EXSEED Client Integration Testing Version 1.0 Connecting to SMS with Thunderbird  This document will help you connect Mozilla’s Thunderbird for Windows on a computer that is not on Edinburgh University’s Network to the University’s SMS. This documentation is based on Mozilla Thunderbird version 3.1.9. This document is intended for users of the University’s SMS service only. You will need to have Mozilla Thunderbird installed on your machine. In order to complete this task, you will need to know your EASE Username and Password. For any problems or questions, please contact [email protected] or phone (6) 515151. Configuring Mozilla Thunderbird to connect to SMS 1. Go to the Windows Start Menu and open Mozilla Thunderbird. 2. If you have not run Thunderbird before, the wizard may run automatically. If it does not, click Create a new account 3. The Mail Account Setup window appears. Type the name you wish people to see when you send them mail in the Your Name box. For E-mail address type in your University email address: [email protected] Click Continue. Connecting to SMS with Thunderbird This document will help you connect Mozilla’s Thunderbird for Windows on a computer that is not

on Edinburgh University’s Network to the University’s SMS. This documentation is based on Mozilla

Thunderbird version 3.1.9.

This document is intended for users of the University’s SMS service only. You will need to have

Mozilla Thunderbird installed on your machine.

Configuring Mozilla Thunderbird to connect to SMS

1.  Go to the Windows Start Menu and open

Mozilla Thunderbird.

2.  If you have not run Thunderbird before, the

wizard may run automatically. If it does not,

click Create a new account

3.  The Mail Account Setup window appears.

Type the name you wish people to see when

you send them mail in the Your Name box.

For E-mail address type in your University

email address:

[email protected]

Click Continue.

Obtaining Mozilla Thunderbird

4.  Thunderbird will attempt to auto-discover

your settings, but they will not be correct.

Click on Manual Setup.

5.  Ensure that Server Settings is highlighted in

the left pane.

Type imap.staffmail.ed.ac.uk into the server

name box.

Type 993 into the port box.

Type your username into the User Name box.

Change the Connection security drop-down

list to SSL/TLS.

Change the Authentication method drop-

down list to Normal password.

6.  Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the left

pane.

7.  Highlight the default entry - here called

smtp.sms.ed.ac.uk (default). 

Click Edit.

You can now start using Thunderbird.

Unless otherwise explicitly stated, all content is copyright © University of Edinburgh 2011. 

8.  Type a suitable description into the

Description box.

Type smtp.sms.ed.ac.uk into the Server

Name box.

Ensure that the Port box contains 465.

Ensure that Connection Security is set to

SSL/TLS.

Change Authentication method to Normal

password.

Enter your University Username into the

User Name box.

Click OK.

9.  Click OK again.

10. You may receive a message asking to make

Thunderbird your default client for a number

of services.

Select according to your preference, then

click OK.
