Its purpose is to enhance, extend, strengthen and perpetuate the Josephite charism in our schools. Charism might be defined as a parcular philosophy or way of doing things, and is usually associated with spirituality and religious organisaons. When Mary MacKillop and Fr Julian Tenison Woods began the Sisters of St Joseph in 1867 in Penola, they did not set out to start a charism; they set out to live the Gospel in providing educaon for those in need based on principles of equality and inclusion. In so doing, they laid a foundaon for living, learning and leading that connues to inspire the Principals and communies of over 400 schools in Australia that connue a Josephite tradion of educang in faith, hope and jusce. One of the comments that struck me today was they will know who we are by how we live and lead’. Mary MacKillop had great courage in her me to challenge the status quo and she always sought what was best for children. Mary was never complacent in accepng that things were good enough; she had high expectaons of herself and others and she led boldly. I have been deeply inspired by Marys legacy and the mission we have of finding new, contemporary ways of keeping the Josephite flame burning brightly in a modern and ever changing context. In all areas of learning, we seek to do, and to teach students to do, what is ethically and morally the right thing. This takes courage, compassion and empathy. As a Josephite school, we share a wonderful mission and a great responsibility but I know we are up for the challenge! As I write my newsletter article this week, I am in Adelaide attending the annual conference of the Association of Josephite Affiliated Secondary Schools. The Association was formed in 2006. Its purpose is to enhance, extend, strengthen and perpetuate the Josephite charism in our schools. Charism might be defined as a particular philosophy or way of doing things, and is usually associated with spirituality and religious organisations. When Mary MacKillop and Fr Julian Tenison Woods began the Sisters of St Joseph in 1867 in Penola, they did not set out to start a charism; they set out to live the Gospel in providing education for those in need based on principles of equality and inclusion. In so doing, they laid a foundation for living, learning and leading that continues to inspire the Principals and communities of over 400 schools in Australia that continue a Josephite tradition of educating in faith, hope and justice. One of the comments that struck me today was ‘they will know who we are by how we live and lead’. Mary MacKillop had great courage in her time to challenge the status quo and she always sought what was best for children. Mary was never complacent in accepting that things were good enough; she had high expectations of herself and others and she led boldly. The presence of Bishop Greg O’Kelly sj, priests of the Diocese and several Sisters of St Joseph added to the occasion. Footsteps Dance Program During Week 8: Footsteps Dance Company will be visiting St Joseph's school next week and running their bi-annual program with students from Reception - Year 6. Footsteps Dance specialise in curriculum integrated school dance programs. Their programs use dance as a vehicle to develop students’ inter/intra personal skills, fitness levels and provide teachers with classroom resources that use dance as a starting point to help teachers educate across other curriculum areas. Little Saints Playgroup - Explore and Imagine

Our playgroup has been very busy this term with lots of learning and laughter taking place. A warm welcome to our new families, it has been lovely getting to know you all. Yesterday I was fortunate enough to

attend a conference in Adelaide with a focus on reading to children in their early years. Immersing children in language rich environments, such as our playgroup is a wonderful way to begin the reading process, particularly when we share books together. In addition to story time at playgroup we have a story table and craft activities relating to a particular book to encourage participation and creativity. To keep with our theme 'Explore and Imagine' we are looking for some donations of natural/real life type objects (not plastic ideally). Some examples that would be really useful include: Teacups and saucers, wooden bowls, cane/woven baskets, old suitcases, egg beaters and pine cones. Your support is greatly appreciated. Our playgroup runs every Monday during term time from 9:00-10:30am in the GP Room with all 0-5 year olds most welcome. |Lauren Goodwin

9-a-side Football Yesterday Year 8/9 St Joseph’s students competed in the annual ‘Norwood Redlegs 9-a-side Football Carnival’ with teams attending from Port Lincoln High School, Navigators College, Tumby Bay Area School and Cummins Area School. The carnival was very popular amongst St Joseph’s students with 7 teams competing, the most of any school. Our teams were coached by Mr Aldridge (Year 8 boys), Mr Edwards and Darnell Richards (Year 9 boys Team 1 and 2) and Miss Dyer, Miss Morgan and Mr Keatley (Four Year 8/9 girls teams). All students thoroughly enjoyed the day, even in the cold and windy conditions. All of the boy’s teams displayed a high level of play with the Year 9 boys Team 2 winning Division B. It was great to see the girls enjoying the chance to tackle and slide on the ground to get the ball. Three of the girl’s teams came runners ups in Div A, B and C, with Div A only losing the grand final match by 1 point. Many students impressed the Norwood AFLW representatives with their skill level. |Matt Keatley

Well Done Missi Missi White attended SA Gymnastics State Championships last month and was placed 4th on the beam and 6th on the floor in the State for Level 7 Under 14s.

Congratulations Mary Last week the State SAPSASA Cross Country Championships were held at Oakbank in Adelaide. Students representing regions from across the state competed on the challenging cross country course. Congratulations to Mary Chapman who competed in the LEP Team. Mary competed in the 12 year old girls race, where she finished 47 out of 144 competitors.

Long Weekend Activities We would like to congratulate all staff and students who competed in the huge variety of activities and events over the long weekend. We are sure you did yourself and your teams proud.
