As an initiative from School of Public health, in UWP the project proposed by the department ‘Health Access on the Go’ was planned. It is a concept to develop a kiosk that would measure Weight,Height andcalculateBMI (bodymass index).Thiskioskwouldbe strategicallyplaced within campus near the lifts and in hostel’s entrance and students will be tempted to monitor their weight regularly and adopt behavior control overweight. The idea is to make our students more health conscious, avoid junk food and take up exercise as they

continuously monitor their weight. Dr. T. Jayanthi and Dr. Varshini Karthik are involved in this work.

Student technical Club- TekMedica

A student technical club ‘Tekmedica’ was formed to kindle students’ innovation and to carry out projects with self-motivation. After initial screening of several projects submitted by the students project entitled ‘Design of a smart bed messaging system for bedridden patients’ was selected. With funds allotted by the management four teams are working on the four aspects of the work namely sensor panel, alarm system, application development and bed design. As of now the design and components/software selection are completed.

• NewGen IEDC SRM SIIC (SRM Innovation and Incubation Center) has fundedthe project Non-invasive bilirubin sensor for continuous monitoring and automatic control of phototheraphy for infant Jaundice treatment. The project is supervised by Dr. Anglenie Kirubha and was funded 20,000 INR

Thermal imaging method in the evaluation of obesity in various body regions – A preliminary study

Overweight and obesity has a powerful impact in various aspects of health. It is essential to be considered as one of the serious community health priority as there are many complications

related to obesity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mean skin surface temperature of different regions such as abdominal, shank, gluteal (thigh), forearm, neck, finger bedregion and to study the potential of feature extracted from thermograph of various regionand its measured skin temperature values in the evaluation of obesity.

In this preliminary study, thermal imaging of abdominal, shank, gluteal, forearm, neck and finger bed regionswas acquired and average skin temperaturewas estimated in variousregions for obese and normal subjects. Among the six region studied, neck region shows the greater temperature variation between the study population. In total population studied, the feature extracted parameter depicted positive association with mean skin surface temperature in various regions.

Medical 3D Printing has a variety of uses in dentistry, oral surgery and dental lab works. Designingofapatient-specificmandibleimplantforcancerandfracturecasesisbasedonthepatient’s medical imaging data and 3D printing. This study procedure uses the patient’s CT imagedatainDICOMformat(Digitalimagingandcommunicationmedicine).Thepatient’scorrupted mandible is extracted from the skull CT scan.

Mandibular fractures are due to accidents and sports fall. The cancerous and fracture mandible can be replaced with the advanced technology by3Dprintedpatientspecificmandibularimplantusingfuseddepositionmodelling.

Smart Helmet Arduino Kindled Optimization –SHAKO

The life of a trained combat pilot is too precious to be lost because of encountering serious medical conditionsdue toflying stress, combat actionor inability to eject timelydue toexceeding ‘G’ tolerance limits. This Smart Helmet is an attempt to combine the aerospace medicine to ascertain the critical threshold of physiological parameters which can impede catastrophically, the split-second decision-making ability of a combat pilot to eject safely and can actuate the ejection seat automatically as a lifesaving measure. The helmet has been synchronized using various sensors like Eye Tracking sensor, Pulse and ECG sensor, Spo2sensorandSweatandStresssensorwhichareplacedatspecificlocationstocollectphysiologicaldataofthepilotalongwithflyingparameters.Incase,thepilotisunconsciousdue to experiencing heavy ‘G’ loads or being incapacitated due to enemy action, the sensors activate the ejection system at the decision making altitude. A working model was tested and simulatedbyusingflyingsimulatorsoftware,buzzersandalarmtoindicateactualejection.Theflyingparametershavebeencalculatedmathematicallybyinterpolatingspatialforcesformulaetoascertainnearrealflyingconditionsderivedfromflyingsimulator.

Training a combat pilot entails huge expenditure of Government revenue and even more precious human hours. This innovation can be successfully used to reduce accidental death of combat pilots who are unable to eject themselves at crucial decision-making juncture. By installing this self-ejecting system, the pilot is ejected automatically by sensing and evaluating critical health parameters.

Workshop on Recent Trends in Medical Image processing and Analysis, 22nd and 23rd August 2019.

The workshop provided a forum for interaction between various multi-disciplinary domains of biomedical image processing. The workshop provided insight knowledge about the fundamentals of medical image processing, recent trends, and other aspects relevant to the context. The main focus of the workshop was to emphasize various image processing techniques for biomedical applications. The workshop was planned with a series of lectures followed by hands on training on implementation of image segmentation algorithms, applicationofdeeplearninginmedicalimagestoclassifyeachpixelintoaspecificclass,followedbytrainingConvolutionalNeuralNetworks(CNNs).

Faculty Development Programme on “Medical Device Product Development and IPR”, 7th & 8th February 2020

This FDP was based on medical device and product development and intellectual property rights. It not only focused on the development of medical devices but also on the intellectual property rights, their types, their importance, policies and procedures including patent searching, trademarks, copyrights etc. Several personals from all related disciplines were invitedtodeliverthelecturesincludingscientificofficers,patentagents,lawyersandthelike. The FDP had a total of 44 participants, which included external participants and from the host institution.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, 2020, Department of Biomedical Engineering, wanted to wish wellness to women. We believe that promoting wellness is crucial and as important as curing illness.

With this vision, we welcomed women faculty across the university to have simple wellness tests done for Osteoporosis, Diabetic foot, Body composition parameters, Rheumatoid Arthritis andVaricoseveins.These testswereoffered freeof cost.Researchequipmentswereusedforasocietalconnectandbenefit.

An Alumni webinar series was conducted from 11th to 16th May 2020. These sessions, which initially were intended as webinar series for our department students alone was later opened for all the Biomedical Engineering fraternity. There were 289 registrations for the event, constituting 47 academicians. 193 students and 49 members who were from industry, alumnigroupandfamilymembers.Totally62differentinstitutionswerepartofthisseries.Every session had a turnout of minimum 75 participants. Apart from the participants in the session, the sessions were also live streamed to enable people with link to view it. All the sessions we conducted on Google Meet.
