart Eric Idle and composer John Du Prez adapt the classic film Monty Python and the Holy Grail into a musical featuring the Knights Who Say Ni, killer rabbits, accused witches and other Python touches. Spamalot adds swipes at Vegas glitz and Broadway conventions to the film’s anarchic spirit. We will cap this wonderful day off with dinner at one of Coral Gables best restaurants.

WOODCHUCKS IN THE BASEMENTGeorge Lucas and Ned Ferrarone

Don't call the exterminator, join us! The news has been leaking out that the best-kept secret of all the many special places at Ocean Reef is the Meredith Woodshop on the first floor of the Art League. It is tucked in the corner, behind the johns, but now has a glass door for you to see the extraordinary setup of benches and high quality machine tools. You do not have to buy your own tools; save your garage for your golf carts, use our shop. The Art League shop has dust collection, bright light, and some very bright craftsmen to share your woodworking interest. This year, in addition to the visiting expert teachers listed in the schedule, a group of guys and girls who don't mind the smell of sawdust, and love the feel of well sanded wood, have another club-within-a-club calling ourselves the Woodchucks. We will meet on afternoons, at your own times when free, for freelance projects together to share old tricks, methods, and safety. Call Sherri to visit the shop and sign up to join us. At all levels of experience, everyone adds some good ideas and energy while taking away new skills and friendship.
