PRINCIPALS BLOG Dear Parents and Friends, Book Week We are having a fabulous and exciting week for Book Week! On Monday morning, all the students participated in Exciting Writing, a whole school writing activity. The students commenced in the multi, and together with a few props, which on this occasion included a huge treasure chest, a chain rope… (and lo and behold…Cheryl was hidden in the chest), and the start to a story. Their task was to write a stimulating and enthralling continuation to the story in a given time period. When the time had expired, the students all came together in the multi and students were selected from each grade to continue the story. It was fascinating to hear all the variations and different twists and turns the story took as interpreted by each author! I am sure that there were many more fantastic examples…we could have spent all day listening! Well done to each one of you for participating so enthusiastically. Just another example of how we celebrate writing. On Wednesday, all the students had a fabulous afternoon visiting a classroom of their choice to listen to a story and do some buddy reading. Then on Thursday, we are all looking forward to the author visit of Cameron Semmens, a poet. He will be working on the craft of poetry with groups of students, using some of his own wonderful examples. Finally on Friday, we will be having a Book Parade in the multi, in place of our normal assembly. The parade will commence at 9am. I am told that everyone embraces dressing up as their favourite book character and the parade will be quite impressive. I know the staff have been talking about their ideas for their own dress up for weeks now! Mmm…I wonder who or what I’ll be! I look forward to seeing your imaginative and creative ideas. Hoop-Time The final Hoop-Time day will be held next Tuesday when the Grade 5/6’s will be participating in the tournament at Dandenong. I wish the teams lots of luck. Most of all I hope that they have a fantastic and enjoyable day. Don’t forget our Ferny Creek values and great sportsmanship attitude for which we are known for! . Somers Camp I checked in again with Somers Camp to see how our happy campers were travelling. Despite the inclement and variable weather conditions, they were having a fun time. They have all enjoyed visits from their families on Sunday. We are looking forward to welcoming them back later this week and hearing about all of their adventures!

Pick My Project Please don’t forget to vote for our entry in the Pick My Project campaign. For the project to have any chance of being successfully selected to receive the $181,000 grant, we must have as many votes as possible. So place it on your Facebook page and social media and encourage any adult that you know to register and vote!

‘Community Inclusive Environmental Learn and Play Space’

Carpark Entry Just a reminder to all families and students to please refrain from entering the school via the staff carpark. This is usually a busy area with staff cars constantly coming and going and can be quite a dangerous area for pedestrians. We ask that, for you and your child’s safety, please use the footpath. Many thanks for your understanding.

Transition This week we had the second of our Transition to School days. Once again, we welcomed many excited (and a little apprehensive) children to join in with our Transition program. They had a wonderful time in the Foundation classroom enjoying fun activities. If you know of someone who may be interested in enrolling their child into the school for Foundation next year, or if you have not yet completed the enrolment process for your child, please don’t hesitate to contact either myself or the office for further information or a school tour.

Father’s Day Assembly Next Friday will also be a special Father’s Day Assembly when we will have the opportunity to celebrate all the special dads that we have in our community. We will commence the morning with an assembly at 9.00am with a dedication to all the fathers, followed by the drawing of the ‘Google Home Raffle’. We will then progress to the oval to watch parents and the dads of the Grade 6 students (and staff I believe) play a game of footy versus the Grade 6 students. I understand that this is becoming something of a tradition. I look forward to watching (?) the game. This will be followed, after recess, with the ‘Footy Roadshow’ skills clinic and a Footy Day lunch with pies and sausage rolls. Information has already gone home this week regarding this event and with a payment form. The lunch may be ordered at a cost of $5. The cost of the ‘Footy Roadshow’ skills clinic is an additional $5. The forms need to be returned, together with the monies, by Tuesday 28th August.

Our School

Needs Your

Help We are fortunate at Ferny Creek PS to have such a beautiful environment for our precious children to thrive in. Our school grounds are something we can be proud of but requires a great deal of maintenance to keep them in tip top shape. Government funding doesn’t cover all of these requirements.

BYO brooms/shovels etc

We look forward to seeing you there! Building and Grounds Committee.

and teachers of how people are using technology, the challenges they may face online, and how to help them overcome these in a safe and ethical way.

ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia, Datacom and the Commonwealth Bank. The program is delivered in collaboration with policing partners New South Wales Police Force, Northern Territory Police, Queensland Police, South Australia Police, Tasmania Police, Western Australia Police, as well as Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.

The presentation will be delivered by a local law enforcement member and an industry volunteer. The presentation covers issues relating to children and young peoples’ privacy and security online, their relationships with other users and their online reputation. It provides insight into the devices young people are using, as well as the popular websites, apps and social networking sites they’re accessing.

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology.

Have a great week everyone! Anni

Twilight FUN Festival 2018

Preparations are well under way (keep an eye out in your child’s diary/Tiqbiz for a notice from

your grade’s Festival Rep) and now we need YOU!!

We have 8 stalls this year, which are:

Wine Bags (FR) – Rachel Jacobson

Lucky Boxes (FR) – Rachel Jacobson

‘Handmade in the Hills’ stall (1/2L) – Margie Moore (& 1/2 Team)

Slushie stall (1/2 Combined) – Karra McLeod & Michelle Spencer

Lolly Stall (1/2 combined) – Karra McLeod & Michelle Spencer

Pocket Money stall (3/4JK) – Yvette Scott

Chocolate Toss (3/4S) – Fleur Green

Plants (Gen Lim & Robyn Taylor)

(Due to the fact that we have fewer grades than we did in 2016, you can see that our Junior grades

have taken on additional stalls and we have two parents running the Plants Stall without the support of a

grade – we would therefore appreciate as much support from other areas of the school and community

as we can, please!..)

Some of our stalls need their grade’s support whilst others need help from the whole school. If anyone

can help with any of these things, please let your Festival Rep know, Jill or Dana at the Office or

contact myself directly - [email protected]

We need:

Wine (or any bottles of alcohol you may have lurking in the back of your pantry that you know you

won’t drink!) We ask that value be a minimum of $10 per bottle, please as we sell these mystery

wine bags for $10 each,

Contacts anyone has for Wineries or bottle shops that may be able to donate wine to Wine Bag

stall.

Contacts anyone has for Nurseries who may be willing to donate plants to the Plant Stall.

Handmade items (anything!) for the Handmade stalls.

Raffle hamper items – your Festival Rep will let you know which colour items your grade is

collecting. There will also be hamper in the 5/6 area but you can donate any colour items and we

will find its’ rightful ‘home.’

Books for our Book Sale – please keep these at home until closer to the time.

We are looking for a parent or group of parents to join our Festival Committee to coordinate the

JUMBLE SALE, BOOK SALE, BEER TENT and the many FOOD stalls. If you can help at all,

please contact the Office ASAP or Rhian Jessop.

Together, let’s make this a GREAT 2018 FUN Festival!
