FEAST OF ANNUNCIATION .....THIS FRIDAY on GOOD FRIDAY! The feast of the Annunciation of the Lord celebrates the angel Gabriel's appearance to the Virgin Mary (Luke 1:26-38), his announcement that the Blessed Virgin had been chosen to be the Mother of Our Lord, and Mary's fiat—her willing acceptance of God's holy plan. Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

Straight after our Easter break Year 12 students commence their HSC mid course exams. The students have been well prepared by their teachers and I ask that you keep them in your prayers over the last two weeks. Students are reminded to check their exam timetables, be at school about 30 minutes before each exam and to call the college if they are unwell and get a doctor’s certificate if they cannot sit an exam.

Term 2 Commences—Thursday April 28

The Catholic Schools Office Wagga Wagga has called all staff from every diocesan school to attend Professional Learning and Development in Wagga Wagga for the first two days of Term 2. Hence, Tuesday April 26 and Wednesday 27 will be extra holidays for all students!

The conference, Nourish2Thrive will focus on Health and Wellbeing of staff working in Catholic Education. Emphasis will be on body, mind, soul and spirit through liturgy, prayer, meditation, keynote speakers, art, music, exercise and indigenous On-Country experiences. Director of Catholic Education, Mr Alan Bowyer states, “We recognize both the blessings and challenges of being called to work in Catholic Education, of taking up the Cross each day. We need to be in the best space we can be in order to rise to the physical, intellectual and spiritual demands that are made on us everyday. Effective academic care of students relies heavily on staff to maintain their own wellbeing and to restore themselves regularly. This conference is an opportunity to explore new ways of doing this and then take these back to the workplace so that we and our students in our care may thrive and have abundant life.”

Today our students represented their Colour Houses-Brendan, Patrick, McCauley and Marcellin at our annual Athletics Carnival. I congratulate everyone for their participation and College spirit and thank Sports Coordinator , Mr John Seers and staff for organizing a successful day. It was so great to see so many parents attend the Carnival this year.

Once again, I wish you a Happy and Holy Easter. Travel safely if you are visiting family and friends.

PRELIMINARY SUPPORT EVENING

Last night Year 11 students and parents attended

their first of many Preliminary Support Evenings.

These evenings are important for both preparing

students for the demands of Stage 6 schooling, as well

as providing an opportunity for parents to

understand and support their child through this

process. The topics discussed included having a

‘Growth Mindset’, ‘Note taking versus Note Making’

and the importance of good writing in senior schooling.

Thank you to Mr Heath Neville and Mrs Lora Segrave for

their organisation on the night. It was a great success.

HSC MID COURSE EXAMINATIONS

Year 12 students commence their HSC Mid Course

examinations next week. This examination period is a

great opportunity for students to assess where they are at with their learning. The feedback they receive

will help them to know how they can improve their exam responses and will provide students with

guidance on how to improve for next time. We advise all students to see this as a vital learning experience

to set themselves up for future success. Students should refer to the study tips and strategies over the page

titled ‘Demystifying Stage 6 Exams’ as well as practice past paper questions in preparation for these exams.

Parents can support their children by ensuring that the home environment is conducive to study over this

period. Students may need some leniency around household chores as well as some peace, quiet and space

to allow them to prepare. The examination timetable is included in this newsletter. Students need to arrive

at school 30 minutes prior to exams which allows them time to settle and mentally prepare. If your child is

sick or an unexpected event prevents them from attending, please contact the College office on 69692400,

the morning of the exam by 9am. Failure to do so will result in a zero result.

We have engaged external examination supervisors for this exam period and we hope that this will help

familiarise our students with the processes and procedures that will take place for their HSC exams at the

end of this year.

PRAYERS PLEASE

We keep in our prayers the families of Stephen Munro on the passing of his mother and Mary Bergmeier whose grandmother passed away, Daniel, Nathan and Andrew Febo on the loss of their Granfather. Mrs Comarin Grandmother of Anastasia Comarin and Mr Bortolin Grandfather of Nathan and Melissa Bortolin.

We also pray for any families in our community who have lost loved ones or are suffering illnesses.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

The greatest event in the history of humanity is the moment God (the Son of God, Jesus) took flesh and became one of us and lived among us, shared our life, our joys, pains, difficulties and challenges. To prove to us how much he loves us he freely accepted the cross and died for us so that we might be saved and enter into eternal life with Him in heaven at the end.

Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday is a huge foundation of our faith and that’s why the Easter celebration is always unique, exciting and joyful.

Let us spend time with Jesus in this holiest of the weeks in our lives as Christians beginning with the Palm Sunday this weekend and on to its culmination with the Mass of the Lord’s supper on Holy Thursday, the Passion and death of Jesus on Good Friday, Holy Saturday Vigil Mass and the Easter Sunday celebration. As we immerse ourselves in these holy events of our redemption, may Jesus renew us and strengthen us with the power of his resurrection, Amen.

Diocesan Open Soccer Gala Day

On Thursday 17th March, Marian hosted the

Diocesan Soccer Gala Day at Yoogali oval. This was a competition between the five Wagga Wagga Diocesan Colleges of; Marian CC, St Francis CC, Kildara CC, Matre Dei CC and Xavier CC.

The day was designed to decide the Riverina Champion College for the Open Boys and Girls for the CCC knockout competition as well as select the Wagga Wagga Diocesan Team to compete at Combined Catholic Colleges in Sydney at Valentine Park on the 16

th

and 17th May.

Marian competed extremely strongly with both the Open Boys and Open Girls teams winning 3 games and drawing 1 game in their preliminary 4 games. This resulted in both the Marian sides making the final against Xavier Catholic College Albury.

In the final, Marian’s Open Boys won their game 2 nil and the Open Girls won their game 1 nil. Both teams competed throughout the day without conceding a goal.

The selectors were very impressed with the standard of the games and the spirit in which they were played. Marian featured strongly in the selections with 8 of the 11 positions in the CCC side going to the Open Boys team and 7 of the 11 positions going to the Open Girls Team. In addition Marian also enjoyed a further 4 positions for the Boys and Girls being chosen as shadow players.

I would like to conclude with a big thank you to Mark Feltracco for taking the time off work to officiate and Rocky

Marando for taking time off work to select the Open Boys Side and offer to be the Diocesan Coach over the 2 day

carnival. The day was a success due to the assistance of these two people.

On Tuesday MCC played St Francis in the first round of the NSW Junior Chess League competition.

MCC Started with a strong start winning on boards 3 and 4 but unfortunately lost on board 1, this meant the match went down to the last game on board 2 which we eventually won.

This is a great start to the competition as we only have one member left of last year’s regional winning team.

Claire Murray participated in the NSW Schoolgirls Cricket Championships in Campbelltown from 14th-16th March as part of the CCC team. Unfortunately the CCC team did not win a game, with rain delays, reduced over games and luck not on their side. They improved as a team each time they played, with the Final, playing off for 3rd and 4th against CIS being their highest scoring game. Claire finished with bowling figures of 9 overs, 1 maiden, 3/53 with her best figures 2/9. Claire enjoyed the experience and having played at this level against girls who played in the WBBL this year, will definitely try out again next year.

Fafita Cup Marian will take part in the annual Fafita Cup at E W Moore Oval over the next two weeks. Marian will take on Wade High on Thursday the 31

st

of March followed by Griffith High on the 7

th of April. The Opens League

Tag team will kick off at 5pm followed by Under 16’s Rugby League and Opens Rugby League.

It would be great to see many

students and families down there to

support our teams against some

tough opposition.

Year 8 Forensic Science Workshop

This week the Year 8 students participated in a Forensic Science Workshop put on by a company from Sydney called 'Education Interactive' Students had hands on experience in investigating a murder crime scene. They were presented with the scenario along with the forensic evidence. The students were required to analyse the evidence and formulate a theory that would explain who the murderer was and indicate which pieces of evidence proved their theory. The students were very engaged and enjoyed being a Forensic Scientist for the day. They gained a better understanding of the investigation process and many were very inquisitive in finding out about how to become an expert in the field of Forensic Science.

Last week was a busy week for Year 12. On Thursday, we welcomed University of

Wollongong to the school for a presentation about admission to the university. The

presentation was very insightful and informed us regarding early entry and pathways

into the university. With our study in full swing for the HSC mid-course exams in week 10

and 11, Harmony day on Friday was a good break from these stressful times. The sea of

orange bandanas wore by all students during the assembly demonstrated the pride in

which all students took in celebrating the day. With 34 nations being represented in the

flag waving ceremony, multiculturalism within MCC was certainly on display. Harmony

Day was an overall success with performances, food stalls and activities representing a

wide range of cultures. The day really gave a true

reflection on the diversity which exists within the

Marian Catholic College community.

Year 12 Leadership Team

WHAT A HUGE WEEK WE HAVE HAD!!!!!! This week THE COMMUNITY ACTION TEAM

continued their involvement with the local community HARMONY

DAY celebrations and assisted in creating a visual art display as part of the

“HARMONY TRAIL”. Several classes had been involved in cutting out

“paper people” which formed the

basis of the display which can be

viewed in front of Griffith City

Library. The “HARMONY TRAIL”

commenced with breakfast at the

Griffith City Library and invited the

public to follow a trail of

informative facts & information regarding Griffith’s

multicultural community through the main street; making

their way to Ningana where the public were invited to join

in a multi-cultural lunch. The final event for the day was the

show casing of the doco~film “HE NAMED ME MALALA”.

Thank you to all who joined us at the premiere night; it was

an extremely successful evening. The funds raised on the

night provided the opportunity for 400 local high school

students to attend matinees the following day. The movie

itself is brilliant and gave us an insight to what it is like to

be a refuge within your own country and under the rule of a

group who support a fundamentalist ideology and are

prepared to eradicate anyone who opposes their beliefs.

Malala is a truly inspirational young women and the work

that she initiates and supports through her organisation

MALALA FUND restores your faith in humanity

The message that many of the students took home from the movie was that we are truly blessed to

be living in Australia and they are grateful for the opportunities that come with that privilege,

access to education, the freedom to celebrate your beliefs and cultural identity and the knowledge

that when you go to sleep of a night you are not under the threat of war or physical violence

Malala finished of a fantastic week of celebrations, a week where we acknowledged our differences

and promoted multiculturalism through art, music, dance and food. A variety of activities that

provided the opportunity for us to feel like we all belong, are valued and therefore are more united

as a community signifying at Marian Catholic College “our diversity is our strength”.
